barking dogs issue with neighbor

I'd just accept barking dogs as part of having neighbors. The nighttime barking only happened once so I don't really see it as a huge deal.
Its not like the dogs are outside constantly barking all day. There's lots of neighbor noises that are annoying..leaf blowers, lawn mowers, shrieking kids, bad music...it's all part of having neighbors.

You aren't the OP you have NO idea what her cops will do. If you call enough times they will do something. I know enough police to know this. If they keep getting called to the same address over and over again, trust me they'll do something!
Obviously im not the OP and I sure as heck dont know what the cops will do. Clearly. I just hope the cops in her area as as good as yours....cause in my area, nothing gets done.

If you knew me at all you would realize that would NOT be an option. What is needed here is training, for the humans.

That being said, MOST areas people live in do have laws about level of noise after certain times, and yes police often give "disturbing the peace violation" tickets.
And the ticket will magically make the dogs stop barking? After the ticket is issued, the dogs will know theyre suppose to stop barking?

Of course a ticket isn't a magical end all but it well let the owners know it is a serious issue that the need to address.

The neighbours knew it was a serious issue that needed to be address when the OP complained the first time.

The dog's owner was never approached. She mentioned it to the person who lives above the dog owner once. It doesn't matter that it is his mother, they do not live together, so the OP cannot be sure the owner received the message.

That does not sound like trying to resolve it with the owner first. I would have been concerned the message would not get to the dog's owner after the Mom laughed it off. As soon as the Mother said "yeah, they drive me nuts too," I would have made sure I followed up with the actual owner of the dogs so he knew my distress.

I'm admit I'm not familiar with his duplex buildings work. I assumed the mother abs son lived together and the OP was in the second portion of the duplex.

was I wrong for sending the city a letter--even after talking to her about it

Im anxious to hear what you have to say

No, you were not wrong at all. I can't imagine having let my dog disturb my neighbors like that. I would've been so embarrassed!

Heck no! You did the right thing. People don't realize how much barking dogs can aggravate people.

As a dog owner, let them out to do their duty and the second they start barking, I tell them to stop and get back in the house.
They do pretty good for the most part, unless the neighbors dog is out and then it's a "barkathon" and we put them back inside.

Barking in the middle of the night? I would call the cops for that!

ITA. We have 2 dogs and our beagle is a loud barker. As soon as either starts barking, we make them come in. Luckily, only one neighbor has a dog so they are usually just barking if they see a squirrel.

I think it's obnoxious to leave dogs outside barking for an extended period. And I would have no tolerance for extended barking in the middle of the night. You didn't do anything wrong.

I would not tolerate night time barking, but it seems that only happened once.

I am not sure what you can do about day time barking. I rented a townhouse next door to a woman who complained to me about my dogs barking when DH and I were at work. I got citronella collars for them and they seemed to deter barking (I'd hear them bark once when I approached the door coming home in the evenings, then they'd get sprayed and quiet down). She called animal control sometime soon thereafter and they sent us a brochure or something about barking dogs. It might have even been an advertisement for collars or something of the sort.

Well, I stayed home sick one day and found out why the dogs barked so much. She would shout across the cul-de-sac to another neighbor and have conversations several times a day this way. Between her shout-versations, the dogs were quiet. Silly woman was basically instigating them several times a day. I pointed this out to her friend - that Blabby was getting the dogs riled up by shouting just outside her doorway, but didn't feel comfortable telling her directly (she was . . . less than pleasant). I have no idea if she complained to animal control again, but I did not get any more notices about my dogs barking.

I just am not sure what can be done about dogs that bark during the day, but are indoors and are well cared for. I wouldn't get my hopes up about that.

I could understand you stance if it was in the afternoon but the OP said it was 2-4am. Those are hours your dogs really shouldn't be barking unless there is an intruder in your house.
Dogs know how to tell time? :confused3

Dogs bark late at night if they hear something.

I'm surprised in this day and age that anyone leaves their windows open at night!:scared1:

why wouldn't people? not all areas are bad. :confused3

My dog wouldnt bark late at night if he heard something... or even if someone came in... he's just lick them and would bug them to pet him... he's not a good watch dog :scratchin

:rotfl2: thats my dog too! He'd lick them and demand a belly rub. He'd probably even help carry loot to the thieves car!

It's the first line of the OP (bolding mine)... :confused3

I didn't realize that meant they may hardly ever see each other. I thought the op and neighbors house were connected and didn't realize there may be seperate entrances for neighbor son and mom. Like I said not familiar with duplexes so didn't realize one living above and one below means they could come and go with it conversing etc.

I guess I shouldnt assume, but I would think that by complaining to the mother, she would inform her son of the complaint! They live in the same duplex, and they are related. :confused3

without knowing them well, I would not make that assumption at all. Even if they talk all the time, she could have forgotten. I don't think you can assume the son knows there is a problem unless you have spoken with him directly.
