Baltimore BOT-Fest

Colleen - The brewing went well, although I'm starting to think we might have done something wrong, as the fermentation doesn't seem to going too well. The little yeast aren't bubbling enough....we'll see. We won't know what it actually tastes like for another 4 weeks or so. :thumbsup2

So when did Mindy get a flat screen?

Chester - Here's hoping you get paid for those invoices soon! RU going to EE? BTW, I say go to Desert Island in ME!! If you do, perhaps I'll join you???popcorn:: Been wanting to run that bad boy.

Jodi
EE is up next for Miranda and me. It looks like the obstacles are going to be part of the 5k course this year. That should help Miranda out - since she needs to take breaks during the run anyway. I'm looking forward to it - but it's going to be HOT!

I haven't registered for Desert Island yet - The $60 entry fee is good until July 31st when it will jump up to a whopping $65. I'll probably make my decision soon - if checks come in.:confused3

I'm thinking about trying some minimalist shoes - don't think the 5 fingers will work for me - although my toes are almost as long as fingers.

BOT wishes to everyone,

Chester

Hi Bots!

Finally checking in like I promised.

Jodi – Do you have a date set to tap your new stout? Can you wash the five fingers? How do you keep them from being super stinky? (To answer your question, we got a new TV this past weekend).

CindyLou – I’d love to hear more about the Relay. I really, really, really want to do one some day.

Howard- Thanks for updating us on Cam. I hope that her recovery is quick.

Jen – Do you have your costumes all set for this weekend?

Chester
– Mount Desert Island is on my “want to do list” but I don’t think it will work this year because we are headed down to FL for the Wine and Dine a few weeks before and have MCM a few weeks after.

Sara – Thinking of you and hoping that you are continuing to build up your strength.

Lou – Definitely let us know if you head down this way. Not sure that running a race in the middle of July is high on my list of things I want to do.

Mike – I hope your knee continues to get better.

Colleen – Thanks for the biology lesson. Ew. Sometimes living in a condo is really nice. I LOVE the new TV. For the record – I was trying to convince Matt for years that we needed a better TV – so glad I finally won. Now he agrees we should have gotten one a long time ago.

To answer Jodi’s question, yes I am running, mostly shorter runs during the week and only slightly longer runs on weekends (and no running occurred when we had house guests). Matt and I did run a Quarter Marathon 2 weeks ago. Given how little I’ve been running, I expected I was going to have trouble even maintaining a 10 minute pace, but I actually ended up running it in under an hour, so a little over a 9 minute pace. I’m very happy with that, and I guess I haven’t lost as much fitness as I thought.

Hi Everyone!!!

I am sorry its been a few days but things have been a bit hectic, as you might imagine. I ran the DE Marathon and then two days later, whisked myself off to Seattle for a 5 day conference for work. The flights there and back, and the time change, were killer. Especially the jet-lag on the return flight. Then, Cam's surgery... she is home now, she elected to come home instead of stay another night in the hospital with a loud, obnoxious roommate and her extended family. :headache::sad2:

She is doing pretty well, and moving around slowly. She has a nice 4 or 5 inch vertical incision on her left kneecap and major stitches. The doctor switched up the procedure they had agreed on and went with another plan the morning of the surgery. Instead of inserting infant stem cells to re-grow the damaged cartilage, they used an allograft from a "tissue bank".

Allograft: The transplant of an organ or tissue from one individual to another of the same species with a different genotype. A transplant from one person to another, but not an identical twin, is an allograft. Allografts account for many human transplants, including those from cadaveric, living related, and living unrelated donors. Called also an allogeneic graft or a homograft.

Cam got a new area of tissue that covers the damaged area and the bone attached was tailored to fit in a matching hole they drilled in her adjacent bone. Overall, it should cut down her recovery time, her time to activity and she will be able to bend it and put weight on it... but not for at least a week or two. She is in an immobilizer at the moment and on pain meds. Mainly the generic substitute for Dilauded. Good stuff... that's what I had when I had the kidney stone back in 2006.

I have not run since the DE Marathon, duh. I don't have any me time right now to do so. I have been running to the office, to the hospital, taking Andrew to school, filling prescriptions, etc. Lots of fun. :rolleyes1

I want to get back out there soon. I am considering either the Disneyland Hafd or Philly Rock-N-Roll Half. I'd sure like the Coast-to-Coast medal. :rolleyes1

Hope you are all well and happy... stay cool.. looks like its getting hot out there!!!

Watch FB for Cam updates.

Bottage!

Howard - That sounds like one crazy schedule...I couldn't handle the time change thingie....ugh. I hope Cam is doing OK. Be nice.

Lou - I'm up for the Gold Race or whatever it's called :rotfl2:. Wait, how much do I have to run for that one?

Chester - WISH I was doing EE again, but not too keen about the temps you'll be encountering. Let me know if you sign up for Desert Island...popcorn::

Cindy - The stout should be ready in about 4 weeks...:woohoo:. We'll see how it turns out :scared1:. The 5's can just be thrown in the washing machine with powder detergent, but of course Bruce won't do that. He hand washes them with Simple Green - then you air dry them. They actually don't stink at all.

I ran in sneakers yesterday a.m. b/c my ankle has been bother me while getting used to the 5's, so I figured I'd try something different. And not to sound Douchey, but I don't think I'll ever run in sneakers again. It felt so awkward & heavy. Really weird. Of course we'll have to see how all this goes when there's snow on the ground, but for now? I'm a complete convert.

Good Morning Bots.

Jodi: Hope your ankle thingy stops hurting and it's not related to the 5's. I'm seeing more and more of them around.

Howard: Glad you are home from your travels. Best wishes to Cam for a speedy recovery. How's your recovery from Delaware? Congrats again on such a good race.

Cindy: Glad you are able to run and still have a semblance of fitness. Any races planned?

Chester: Sorry to hear of Tracy's snake. Good luck in finding good homes for all the mice.

Lou: The race sounds like fun. Hope you are able to put a team together.

The Ragnar Relay was such fun. I went into it expecting that at some point I would regret signing up, but that point never came. It was just great. The hardest part was the running. My first leg was really hot and hilly and I had to run 6ish miles. The night time run was fantastic. The weather was much cooler and there wasn't much traffic - it was great. The last leg was a bit tough since I had only gotten 90 minutes of sleep. Again it was really hot, but I only had 4.8 miles, so I got thru that. It was a lot of fun cheering the other teams on in addition to my teammates. I hope we'll do it again next year.

Have a great day everyone.
Cindy

Hi EVERYONE!!!

Cindy~ Thanks for the note! I am happy you enjoyed your Relay race. Great job!

First an update on Cam. She is still in bed pretty much of the time at this point. When she's not, she's sitting in a wheelchair for a change of venue. The swelling in her knee is down today and she is moving her leg (in an immobilizer) better and without as much pain. That is good. She is taking the pain meds, but allowing further periods of time between. That is good also. :thumbsup2

There is a race this weekend that kind of snuck up on me. With all the "happenings" around here it kind of slipped my mind. Cam and I had signed up for the Spring Lake 5 way back when. Now that the surgery is over, she's out of commission. It will be my first run since the Delaware Marathon on May 16.

Cindy~I recovered from the marathon in about 3 days... all the residual muscle soreness was pretty much gone by Wednesday (when I was in Seattle).

So, I am heading to our friend's place in Toms River, NJ tomorrow night, then we'll travel to Spring Lake early Saturday for the 5 Mile race. The 5 Miler is one of the largest 5 Milers in the nation. I think they consistently get around 8,000 participants (+/-). It begins and ends along the Atlantic Ocean (with adjacent boardwalk) and loops through town and past a lot of well manicured and stately homes. The race is well supported by the residents. I am not sure how I'll do, but I will finish and enjoy the run. My PR for this race was back in 2006 when I ran it in 44:18. This will be my 7th time running this race.

After the race, I'll head back to Toms River, clean up and head back to Delaware!

Have a great weekend everyone! Be safe out there!!!

Waiting for race reports.....popcorn::

Hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend filled with running & fitness :rotfl2::rolleyes:

Ok Jodi, you asked for it so here is my race report:

Went to the Oddyssey Half yesterday with a group of friends dressed as zombies from the game Plants vs Zombies. It is one of the top selling iphone apps, so I sort of thought more people would know what we were supposed to be but no such luck. We knew we looked pretty good so that was really all that mattered. The race was advertised as being capped at 5,000 people but turned out to have closer to 700. There were HUGE lines for the port-o-potties and it would not have been possible to get to the start on time and make a stop. For better or worse the race start was delayed due to general organizational issues so we were good in that department.

The course itself was ok with a loop through Fairmount Park then down to West River drive with an out and back in one direction then another out and back at the other end of the road before turning back into the park for an uphill finish. There were a few optional "diversions" on the course: a game of Jenga with huge pieces where you had to make a legal move and not knock the tower over before you could continue running; water balloons to aim at unsuspecting runners; and a long, narrow wet tunnel to crawl through. If you did the diversions you got some paint on your arms to mark that you completed them and then moved on. There was supposed to be a prize for person who was fastest with all diversions complete (I was in no danger of getting a prize for speed). The mile markers were kind of small with no time clocks except for the one at the finish line. There was also no electrolyte containing fluid on the course, just water.

We had fun with the costumes and yelling "BRAAAIIINS" to each other when we passed on the out and backs (each of the 5 friends runs at a different pace). The costumes were fun but I got hot pretty fast with the relatively warm temp outside and the high humidity. By about the 5-6 mile point I knew I was not going to have a good race. The lack of electrolyte caught up with me and the chomps I had with me just weren't enough. I had major calf cramping by mile 9-10 and could not run more than 0.1 mile without having a problem, so wound up walking most of the last 5K.

We did win 3rd in the costume contest finishing behind a flamingo and gingerbread man. Got some cool pint glasses instead of a medal (and got extra ones for winning in the costume contest). We went back to our friend's house post race and made use of the pint glasses then roasted marshmallows with the kids around a nice fire in the evening.

I have pictures up on FB of our crazy outfits (and one of the screen shot from the game). Sorry for the long winded report. Hope everyone is having a great long weekend.

There are some pics of us here http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2465727

Good afternoon...

Jen~ Good job on your run in Philly. It sounds fun, but not suited for the hot weather... maybe it should be scheduled in the fall?

I ran the Spring Lake 5 in New Jersey. I woke up in Toms River with heavy rain falling. It rained the whole way to Spring Lake, but it was raining hard in some areas, not so in others. The weather dude was calling for it to move out to sea but later in the day.

We got to Spring Lake and found a great parking spot along the ocean side of the main starting road and walked to pick up our shirts and pilsner glasses. They mail your bib to you, but you have to get the other items at the race. We got about 200 yards from the car and the sky opened up. Jim and Andrew continued to towards the tents to pick up the items, I ran back for umbrellas and then found them huddled under a tent flap a few minutes later.

The rain stopped before race time and other than it being humid and slightly on the warm side, it was good running weather. I started towards the front of the pack of the 7,581 people that ran this race. Yes, there were over 7,500 runners/walkers!!! It is a BIG race and its well supported by the community.

I got out fast and weaved through some slower runners ahead of me and managed a 7:49 first mile and I kept it rolling at the same pace for mile 2. From there I kind of sank into a groove, but a slower groove. I managed an official time of 43:00 flat (chip time) for the 5 miles. That works out to be an 8:36 Pace.

My splits were: 7:49, 7:49, 8:59, 8:59, and 8:57.

This was a 5 Mile Run PR for me by 1 minute, 14 seconds.
My Overall Place was 1,711 / 7,581

I finished fairly strong and enjoyed the race and post race refreshments. They do it right with: Aquafina water, sodas, Skinny Water, Bagels, Cookies, Jersey Mike's Turkey Subs, Doritos, Bananas, and Goldfish pretzels. Plus they give out a cool t-shirt, glass, 2010-11 calendar and medal each year.

Andrew finished in 57:19 (11:33 Pace) and my friend Jim finished in 39:21 (7:57 Pace).

Happy Memorial Day everyone!

:grouphug:

I think everyone is out BBQing.

Jodi: which race are you doing this weekend?

Howad - Nice time, there, slappy! That race sounds right up my alley!! Fairly short @ 5 miles, but TONS of schwag!! :rotfl2: I NEED that medal that you posted on FB...is it the same every year? A glass AND a shirt, too? I'm in. Give me the heads up when registration opens for next year, etc., if you don't mind. Tell Cam .

Jen - Your race sounds like it was fun, if not suffering a bit for a first year event. It happens. I just want to run in a zombie costume. That's so cool you got a prize for your efforts :thumbsup2:woohoo:. But you lost to a gingerbread man & flamingo? Really? Stupid judges.

The 1/2 I'm running on Sun. is the Iron Horse 1/2. I ran it last year & liked it pretty OK. I think it's the name that I like, really. Plus it's only about 45 mins. from my house...On that subject, I'm completely unprepared. I ran 6 miles Sat. & it felt good, but my left ankle/side of foot is being a drag. I'm going to my accu-guy tomorrow to see if he can't stick some needles in those tendons & loosen 'em up :scared1:.

Hope all you other freaks had a nice holiday weekend!! :dance3:. We transferred our stout Sunday to a "conditioning" bottle where it will sit for another 3 weeks. Then we will undertake the task of bottling 5 gallons 'o beer.

BTW, registration for the NYC HALF MARATHON opens TOMORROW!! Please go to NYRR.org & register, you a$$wipes!! The date is March 20, 2011. SPRING BOT GATHERING IN THE BIG APPLE!!

I can't find the stinkin' link to register.

Where is the link to the homepage for the race? I can't seem to find the right page.

Where is the link to the homepage for the race? I can't seem to find the right page.

It won't let you click on anything yet....just keep checking back @ nyrr.org. The registration is supposed to open up tomorrow @ noon.

So I assume that means both of you are going to register?
