Hi all!

I just wanted to let you know about an experience we have had with the bath bombs from Basin. I have sent them a letter, I wanted to share some if it with you as a precaution. I have been appalled at Basins lack of caring about this entire thing. I thought this was maybe a one time thing but it happened to my niece over vacation too.

Here is a partial copy of my letter:

Dear Basin,

On May 6th at approximately 6:00 PM, I placed my four year old daughter into a bath. It was special as her brother was already sleeping so she could have the tub to herself. She knew that this meant she could use one of her special mickey bath bombs. After putting it in the tub, the bomb fizzled much quicker than usual, and had a much stronger scent. My daughter and I were playing with the mickeys that floated to the top. Suddenly, she began to scream that her <private part> was hurting and immediately stood up. I rinsed it off, she sat back down and in about 10 seconds began to scream again, this time, much louder. I immediately rinsed her private area off and removed her from the tub. It was only then that I noticed she was completely covered in red, raised blotches, including her face. She continued to scream until I rinsed and rubbed her body. I then placed some cream on her to which she was still yelling. I then called the basin store in Downtown Disney. When I spoke with “Justin” on the phone, he informed me that they knew about this and that the chemist had mixed a "bad" batch. He said he thought they had got them all off the shelves but clearly they missed some. He also said it had happened to him. The gentleman on the phone was lovely, and offered me a "refund" the next time I was in. My daughter went to the doctor 4 days later.
About three weeks later, we were at Disney, celebrating my 40 th birthday. We stopped into the Basin store and asked who we should speak to about this further. I was given the name “Susan” and a number at the store in the Mall of America. After six phone calls, Susan finally returned my call on June 30th. She informed me that the chemist mixed candle scent into the bombs and the store thought they had taken most of the off the shelves but they knew they missed some. My question to Basin is WHY NOT TELL SOMEONE? Why not use the internet to recall them Why not post it on a Disney site? WHY LET MY CHILD SUFFER?? I am do disappointed in Basin and what they have known done to my family. My daughter used to look forward to these times together and the special treat we could bring back from Disney. I have asked her if she wanted to try it again but she is terrified it will happen again and I can honestly tell you that I will NEVER forget the sound of her screaming. As a parent, it is the very last thing you want to ever hear.

Very sorry to hear this happened and really hope your daughter and niece are OK.

I'm so so so so sorry to hear about this. This is really just plain negligent of them, to keep selling them, when they KNEW that there was a possibility that some of the ones being sold were bad ones.

This is just so so so irresponsible on their part for not recalling ALL of the bath bombs.

Have you thought about talking to a lawyer?

Yeah we have thought about it, especially since they were so laissez faire about the entire thing!
I am just stunned at how they did not bother to tell anyone else, put out a recall, etc.

Just be careful out there!

Wow, why on earth would they have mixed candle oils into their bath products?! Candle fragrances aren't meant to be used on the skin.

Bath time should be fun for your daughter. I'm sorry your daughter had such a terrible experience :( If you have the time, a fun project would be to make DIY bath salts or fizzies with her. That way, you know exactly what's going into the product and put her in the mindset that taking baths = not scary.

Or another option is to try Lush bath bombs. I used to work there and they are quality handmade products. They are more expensive than Basin but 1. the company lists all the ingredients in quantitative order, which I notice Basin does not; 2. they use essential oils and natural ingredients in the bath bombs. They have a location in Orlando Airport. There is a store on Newbury St, and Natick Mall.

I hope your daughter is feeling better soon.

I am so sorry to hear that. That's one reason I don't do candles. Too much to do to keep track of that stuff, and I don't need another hobby.

Basin is a distributor for another company's products. It is their responsibility to work with their supplier to pull products they know have bad quality analysis.

FYI - Many places that produce bath products, such as glycerin soaps, produce candles. It's a very easy transition to do the two businesses simultaneously. It is highly unfortunate that someone made such a grevious error. It is rare in the bath industry and they should have been more careful with their batch.

I have seen a Lush department in one of our local Macy's. I actually haven't been in to look at the products, I have just seen them through the window. Maybe I will stop in and get a bath bomb. I don't take baths that much. I am a shower girl usually.

How big are the bath tubs on the Wonder? I might have a good soak on the cruise.

She loves the fizz but it was more the floating mickey's that she REALLY liked too.

I am disappointed for her but I was more concerned about how scared she was to take a tub. We spent some time with her just taking showers but she is finally back to tubs. I still have two of the three that are left and she saw them the other day and freaked.

We will never shop at Basin again and highly suggest no one else does either!

Yellow - do you make fizzies??

Wow - thanks for the post! DD loves these. But we also like Lush, actually like their products better, they don't seem to be as "perfumey." They don't make the Mickey bombs though!

I would definitely look into it, because I'm pretty sure that their comments alone about thinking that there may have still been bad ones but not doing anything are case for negligence. It's a compnay's social responsibility to recall ALL of a product when they find bad ones, not just the ones they still have one their shelves. It's totally stupid to think that just by pulling them off of their shelves they have gotten all the bad ones.

I'm so sorry this happened, especially for your little girl. When kids are little they don't understand things like this, so all she understands is bath and fizzies equal pain, and that's a really heartbreaking thing for a parent.

However, glad she is okay now and hopefully the two of you can get back to having a fun bathtime!!!! :grouphug:

Is this something that you could just report to the Better Business Bureau? Or the Consumer Products Safety Commission?

I do make fizzies. That's why I'm not understanding how they could have put the fragrance into those in such a quantity to cause that kind of reaction. Fizzies are only lightly scented compared to other products. I also use mostly essential oils in my fizzies - for aromatherapy purposes. (I need to make another batch or two in the near future...)

To be fair to Basin for some of their other products - all of their glycerin soaps are made for them by a company called Primal Elements. One visit to Primal's website shows that to be true. Primal is an extremely reputable company for glycerin soaps and yo can buy from them directly. I do NOT know who makes their fizzies or their cold process, but it is contracted out.

This is deeply concerning. Podcast crew, can it be mentioned on an upcoming show so others are aware of the issue?

Aaahhh the dreaded Mickey Bath Bombs. Happened to my son too. I called them and was told to throw them away. I did immediately run an oatmel bath and my sons hives went away with that. They sent me about $100 worth of products to replace 2 bath bombs and the manager said she was sorry over and over again. We bought ours back in November and didnt use them until much later. So I dont know if her explaination was truthful. All of the other bathbombs were fine. Only the yellow bombs with the red/white/black Mickey heads did this to him. I thought it was just my batch but it appears to be a problem with that particular bath bomb I guess. I am sorry you had to go through that.
