I saw a clip of Ted Kennedy talking about working with Barack Obamer.
Couldn't Teddy work on the proper pronunciation of Obama's name.

It's an MA thing isn't it?
Bob (God rest his soul) from the Dis podcast used to put the "er" sound at the end of some of his words. I miss it.

It IS the Massachusetts accent thing. Put "R"s where they are not and take 'em away where they are. That's just the way it is. I don't even hear it - because I speak that way too!

It's like getting mad at a southern person for saying "dawg"

It's a dialect, much different than a mispronounciation. When he says "nookuler"....THAT is a mispronounciation.

Besides being a reginonal thing, I would think that Sen. Kennedy had more important things to "work on" - like dealing with his health.

I thought he looked amazing yesterday.

exactly..regional and that pesky tumor in his brain...Some people on here better look into their souls, they may get a clue..

I think it's pretty infantile that folks make fun of President Bush's accent and the way he pronounces things. It seems to me it would be equally petty to do the same thing with a politician from the other side.

I lived in MA for almost 10 years so I am familiar with the accent...

I had a local tell me once that there was the MA Accent and then there was THE Kennedy Accent.

Another Teddy Quote was "Mike McQuire and Sammy Soosa".

It probably is that Boston accent, but would be nice if he pronounced the name correctly since Obama is the president of our country. Poor Ted Kennedy, though, he's had a tough time this year. He did look really good, especially considering the health problems he's had.

I wonder how he pronounces "chappaquiddick"?

I'm sure he avoids that word as much as possible.:thumbsup2

Having lived in RI for my formative years (12 thru 32 yo), the accent thing is still an enigma to me. They know that they are not pronouncing correctly, they just can't help it.

What I can't figure out is how children learn to spell up there. I knew how to pronounce my "R"s, and I had difficulty with the language! It is like living in another country :rotfl2: . Now I am here in the south......more language barriers!:lmao:

It's the accent. Not much he can do about it nor should he. PRESIDENT'S have been messing up pronunciations of places and people names for a very long time. It's no biggie.

It's not pronounced Eye-rack
And Saddam doesn't rhyme with Madame...

On a lighter note, one of my students came running up to me the day of the election to tell me she is hoping Bock Bahama wins the election.

I will probably get royally flamed for this, but I disagree with your statement that people should not do anything about their accents. Especially those who do public speaking. And this is a non-partisan statement. I see it on both sides.

Oh no! Here come the flames!!:firefight :furious:
