Hoping someone with a Nook can help me with this. Do you have to have a credit card on file on the Barnes and Noble website or will they let you buy free books if you have a gift card on file. I'm thinking that with I-tunes, I just have to have a gift card on file and was wondering if I could do this the same way. Hopefully someone knows! Thanks!

Barnes and Nobles keys their DRM (Digital Rights Management) on an algorithm that is partly based off the credit card number attached to the account. So even for the free books you will have to have a credit card number on the account in order to download.

I think I hear that you can put in a prepaid visa card and it'll work. But those prepaid cards usually have nasty fees attached to it.

Does Barnes & Noble charge sales tax on its e-book downloads? I know you have to pay tax on the Nook when you purchase it but I am curious about the downloads.

I don't think so.
I remembered buying a 1.99 book being charged 1.99.

I've never paid sales tax when ordering from B&N. Also did not have a cc attached my acct right after I got it and I had no problems using my gift card to get books, they downloaded as soon as I purchased them.

For Agency priced books they are under the same Tax Structure as the listings on Amazon and all the other retailers.

For non-Agency priced books I've been told that Barnes and Noble is actually having to pay out sales tax to the authorities (since they operate in every state), but they are pricing the books as "tax included" so the consumer never sees it as a line item on the invoice. I have no way of verifying that but it makes sense.

If you didn't have a credit card attached, then they were not DRMd books - which is a small percentage of their catalog. Even most of the free books are DRM inclusive.
