Banking/transfer question.

I am transferring points into my account, the person I am getting points from says I have to bank them by May 2016,they have an October use year. However, my use year is June and I have to bank points by Jan 31. Do the transferred points go by my use year or theirs?

The transferred points retain their previous UY.

Good luck, the transferred points will not show in your account and in my experience, MS has difficulty using them for your reservation. The points retain their home resort status and UY.

Someday (lol) I will have points that I will need to bank prior to Mar 31st (Aug UY). If I wanted to take a trip in May, should I bank then make the reservation or vice versa? What (if any) is the difference?

You would bank the points if you wanted to use them for a stay after Aug 1st. If you wanted to take a May trip you would not bank those points or you could not use them and would have to borrow from the next UY. When you make the reservation does not matter - only the dates of the actual stay. For example - if it was a May 2017 trip that you wanted to take you can use your 2016 points which are valid for stays from Aug 1, 2016 to July 31, 2017. You could also use banked Aug 2015 points that would normally be valid for stays from Aug 1, 2015 to July 31, 2016 but if you banked them prior to your banking deadline of Mar 31sst you could use them for a stay from Aug 1 2016 to July 31, 2017. Or you could borrow your Aug 2017 points for a stay in May 2017.

As mentioned, the points will retain their own status...home resort and UY. You will have to call MS to use them since they don't match what you have. When you get points that are the same UY and resort as you, they will show up online...at least mine did. Probably one of the reasons if I was ever in need of points again, I'd look for ones that match what I have so that I could use them with ease.
