Banking/Modify Question

I think I know the answer to this, but just want to bounce this off others to make sure I'm not looking at this the wrong way.

I have 80ish points left in UY21 (SEP UY) which I need to bank by the end of April. I'm leaning toward banking early because I'm 98% certain we don't plan to use them between now and August (I'm 99.9% sure we won't be using them before I need to bank, and I'm reluctant to gamble on planning to book after my banking deadline).

But if I make a reservation that falls in my UY22 before banking those points, it will only take current UY22 points for that booking, correct (because the UY21 points that haven't been banked yet are not eligible to be used for that booking as they would expire in August before UY22 begins)?

Then, after banking the remaining UY21 points, I would need to modify the reservation to have it replace some of the UY22 points with the now banked points?

I've read over and over again about modifying without actually changing anything, but having not attempted that myself yet, I'm still having a hard time envisioning the steps to rebook the exact same thing when "modifying." Even though you are making no actual changes, the system accepts the same dates as a modification and "rebooks" you for the same thing you had?

Supplemental question... If I made a reservation that is going to be "walked" and I bank those points after making the initial reservation, the modification of "walking" it to actually change the date of the reservation would cause the system to automatically re-allocate the points to use those banked points?

Thanks!

You are not required to change a single thing on an existing reservation in order to modify later to use your future banked points. You’ll just hit modify and go through the exact same steps as when you originally booked the reservation. When you get to the points page just be sure to select the contract that has banked points in it so they are used.

If you’re nervous, go into the booking tool and book something (make sure it’s not within the next 30-ish days so you don’t mistakenly end up with holding points) with your 80 points and then play around with modifying it. Modify with no changes, modify to change dates, modify to change resorts, do whatever until you’re comfortable with the modification process.

A couple of follow-up questions...

I just looked more closely at the point breakdown on my contracts. The points I will be banking are split between both contracts (same UY and membership).

There are 33 current points on one contract with 220 coming in September. The other contract has 53 current points with 160 coming in September.

So, when I bank, it's still going to keep those banked points separated by contract, correct? In other words, after banking I would have 253 for one contract (220+ 33 banked) and 213 for the other contract (160 + 53 banked).

In order to use ALL of the banked points when making a reservation, I'll need to select BOTH contracts for the booking, correct?

So, let's say I'm booking a 310 point stay. I select both contracts so that it uses all 86 banked points. That leaves 224 current points that will be used. Will it take as many as it can from the first contract selected until it's empty and then take any balance still needed from the other?

So I will have 0 left in one contract, and 156 left in the other. Is there any reason why it's better to have 0/220 & 156/160 vs. having 156/220 and 0/160? The first option leaves one of the contracts mostly full, but it's the same number of points, so does that really make a difference?

You got it. It will pull banked from both. There is a screen right before you confirm the modification makes it seem like it won’t, but it does, as long as both are checked,

When choosing, make sure the contract that you want the UY22 points to come from checked first, as it will use up those after the banked ones.

The only difference might be if one is direct and the other resale. I try to use my resale points first and leave my direct points, so that I can book Riviera if I choose, or some kind of members only special event comes along that requires available direct points to use to book to take advantage.

Good point, but not applicable in my case... both resale contracts. Thanks for that insight. It might be helpful if we decide to buy a direct add-on in the future for Riviera.
