Baltimore BOT-Fest

Colleen - yeah, I just seen an x

ETA - I'm no help on the picture posting front, I can't remember how to do it either.

Megan – Cool. I lived in CT from birth to 18 and then moved down here for school and haven’t left. And I actually went to law school at GW.

Kathy – Hi. Thanks so much for the Twizzilers!!

Colleen – I 100% want to do the Wine and Dine (heck, it’s a race with “Wine” in the title – what’s not to like?). I just need to see if the timing works out with everything else Matt and I have going on.

Mike – How’d the science project turn out?

Chester – I’m glad that you’ll still be able to do New Orleans.

Update on my running. As I think Jodi suggested, I ran 3 miles. My knee felt ok. Not great, but ok. At least I didn't have the horrible stabbing pain that I had last week. Then again, that didn't really start until I was in the fourth mile. I bought one of those patellar tendon straps at the running store today and I plan on putting it on and trying to run 4 miles tomorrow and seeing what happens.

PEEPS!! What up, BOTS??

OK, some stuff going on here today.

Colleen - Shuffle, walk, whatever, dude!!! you were OUT there. Good job! Glad to see you posting & glad you had a weekend "off".
I don't even remember what I was wearing @ NYC, let alone Lou.

Dave - Good to see you're running, too. Any residual effects after that 5 miler? Haven't listened to your blog yet, but when I do, I WON't be telling you so on your FB page. Too many "friends" for me to deal with :rolleyes1. We're gonna kick NYC's butt!

Chester - Hooray for the reprieve!! Hope New Orleans stays within your grasp. Weird town, though, be forewarned. :scared1:

Cindy - Glad your 3 miles went well, eager to see how tomorrow turns out. BTW, your "if the timing works out" quote is a bit cryptic....popcorn::. And yes, Spencer remembers your name. Thanks to you & Chicken-buddy for being so nice to him...he felt so grown up that night!! He needs that boost in self-confidence...apparently I've forgotten how hard it is being a freshman.:sad2:

Mike - Haven't read about any bizzare explosions in your VA area so the science project must be going OK.;)

Twizzler - Welcome! No pros here & no inspiration from me , but the others are good for that!

8 miles today, felt real good...we'll see how I feel tomorrow. :rotfl2:

Wine & Dine 1/2...really? For cyrin' out loud!!! Wait, how about a BOT party on the Friday night @ "Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party"??? Um, we'll have to drink beforehand.

Welcome KathyV! Don't expect much inspiration. Just be happy if you don't get called a D-bag!

Colleen - I'm telling that you are posting XXX (O.K., one X) pictures.

[Mike – How’d the science project turn out?
That Drunk Lady We Rode Rides With - Since you asked and since we can only talk about running stuff so much and since we have a fairly intelligent bunch here...

Here's the science fair premise: Make a slushy of ice and water then test the effect on the temp by adding different de-icing materials. The thinking was that the lower the resulting temperature (and thus the lower the melting/freezing point of water) the more effective the de-icer.

The results: Sodium chloride changed from 0 Celcius (32 F) to -5 C.
Mix of Magnesium Chloride, Sodium Chloride, and molassas:confused3 to -5 C.
Methanol to -3 C, blah, blah, blah.
The real confusing one was Calcium Chloride. It melted the heck out of everything but only pushed the temp down to -4 C. We would have expected it to push the temperature lower than everything else.

Why didn't that happen? Any ideas from the Einstein gallery out there??

Well, I never did get to the trails today which was probably a good thing judging by the general muddiness everywhere. I did get in 14 miles on the roads though. Ill prepared for it: no water, no toe socks and I hurt a bit more than I'd like, but WTH.

Mike - Nice job on the 14!:thumbsup2. That is all I can speak to re: your last post. Ask the Neuroscientist guy!

Matt and That Drunk Lady We Rode Rides With - Silly question I'm sure, but have you ever been to the Shenandoah Brewing Company? Kathy was just flipping channels and stopped on Unwrapped on the Food Network. SBC makes a chocolate donut stout that sounds pretty enjoyable!

Mike Cindy and I have had the chocolate donut beer. It actually has that nasty fake chocolate taste that chocolate donuts have (you know those mini donuts that are in vending machines). Shenandoah brewing is actually where I brewed my beer a few weeks back. I'm going back to bottle it in a few weeks.

As for the science project, I'd think that the chemicals don't actually change the temperature of the ice, but that they change the amount of ice in the mixture at a given temperature. Any change in temperature is probably unrelated to effectiveness as a de-icer unless there is actually a chemical reaction taking place that generates heat.

I will give this a shot.:confused3

1. Adding salt to the solution lowers it's freezing point.

2. For ice to melt, it needs to pull heat from its surroundings (latent heat of fusion) to go from solid to liquid, that is why it cools the surrounding water.

3. In the Calcium Chloride case, there is a balancing effect going on. When CaCl2 is added to the solution the reaction with water is exothermic (gives off heat), so you are getting the effect of CaCl2's generated heat balancing off the cooling effect of the ice melting.

Another thought, concentrations of salts in the solution affecting the temps??:confused3

Mike: Thanks for reminding me how much I hate chemistry :sad2:

Cindy: Glad the knee wasn't too bad with a short run. I hope it holds up for more miles. I really should have looked into Google University, would have saved me tons of money :lmao:

Chester: Glad Mardi Gras will work out for you. Butch will do Gasparilla pirate: on his own happy to know you are at the race you want to be in. We will both be in Disney for Princess, so hopefully you can come cheer again.

Jodi - 8 miles? Are you training or something?

Mike - I actually kind of like that chocolate donut beer, but it’s definitely something you don’t really want to have more than one of at a time and not really a beer to drink with food.

I’ve been icing my knee all morning in anticipation of my big 4 miler. I finally forced myself to look at my training log to see just how bad my training has been. This is pretty embarrassing and, after seeing the numbers, not really surprising that I managed to hurt myself. My total mileage for the entire month of December was 36. Seriously. With a long run of 8 on December 6th. My total mileage for the entire month of November was 46.2 with my longest run being the Richmond half on November 14th. That's even worse than I thought it would be. :sad2:

Quick report - 2 big thumbs up for the patellar tendon strap. My knee felt pretty good during the run. It hurts a little now as I am walking around after without the strap, but I'm icing it.

Mmmm, I haven't been there for a while. They do make delicious beer. I'll take my chocolate oatmeal stout over their donut one anytime though. :)

Jodi,

Do you recall what Lou was wearing for NYC marathon? Can't tell from the back if this is Lou?!?:confused3

NYCMarathon09

Colleen - There are NYC pics of NYC on my FB page. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=122142&id=591370928

I didn't see any pics of me on that thread unless I missed one. I hope you didn't think I was the guy wearing the body suit with a wedgy.

Hey BOTS!

I feel kind of left out, I mean I haven't been called a "D-bag" yet. :sad2: I know, the week has just begin.

I am in for MCM at this time, pending getting in the NYC Lottery. I booked my hotel room last night at the Holiday Inn - Rossyln/Key Bridge. They were almost booked up. :scared1:

Welcome to anyone who has wondered into this Venus Fly-Trap of the DIS Boards.

As you know, no running for me. I hope to get back to the gym beginning tonight and work off some of this weight I've taken on since November.

Lou~ I will be doing the Caesar Rodney Half, but no doubt will be taking it easy as it will be my longest run since the WDW Marathon.

Have a great week!

Quick post - Back from a 5 miler using the patellar tendon strap. I really think it works - my knee feels much better when I have it on. I'm icing it now.

Mike Did you sign up for the bull run run? If so, I hope you are out running right now :-)

Dave I listened to the 1/20 dis podcast, but didn't hear your marathon report or the interview with john bingham. Do you know if either of these segments is going to air?

Howard Has the doc cleared you for any exercise other than running? I would think that while biking and the elliptical are easier on your knee, they still involve a lot of knee bending.

Jodi What is with this running thing? I used your training plan for the goofy, although I didn't follow it as strictly as Cindy did, but now I hear that you are going out for 8 mile runs? That is crazy talk.

Chester I'm sorry to hear about you losing your job. That really sucks, but hopefully you will find something much better. My dad lost his job two years ago. He was really down at first and it took a while (4-6 months I think), but he ended up finding a much better job with a lot less stress and better working hours. He is now much much happier and in retrospect he is glad he got laid off from his previous job. I'm hoping that the same thing happens to you.

In the meantime, though, you might as well run and train as much as you can. Get into the best shape of your life and kick butt at Mardi Gras.

Other peeps, lurkers, new posters Post more stuff! Where are you from? What races are you looking forward to in the future? How are you training? What did you eat for dinner last night? (ok I don't really care too much about that last one, but I am going to tell you what I had for dinner)

As for me, I guess I'm marathon training for real again. I've run 40ish mile in the last week and I got a 10 miler in this morning before work. For some reason getting up at the butt crack of dawn to run 10 miles before work makes me think "ok I'm really training now".

In other news I really need to keep running more. My new hobby (now that I'm basically done with grad school) is cooking. I'm been preparing a lot of crazy elaborate dishes on the weekends from the Julia Child cookbook. The food all tastes great, but I can't count how many sticks of butter I've gone through. Last weekend I roasted a whole chicken with mushroom stuffing, this weekend I think I'm going to make French Onion soup.

Hmm, better plan on a 20 miler soon to burn off those calories.

:confused3 I sent you a message on FB.

Sounds like the making of a good series of blogs - or maybe even a film...
