Bathfitters??

I was at a home show over the weekend and got to see their display. I am closing on a home in a month and the bathrooms are fine but ugly. The house is over 80 years old.

This might be just what I need and I made an appointment for them to come out in May after I am in the house.

I will get three estimates. Bath Fitters isn't the only company that does this. All you have to do it google it. I am going to bet that Bath Fitters is the highest of the 3 estimates I am going to get. IMHO the slicker the sales pitch the more it is going to cost.

I learned from the replacement windows, check around.

Interesting - I don't know where you guys live that you got a bathroom gutted and totally re-done for $3,000 - not around here that I know of. I live in a condo in NJ. It's a converted garden apart - it's 55 years old. Our neighbor had her bathroom totally re-done - new everything - floor, walls, tub, plumbing, window - everything - it cost here around $10,000 and her bathroom was out of commission for a couple of weeks - after they did the first whatever they hooked up her toilet but that was it. Luckilly for her her Mom lives 5 min. away so she showered there. We can't see spending $10,000 so we're interested in ReBath or Bathfitters. I would think that if the mold and mildew is all cleaned and the walls are dry before they cover it - that shouldn't be an issue - it only grows when it's damp so . . .

If you're concerned about an ugly fiberglass tub, they sell a "paint" at Walmart and home stores so you can paint it a color you prefer. I think it was $20ish per set, and one set does the tub or the walls-so $40 for tub and shower surround. If it's just ugliness you're thinking of, it might be the way to go. If it comes out horrible, you can still replace it or cover it. I've looked into it for our lovely avocado tub/shower. The darn thing is 30+ years old and in great shape, so we can't justify replacing it. It's amazing what a pretty shower curtain will camouflage, though! :)

We bought one from Home Depot and had a local handyman install it. It cost us $1,100 (and a pizza) for everything. The unit was around $300 and the labor was $800.

Dh saw a huge sell on jacuzzi tubs at Home Depot. He bought it with the Home Depot card (and saved more there)-- and he and a buddy ripped out the wall in our garage that leads to the bathroom-- then took the tub out.

We had about 3-4 weeks of cold wintry nights with no wall-- but black tarp over it and we kept the bathroom door shut tightly with towels around the holes.

This would have taken much less than 1 week had we really had the time to do it all at once.

We hired a guy to put in the tile on the floor and 'set' the tub, ... to make it even. The tile guy also built out a wall to make the tubs appearance look better. We then hired an electrician to plumb it in (less than $200).... once the jacuzzi was plumbed in with the shower head and all we put the studs back up in the walls and had the tile guys come back and tile all around it.

The entire thing (Tub, tile, work, etc) cost us about $2,200.... the before and after is amazing. We went from one of those plastic looking "trailer tubs" that they put in a lot of spec homes (goes to the ceiling and all around the walls) with laminate flooring.... to a jacuzzi jet tub with beautiful tile and grout.

Although Ill admit that it was probably much easier for us to completely take out our old tub because we could just take it out by taking the studs and sheet rock out of the garage-- this wouldn't be as easy if the bathroom were on the side of the house and you had to remove siding, etc. I would say with a porcelain tub it can be very difficult.

If you have easy access like I did I would recommend contracting people out on your own and doing it this way.

Magimus- that is really pretty- looks like spa!

Thank you very much-- it was pretty inexpensive when I compare it to what some are having to do just to 'cover' their tub. I just wanted everyone to see that if you become your own contractor you can get just as great of results (if not far better) and save money too!!

Bath fitters quoted me $4500 but $3800 if we signed the same day:rotfl2: . We got the whole thing remodeled for $3500 and they had it done in 48 hours since it is our only bath.

we just had bathfitters do one of our bathrooms..this was just for a stand up shower....it was around 3,000.00 but they completely gutted the shower and replaced the greenboard, replaced the flooring (which was a bit crickety before). they use acrylic which is alot more durable than fiberglass. and its gauranteed for life as long as your the original owners of the house ;) we absoulutely love it! easy to clean too. i think it was well worth every penny and its done in day!!!!!
