Bank account question

Is it possible for two people at the same bank to have the same account number but a different routing number? I just had an online deposit show up in my account yesterday that I know I didn't make. So today the 'scan' of the deposit slip showed up and it was a temporary slip and the account number was the same as mine! I am going to call on this tomorrow when the bank is open, but I wanted to check because I plan on insisting that his account number be changed (especially since his is new and mine is many years old) but I am thinking that could lead to way too many mistakes in the future. I just didn't even think that was possible - I was really surprised to see his deposit slip with my printed account number on there. But I sure would have loved for that deposit to be a mystery one that could have stayed!! :lmao:

I don't think that's possible... I think each bank has an individual routing # exclusive to the bank (like an ID #). Somehow they must have mixed up your account #s.

Um...no. Typically an account number is "local" to that branch. And a routing number is a regional thing. When a person opens up a new account, the computer system or human system (depending on whether or not it's an archaic branch) only picks from accounts that are brand new. For example, the bank I used to work for had 10 digit account numbers. The first two digits reflected the kind of checking account they had (interest bearing, money market, standard). The next three numbers reflected the originating branch. The final 5 was the actual account number. So, effectively it was impossible for people at different branches to have the same account number because each account was branch specific.

Now, you're saying that this person has the same account number but a different routing number at the same branch?? Extremely odd, unless he opened up his account at another branch and switched to yours. But even so, they should not have given out that same account number for the reasons listed above. It wasn't in the "pool of accounts" to pick from.

Most likely I would have to call it a teller error. I would absolutely call the bank in the morning and get things figured out.

yeah... been there done that. DH went to open an US Bank checking account, we make payments out of that and they never show up as getting taken out of it. Come to find out, there was another account number that was the same as the one that was assigned to us.

Yeah... the bank made a major boo-boo on that. Definitely call the bank, show them the evidence, and have them fix it.

The deposit slip didn't have the branch on it, just the name of the bank and the city, state and zip of their main location, just like mine, so I'm not sure where he opened his account. Hopefully it will be an easy fix when I call. That poor guy is probably wondering where his money is! If he had put his phone or address on his deposit slip, I might have tried to contact him, but he only put his name.

Wendy, just remember to put any correspondence in writing (even if you intend on taking it up verbally with someone, I would follow it up with a letter). It would be beneficial to you in case anything comes up later on.

It sounds like someone at the branch had fat fingers and keyed the account number wrong. Account numbers may be similar, but the last digit is usually a calculated number to avoid sequential numbers being used.

At least it was a deposit into your account. It may have been worse if it was a withdrawal and the bank bounced checks on you in error.

You should make sure you check your account online every day for the next month or so. Any checks he has written will also come out of your account, even if they change account numbers, they could still slip up. That's all you need is having your checks bounce. Good luck
