Banza Chick Pea Pasta and low carb.

We use the Barilla stuff pictured above ... not for a carb reason, but because the added protein is good for the vegetarians in our family. I feel like there is a very slight texture difference, but not enough to really matter.

I sometimes count calories, and the chickpea and lentil pasta are great options. Not because they're low calorie, but they offer much more protein than traditional pasta for about the same calories.

Exactly. It isn't just about low carb or high protein. One has to look at the RATIO of protein to carbs to fat to fiber.

I haven't tried the Banza Chick Pea Pasta. It sounds like they stole/borrowed the idea from Barilla Protein Plus pasta, which has been out for years. I am loyal to the Barilla. I've talked about it so times on the DIS that I think people may suspect me of working for Barilla. :lmao:

Do NOT add salt to the cooking water. The pasta already is salted.

In addition to the chick peas, lentils, flaxseed & egg whites, it is contains semolina wheat too. So it is not GF.

OHH even better. Do you know the carb count?

This is the only pasta i cook at home now, I prefer the rotini, a little firmer without breaking into tiny pieces.
Try the rice. It is really good. I can safely say I have used all the shapes including the linguini. If you like the rotini check Costo they had the 5 pack for 799!

Unfortunately, that's really not a lot of protein, and the carbs are rather high (a diabetic should keep carbs to 45g or less each meal).

Keep in mind that a 2oz. serving of pasta is minuscule, as well.

I don't know about you, but I don't eat my pasta plain. I'd add 2-4 oz of cubed grilled chicken per serving and some filling veggies like broccoli, shredded zucchini & squash and grape tomatoes for a pasta primavera. That's another 17gr to 34gr of protein per serving for the chicken. Top the pasta with another 1/2 oz of grated Parmesan cheese and that's another 5gr of protein.

That 2 oz is dry, uncooked pasta.

My experience with various bean pasta shows that they don't really expand... 1 cup of pasta gives you 1 cup of pasta.

So its a trade off with Banza which has 13 g protien and 43 carb..... do I want more protein but more carb or do I want less carb but less protein? Does the extra protein over shadow the extra carb? Stuff like this makes me crazy! I will try the Barilla and let it boil down (no pun?) to taste.

Which is 4oz cooked and that is quite a bit of pasta esp when mixed with veggies etc plus it is filling very filling.

I try to stay in the 20-25 a day range for carbs so for me I would do 1/2 a serving and combine it with zoodles, other veggies and then protein from another source.
I love pasta, it was definitely the hardest thing to give up when changing the way I eat.

Thanks I used to use half a serving but then I got greedy!

I get greedy too sometimes. This thread has inspired me to do better though LOL

I've had this in my cart for awhile but haven't tried it- It has 8 net carbs

I just ordered this one- has 7 net carbs. It really hurts to pay that much for pasta, especially not knowing if I like it yet.

Did you ever get their bread? My friend got it he said it was like cardboard but I can get used to it.

Maybe you guys aren't cooking it enough? It does take a couple minutes longer to cook. I usually eyeball cook my pasta instead of using minutes. Also, I like my pasta cooked on the softer side, not al dente. So, that also takes a little bit longer. And YES, the Barilla Protein Plus does expand. Other than being a little bit saltier, (so don't salt the cooking water,) I find the taste, texture & size to be almost the same as "regular" wheat pasta.

Here is my comparison photo of the Barilla Protein Plus Rotini. The uncooked is on the left. On the right, the pasta is (a little over) cooked, even for me. I was on the phone at the tail end of cooking & was distracted. :headache: Yet, clearly puffed up (and a little TOO soft.) But, otherwise pretty identical to "regular" wheat pasta, but with a heck of a lot more protein, fiber & Omega 3s. :thumbsup2

 Am I missing something? I'm reading $11 for ONE 8oz bag of pasta? :faint:

I'll pay premium prices for some things. But, a pasta that is basically going to be the bland base of my dish and covered up with sauce, veggies & meat, is not one of them.

I was just convinced to finally spend $17 on a large bottle of blended/flavored olive oil. I eat more clean salads now than rabbits do. And I make my own hummus. So I drizzle it on. Someone had given me a bottle of really good quality olive oil. (I used to just get the dollar store brand as it usually just went in the bottom of my frying pan.) But, I really noticed the flavor difference when I ran out of the good stuff. So, now I'm buying good expensive olive oil.

But, for something that's going to stay bland, I think there are other ways to be low carb, and you'd have a cart full of food. Maybe keep looking? $11 for one bag is a lot. But, that's just me. Everybody has different sensibilities.

When Dd was diagnosed with celiac 10 years ago, that’s about what I paid for gf pasta. Now I can get it in the grocery store for under $3. Thanks for all of the trendy people for lowering the cost of gf products!

Nope, that is right $11 :scared1: I would never pay that much to feed my family but it will just be for me. I will cook regular pasta for dh and the kids and then 1 serving of that one for me. That way I'll get 4 meals out of that $11. (I think it has 4 servings it in it) so the sting of the cost isn't so bad.
I could make my own for much less, but I don't have patience for that so I'll just spend the money to not do that ;)
I've been eating low carb for years and I know there is plenty out there I can eat, but I like pasta so I do want to include it in my diet and it is nice that there are low carb options out there.
