Bat Mitzvah party.... dress code?

Not the actual ceremony, but the party for the kids... do the adults go formal or casual?

It might depend on where it is, but the ones we've been to semi-formal. Pretty much same as the kids.

Usually it depends on the theme. One I went to was Formal party, an another was a casual one. They are all different...I would say dress to look nice. Maybe not "Fancy" nor casual. Just look nice

I haven't been to a casual one since I was that age. I have one in two weeks, and yet again it will be formal. I wear the same thing I would wear to an evening wedding. This seems to always depend on where you live though, so if you are out of the tri-state area it may be more casual.

DS attended 3 this fall. At each party, parents were dressed nicely but no one had on a tux or a long dress. The parents of the honored child were of course the most dressed up. I'd say "semi-formal" is a good guideline.

I think it's perfectly fine to ask the hosts.

We've been to a few and they've run the gamut from very casual to pretty formal.

Check the invite. Most of the ones my daughter has attended have been black tie formal. When I have dropped her off, I have seen people in formal suits, tuxedoes and floor length gowns.

The venue and location should indicate to you.

Since my son's is in 2 weeks (Feb. 5) I can tell you what we're doing.

It's services in the AM then on to a restaurant for the luncheon/reception immediately following. Dress is not black tie, as it's not a Saturday night affair. I expect that everyone will be in either nice dresses or suits and the men in suits or sport jackets and slacks. I will be in a rockin' silver grey sheath dress (Calvin Klein), dh in a suit, DS (the bar mitzvah) in a new suit with sharp dark lavender shirt and great tie, and younger DS in sport jacket and slacks.

I know my mom got a new 3 piece pants suit (silver blue design on the top/jacket), sister is wearing a lovely suit. I've been to synagogue enough to see that the kids who are invited tend to dress like it's a prom (for the girls with short, dressy dresses) and most of the boys have on jackets. But the minute they get to the reception, jackets off, shoes off, etc.

DS was invited to his 1st Bar Mitzvah last year. I had ABSOLUTELY no idea as to the etiquette, dress code, etc. I called the mom, begged her to have mercy on her Irish Catholic friend, and asked what to do. She was happy to help, and was thrilled that we asked.

In this case, it was a Saturday morning/afternoon affair. DS and his friends wore nice dress pants, button down shirts, ties, and dress shoes. The girls all had on short, dressy dresses.
