Bank with fewest fees?

I have to put in a vote for credit unions. In my neck of the woods, they are the only ones that offer anything free any more. A friend of mine got her son a debit card, that sends alerts to her phone incase he is heading for an overdraft or something.

We bank with USAA! They are advertising right now that they don't charge you to use your money (in response to the $5 debit fees).

ATM fees are reimbursed (up to a max amount, but I Don't remember what it is). Our ATM at Costco and one other local bank don't charge us anyway--which is nice.

It is really awesome! If he has an iPhone, there is a free banking app and I *think* he can make deposits from his phone. Deposits are immediate! No waiting for the check to clear or for it to not be a holiday. Very nice! (I had heard that there may be restrictions on who can use the deposit by phone feature, so this needs to be verified.)

We even used to get rewards from using the debit card--but those are going away.

I find that they make remote/on-line banking extremely painless.:thumbsup2 We have been banking with them for almost 14 years, though my husband has banked with them even longer.

Thanks for all the replies. My brothers are Navy men and they use USAA. But does anyone know if they can sponsor me to join?

USAA also has an app for Andriod Phones and iPods, I have them on each.

You can only do the scan deposits if you have a credit card and one other type of account. We dont' have a CC with them, so we can't deposit from home, but most UPS stores have that option available for USAA members.

USAA polled it's customers to see what they would rather have rewards or no fees, that is great customer service.

Yes, I believe they can. I didn't know I could have had an account all these years because my father was in the service.

DH and I moved to the last December because he is a Reservist and we could have had it all the time he has been in the service and I guess I didn't know that.

I have two recommendations:

  • USAA Bank - it's all free, and they will reimburse ATM surcharge fees up to $15 a month. Great online/smartphone platform, too (plus, deposits can be made at any "The UPS Store" location).
  • PNC Bank - of the "big ones", PNC is probably the one with the least fees (plus, as they are currently in the process of merging with RBC Bank USA, they will add locations in FL, GA, AL, and the Carolinas, giving them a very large U.S. "footprint"). Also, check-out PNC's smartphone app -- it lets you deposit checks to your account with absolutely no hassles.

$15 per month -- it should also be noted that any ATMs owned by "Cardtronics" (regardless of the bank's branding on the machine) are surcharge-free for USAA withdrawals. These ATMs are most commonly found in certain drug chains as well as Target and Costco and in the calvacade of logos posted on the machine, the "Cardtronics" and "Allpoint" logos are prominent.

The restrictions are that the customer must either have an active loan or credit card with USAA -- otherwise, they must submit to a credit check to use this particular feature.

They are gone, already -- this was USAA's response to the Durbin legislation that put a stranglehold on them, and other large banks.

They are very good, indeed, and I recommend them to anyone who doesn't require a physical bank branch for everyday business.

Nope, anyone can qualify for a bank acct thru USAA. Read Others under the link that oyu posted. They wouldn't qualify for Auto Insurance, though.

I see that now. Thanks. I do miss the days of USAA being for Officers of the military and dependents only (as a USAA commercial is playing on tv now).

You are correct -- since USAA is an actual bank (and NOT a credit union), there are no restrictions as to who can open accounts, there...
