What is it for? The reason that I ask is because we were sent tags for AKL instead of the Poly. I was told to cross out AKL and print in Poly and in the mickey ears cross out AK and write in MK {for location of resorts}. Do I need to do anything with the bar code....we're leaving early in the morning and am still undecided if I'll use DME for fear that my luggage will end up at one resort and we'll be at another! :earseek:

If you are afraid of loosing your luggage I would not put the tags on and get your own luggage at the airport. You can put it under the Magical Express bus. That way you will know for sure where it is. Have a great vacation.

If you completely black out the bar code and the incorrect resort information, the luggage will not end up at the wrong resort.

You better check again on that. I too received ones that said AKL when I asked about it I was told this is not the resort I was staying at but the grouping. Careful about crossing it off before asking. I called WDW direct to inquire. We were set for CSR and were told that AKL was correct.

Correction:

Having read another post here on The Dis I am now unsure of the purpose of the bar code. One possible purpose is to match the baggage with your showing up at the ME welcoming area and getting on the bus. So I am also unsure of what would happen if you crossed out the bar code.

The right thing for the airport persons to do is deliver the luggage to the resort identified by write in anyway.

Sometimes I save leftover reply envelopes to put a blank label on and use to mail other things in, but if there is a bar code on the lower right of the envelope I throw that envelope away rather than go the extra mile, I mean millimeter, to cross out the bar code. U.S. Mail will misdirect mail with inapplicable bar codes.

Yes, the bar code lets the luggage folks know you actually got on the ME bus. Once you get on the ME bus, the bar code will also let the luggage folks know what resort you are going to. They should then fix the routing at that time.

I wouldn't mark out the bar code.
