Baseball 08

Wow, what was suppose to be an action packed weekend turned into a sleeper!! All 3 games were rained out!! Someone said to me at chuch, "aren't you glad!?" Truly, NO!!!LOL I was hoping to get some play time with my Mothers Day gift!! ( new lens!) I actually found myself very dissapointed yesterday with no baseball ( I never thought I'd hear myself say that!!).:upsidedow

I go into withdrawls every year when the season ends, so I know what your talking about. My son played his last game of the season last friday.

Wow, our season is just beginning. :confused3

Can I share some funny stories from this season so far?

At last week's game (pics posted above), by accident we sat on the "wrong" side but decided to stay put rather than move.

DS10 is up on the mound pitching. And DH overhears the coach of the other team say to another parent, "Hey, that kid's throwing knuckleballs!! And other off-speed pitches!! OMG, he just threw a change up!!" They were howling laughing, and DH heard them talking about it again later on. I said to DS after the game, "Were you throwing knuckleballs?" and he was like, "Yup"! Too funny. I have no idea how he learned that, other than by watching Tim Wakefield pitch. You can see his intensity in the picture with the catcher's gear on; he wasn't happy with the way the inning went. (I actually really love that picture, DH had it made up for me for Mother's Day.)

And one other. Humor me.

So in order for DS to catch, we had to buy him a "cup". I've never bought, or had anything ever to do with a cup before in my life, LOL, so I didn't know the first thing about buying one. In the store, I decided to get him the spandex underwear that has a little slot for the cup. Yes, that looks fairly simple. He was quite proud when he first tried on his new "gear", but, you know kids, the little cup itself wound up everywhere. DH stepped on it in the dark when he was getting ready for work one morning :rotfl: and just before the first game wearing it, he grabbed it out and threw it in the cupholder of my car. Lo and behold, DD, who was sitting in my car during the game, comes walking out with it holding her tooth that had just fallen out of her mouth. :scared: Glad I spent $30 on this thing!! :rolleyes1

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

(Sorry Gregg, just had to share with others who can appreciate this.)

No worries. It would be my strong suggestion to you though that you infom DS that he will wear a cup each and everytime he goes out to field for practice or a game, it is either that, or he doesn't play. He'll complain for a bit, but then it will just become what he does.

I have seen too many kids hit that didn't have a cup on. One of them is is now one short of a pair because of it, not something you want to have happen to your 10 year old.

Actually, it did happen to one of the kids during the game manning a base. DS saw it and has been wearing it since (we also read him the riot act). Catching seemed to be the big issue, though. I suppose it's most in harm's way in that position. But it should probably be required all the time. At any rate, he'll be wearing it from now on.

Love the stories Pea-N-Me! But I have to echo Master Mason's suggestion about the cup. We had one of our catchers really "catch it" so to speak. The crowd went quiet because the thunk sound the ball made against the cup was so loud we all heard it! If he had not had it on, it could have been a serious injury. As it was,he was on the ground for a moment. (which was followed by some giggling, once we all knew he was okay!) Slide shorts help a lot because they have a pocket for the cup. Our league has a rule, no cup - no play! If you get caught without one on, the ref's have the coach pull you out of the game. My son complained all last year,(a lot!) but he wore it anyway. Now it's just part of the uniform!!;) Good luck - he will get used to it!!!

Yea lots of leagues have a rule for the catcher, but don't extend it to the field. That was one of the rules I put in place when I was the Player Agent, now every male player must have a cup to play.

OT here - but Master Mason, I love your Belle! We lost our chocolate lab one year ago today. :sad1: Seeing that little puppy face in your avatar brings back lots of memories - mainly of chewed shoes and stolen socks!! We miss our guy a lot, I'm hoping your enjoying her while she's a puppy!!
Blessings,

Blessings,

What is the sock stealing a genetic trait? She is a good girl, 10 months on Wed, but I don't think labs stop being puppies till around 5 or so:rotfl:

sorry about losing your lab, it's like losing a member of the family

:lmao: Duffy was still a puppy until he was around 7 years old, he then began to settle into long afternoon nap routines - but in the morning he was a wild man!!! Always wanting out the door before anyone else!!:goodvibes And yes, we miss him lots. He was our "baby" for two years before the real ones began arriving!!

When I played little league I spent most games as the catcher. I wore a cup most definately. It wasn't during a game, but at one of the town clinic's I was playing catch with another kid (I think I was 9) and I missed the ball and it hit me square in the !@#$$*!&#!. It took a few hours for me to fully recover.

For one all-star game I had the coach of the team tell me that if I wanted to play and be the catcher I had to wear a cup. No cup, no catch.

Hopefully that other kid wasn't me! If so, sorry man! :lmao:

Where we are not only do the boys have to wear a cup to step on the field for game or practise but the GIRLS DO TOO!!! (it's called a jill strap;) )

We actually discussed that, but those things are expensive, at least they were 5 years ago when we were passing the rule.

And just to keep it on pictures, here is a picture of my kid playing with his cup as he does all the time :confused3

:goodvibes Catching up on all the posts!

My son, 11, throws a BEAUTIFUL change up. We were in a tournament last weekend, and were disappointed to see a few of the other 11U teams throwing curve balls already. Go ahead, parents, I won't be seeing your kid pitch in high school!:rolleyes1 Btw, our non-curveball-throwing team won the tournie! Yay!:woohoo:

Our team requires a cup on every player, even when we have fielding practice. No cup, go home.:thumbsup2

Still waiting for a nice weather weekend of baseball! Will we see ONE this season?

Off topic a bit but when I was in High School hockey, the coach would come around with a stick and smash it into our privates. If we didn't have on a cup, we hit the floor. It taught us to ALWAYS wear a cup. :scared1:

Wahoo!! We got to play today!! :thumbsup2 And it was sunny out, most of the time, we had one little rain shower, but it was over in about 30 seconds! Actually, my son and a bunch of 7 to 9 yo's got to play - BUT so did this happy mom!! I took the 85mm f/1.8 and shot all day with it. Below are a couple of my fav's. All I've done is crop and run a defog filter on them at 45 %. I shot them on P mode ( had meant to change that to AV, but somehow never did!) at 1600 iso. I have a couple of others I'd like to share, but realized that a few of the kids faces were a little to clear - I'll blur those out then post!
Thanks for looking!:)
