Baseball 08

thanks, I'll give it a try sometime. :thumbsup2 doesn't look like tomorrow though. sigh. The only place in America where it'll be raining!

I don't think my zoom gets that wide open; maybe I'll try a few with my 50mm 1.8.

Going to see if i can do it! Here it goes....

Wow! Great color and sharpness! :thumbsup2 What lens did you use?

Thanks! I have an Olympus E-500... and i used my 40-150mm lens. At this time, i had it set to the sports mode.... focused on my son and then when the pitch came in, i snapped the shot.

I'm so depressed. Games cancelled for tomorrow due to rain. sigh.:sad1:

At least you guys started your season already... we are still doing indoor practices, we won't start our regular season until April 19th.. i think. Can't wait though!! :rolleyes1

Been very busy these last two weeks but I should get in a couple high school games this upcoming week.

Gregg,

What shutter speed are those 2 shots that have the ball frozen on the bat taken at? You mention 1/250 as your minimum for freezing action, is that for the little kids playing? The league I shoot for is at the NCAA level and I have a real hard time freezing action with no blur at shutters less than 1/1000 and even then it is a little blurry. 1/2000 seems to be crisp.

The little kid is 1/2000 f/2.8 ISO 125 200mm The one compressed on the bat is 1/2500 f/2.8 ISO 125 165 mm.

When I say the minimum to freeze the action is 1/250 that means to me that anything below that is going to be unacceptable, there will be some blur at that speed especially in the bigger kids and adults, but the pictures can still turn out.

Here is an older example

1/500 f/2.8 ISO 1600 54 mm

Notice, the ball is not as crisp as the faster ones, but still a completely acceptable photo to me.

Although, I think I need to revisit the noise reduction SW at this point.

ETA: The one above with the tag is at 1/640 and there is a little blur in the glove.

You all are way more technical than I am but I like this picture with Mickey in it!

Gregg,

Thanks. That explains it well. I thought you were getting sharp stopped action at 1/250 and I wanted to know how you worked that magic! pixiedust:

I know what you mean by sharp and acceptable. I am hoping for sharp this summer, but under the lights at night, it makes high shutter speeds almost impossible even with the 70-200 f2.8. Bumping the ISO helps, of course, but then you get the grain and use noiseware and lose the sharpness.... It's a tough one to solve unless I can maybe get away with the 50mm, but I don't think I want to be THAT close to the action! :scared1:

Plus if your going below f/2.8, your DOF is razor thin so your going to get way more out of focus pictures with the people moving.

Yeah, unfortunately, that will be true too. One thing I am interested in trying this summer is the AI Servo focus mode. I didn't know it was even on the camera last summer as I had just bought it towards the very end of the season. Do you use this mode very often?
