Lawmaker Aims To Ban Fish-Nibbling Pedicure

ALBANY, N.Y. (WPIX) - An unconventional type of pedicure, in which people stick their feet into a tank of water and let tiny fish nibble away, may soon be the thing of the past.

An influential lawmaker is looking to ban the practice - which first made its way into the U.S. from Asia last year - and involves the aid of tiny carp fish sucking away dead skin from the feet of beauty lovers.

While many people seem to enjoy the unusual foot treatment, State. Sen. Jeff Klein, a democrat from the Bronx, unveiled legislation Monday that would ban the practice throughout New York state, calling the practice unsanitary and inhumane.

"Women may think it's the latest in luxury nail treatment but it's not," Klein said in a statement. "Fish pedicures are dirty and dangerous and a serious risk to one's health."

Klein's office said the fish could possibly spread fungal and bacterial infections - something that health officials have previously warned about in the past. In addition, Klein warns some fish may even grow teeth and bite customers hard enough to draw blood.

Klein's bill would carry a $250 for the first offense and make consecutive offenses a class B misdemeanor.

Several other states - including Pennsylvania and Massachusetts - have already banned the practice.

What the heck? Fish biting at my feet would be a form of torture, not a relaxing beauty treatment!:scared1:

Ewwww. I hate fish AND feet. A fish pedicure would be like my own personal hell. :scared1:

I recall seeing this in an episode of Ugly Betty. I'm not a series fan but this particular event somehow stuck with me, now I understand why!

I don't get why people would want to do this!:scared1: What's wrong with using a good foot scrub?

Fish nibbling on me is one reason that I HATE going in to lakes, rivers, oceans etc.. This is the most awful torture I can imagine!

And how many feet have been in there with those fish?

My niece had it done. She said it was great. I haven't gotten up my nerve yet, but I had planned on it.

I saw this on Good Morning America about a year ago and thought it was the dumbest thing ever.

Think about it. You are already risking infection when you get manicures and pedicures. And hey, I get then twice a month so it isn't like I'm against them.

But with the fish, your feet are in the same water as everyone else before and after you. Fish are living organisms, and who is to say that they are not swallowing all that dead skin.

Yeah, ew, gross. Not my feet, thanks!

ME TOO!! It sounds disgusting to me. Of course I would not go for a pedicure because sticking my feet into one of those foot baths makes me think of sticking my feet in a toilet someone else just used.

I can see unsanitary, a health issue, etc, but inhumane? If the fish didn't want to "nibble" they wouldn't. It isn't as if they are very "smart" can can be trained. A goldfish's memory is so short that it doesn't realize that it is swimming in a small bowl.

Fish scare me (childhood trauma, it's a long story):rotfl2: so I would never willingly stick my feet in anything holding them.

I like getting Fish feet when in Malaysia and challenging my friends and family to it.

What I am scared of is the full body experience - can you imagine a fish brazillian?:scared1:

I'm with Ashley... ew ew eeww eeeeeewwww!!! :crazy2: :crazy2:
