Banking Points

I've looked around and didn't really find an answer.

When you bank points can they not be used until after the new use year starts? i.e. 2009 banked points (Oct UY) can not be used until 10/1/10.

Also our first trip with our DVC points won't be until August of 2011. Our UY is October. I will be booking our trip to VWL in Sept. Will I be able to bank our points for this year and still use them towards our 8/11 stay? I plan to use our banked points from 2009 and our 2010 points. Why would I bank when I shouldn't need to, you ask?? Since this is new to me, I'm afraid I will forget to do it or our plans will change and I won't be able to bank after May.

I really hope I am making myself clear. I hope to, someday soon, be a self proclaimed expert regarding DVC and am hoping you experts will assist me on my road to self enlightenment

Banked 2009 points would have the same expiration as your upcoming 2010 UY points, so you should be able to use the combined banked 2009 & 2010 UY points for reservations anytime between 10/1/2010 and 9/30/2011. Banking/Borrowing are final transactions so just be sure you proceed carefully as you won't be able to pull the 2009 points back into your current UY if you bank them.

All points use is based on date of stay, not date of reservation. With an October use year (10/1/10 to 9/30/11), an August 2011 trip could use banked 2009, current 2010, borrowed 2011 regardless of when you make the reservation.

Sorry I just want to be clear. So if I bank my 2010 points I will not be able to use them until after 10/1/11? Again my concern is if our plans change after May 2010 I won't be able to bank the points and will have to use them by 9/30/11, that is correct?

I think you are confusing your 2009 and 2010 points. You are currently in your 2009 UY. So, you have until May 31st, 2010 to bank the 2009 points. They will then be good for travel Oct. 1st, 2010 - September 30th, 2011.

Your 2010 UY points won't start until Oct 1st, 2010. You will have until May 31st, 2011 to bank those points into your 2011 UY (which will then make them good from Oct. 1st, 2011 - September 30th, 2012).

If you are traveling in August 2011, you will be traveling during your 2010 UY. You can use 2009 banked points, 2010 current points, and borrowed 2011 points.

If you want to use your 2010 points for August 2011 trip, there will be no need to bank them--they will be current UY points. When you call in September, MS will use the 2009 points (which you need to bank by May 31st), your 2010 points, as well as borrow any 2011 points you need. And, if you decide to cancel that August 2011 trip, you would have to do so by May 31st, 2011 to bank your 2010 points into your 2011 UY. Regardless, the 2009 UY points will need to be used by September 30th, 2011.

That is right. With a UY that falls late in the year, a lot of your travel happens in the next calendar year.

So, with your Oct UY, the bulk of your travel takes place in 2011.
