Ban smoking at the MK?

It may have more of an affect on a theme park that relies heavily on foreign tourists.

Also there is a big difference between banning smoking at a restaurant where, if someone wants to smoke, they have to walk 30 feet to be outside and a theme park where the walk to go light up could be over a mile.

They are on a plane and unable to smoke longer than they might stay in the parks. Again, do you really think they will stop coming? They will continue to come, just like American smokers will continue to come.

My mom is unfortunately one of those smokers, and there is no way she would visit WDW ever again if they banned smoking. I'm not sure why you think it wouldn't stop people from going. Smoking is a horrible addiction. I can easily see it stopping many people from vacationing at WDW and going elsewhere.

18.1% are smokers. I would think adults make up about 50% of Disney guests. So 9.05% of all guests are smokers. Of the 9.05% they MIGHT lose 1% of them to a ban on smoking. Meaning they would lose .0905% of their daily attendance. Not significant enough if the public trend indicated a desire to ban. They MAY even be able to make it up by attracting a health nut family who wants to support Disney for doing it....

Again. the restaurants SCREAMED that it would kill their business and it didn't. Business increased. PP indicated the same happened with bars. Disney would easily be able to ban smoking.

Why can't the smokers take up e-cigs for a few days while here? Don't they have nicotine in them to satisfy their need for a few hours while at a park that is full of young children? I used to be a social smoker and even back then I never smoked in the parks (but I wasn't hooked either).

That's been brought up in other threads but it's still not good enough. People still complained. You can't win.
I do not smoke around children. The only time I ever saw a child close to the smoking section was when a nursing mother sat down in the smoking section to nurse her baby. I put mine out and nicely pointed out places to sit outside of the smoking section. She didn't care and kept right on feeding her baby. A couple of other smokers and I left the area flabbergasted that she chose to sit in that area with her baby.

Personally I wish they could simply be banned, as they are in restaurants and bars in a lot of states/cities now.

If they wanna pollute their lungs and body, great, but they should not be able to freely do it to other people. In the best of all worlds, if not outright banning smoking, Disney would build a glass box and let them all go in there and smoke all over each other.

But since what I personally want isn't relevant, what they SHOULD (and can) do is move all the smoking spots further away from the crowds. Some of the spots are already decently far away, but others are simply too close to major thoroughfares or eateries.

And, again, if Disney were to build a glass box, or create an enclosed smoking area, that would force smokers to smoke indoors. Smoking indoors violates not only the law in most locales, but also Disney's own rules. Policies. Whatever.

Smokers in designated smoking areas at WDW aren't "freely [doing] it to other people". The American Cancer Society in negligibly, if at all, concerned about brief occasional encounters with outdoor second-hand smoke.

People with concerns about the locations of the small, few smoking areas throughout the parks should be contacting Disney with recommendations regarding which ones should be moved, and where.

Rarely. The majority of intercontinental flights require one or more connections. Nonstop from Berlin to Orlando is about ten hours. Most people spend ten or more hours - and multiple days - in parks.

Interesting extrapolation. Most people don't travel to Walt Disney World alone. Smokers who stop going in the event of a smoking ban have families or other travel companions who also won't be making those trips.

If you first read what I quoted and was responding to, it should be apparent my response wasn't about their families. I was demonstrating how the extrapolation of stopping merely 0.0905% of potential guests from becoming actual guests is wrong - because in each instance it's not just one guest. It's entire travel parties.

And the percentage of smokers in other countries (read: international visitors) is frequently higher than in the United States.

So, just to be clear - although I thought I was - my response has nothing to do with smokers' travel parties being able to go to WDW. Its solely about the 0.0905% calculation being too low.

It's not snark. I just don't particularly care if smokers decide to not come to WDW because they can't smoke there, or decide to not bring their families because of it. Seems like a really bad reason to miss out, especially when there are other options, like a patch, gum or eCigs. As a former smoker, I just can't muster any sympathy.

my husband and I smoked for all of our adult lives. if you have watched the Mad mend series, that's how it was then everyone did.

we are both pushing 60 and have been smoke free for over 3 years now.

we have over 25 disney trips under our belts. I am so happy now to be smoke free. and I don't likebeing around smoke now, either.

however, I think it is totally unfair and unreasonable to expect smokers to try to go the wntrie day without a cigarette. we KNOW that it is an addiction. we KNOW that many smokers became addicted years ago.

it is very easy for non smokers to avoid the dsa's .
I further think that the more they limit the dsa's. the more smokers will stop trying to abide by the rules. you just make it impossible!

I remember when we were smokers. the DSA near the fountain at epcot was SO TOTALLY out of the way from everything!!!! there was NO reason to go there unless yuo wanted to smoke.. and anyone walking past the fountain was WAYS awayfrom any smoke.

so, naturally, they did away with it.

well, all of us smokers just kept using it anyway, and "playing dumb" and it was reinstated. (I don'[t know if it is still there now)

they made AK almost impossible for smokers to obey the rules. then they keep that stupid DSA by ALOHA Isle. I swear, they keep that one, just to irritate the non smokers enough to keep the pot stirring.....

now that I haven't had a cig. in over 3 years.. I actually can't STAND smelling cig smoke. (and I smoked for 40 years)

and that is why I don't go near the dsas and I think it would be AWFUL and UNFAIR if they did away with those, at both the parks and the resorts.

I think Disney is relying on visitors from outside the USA far too much right now to further reduce smoking.

OMG!!! this is SO TRUE!! you really think they are going to risk the south american and european tourisst???? esp the SAs when we had brazillians at our resort,, ... taking our loungers at the pool, kicking soccer balls at our window at 1 am, blocking our way on the walkway, numeorous threats, etc etc. we were told "July is Latin month at disney" by a management Cm on a segway, at our resort.

I, too, think they put that smoking spot in the wrong place - it always catches us by surprise, also such a wonderful place to stop and relax with a dole whip or other. Doubt it matters much to most 'where' they smoke - they just need/want a place to take a puff.
yup i stated earlier. there have been numerous complaints about this dsa. disney jknows it's a problem .. and yet...? even back in chicaog's "hey day" there was no smoking allowed at the big ice cream parlors cause it ruined the flavor. stirring the pot?



Another place that 'really' annoys me is the Gateway area at Epcot. You have 'no' choice but to run the gauntlet there - it's also a lovely area that everyone should be able to stop and relax without breathing smoke.
I beleive for a year at least now, that smoking area is way off . down towardsthe canal, an no where near the major walkway. but people keep mentioning it.
As for what a pp said about Disney catching it if they were to ban smoking - people would just have to get over it - they also didn't like restaurants banning it, or other 'smoke free' zones. It's definitely a health issue.

nope. not a comparison. at a restaurant, people can just step outside to have a smoke. if you are , say, way back in the park, you can't just "step outside" not a good analogy at all.

an dI am just being devil's advocate here. like I said , I quit. smokers are going to smoke... you make it too difficult, and they will smoke anywhere. it's an addiciton. give them a break.
