My DD6 has been dancing for 3 years and LOVES going. We do a 1 hour tumbling class on Wed. afternoon, and 2 hour ballet/tap/jazz combo on Thursday night. It is $86 a month for the 3 hours. WE paid about $50 per coustume for the 4 she will need, plus a $25 recital fee. Ticets to the show are only $10 so ticekt sales do not cover the rental of the hall. I will not buy shoes from payless because the ballet shoes are too stiff. They do not allow full range of motion in the foot. I pay $17 for her Capezio daisy. I also but capezio taps b/c the payless ones are not padded enough. I pay $25 for her taps. These prices are very comprable to what you pay at payless for a much better quality shoe. You can also oreder in 3 widths. YOu can order online form lots of places and get about the same price. She has a narrow foot so she wears bolch jazz shoes. Jazz shoes are pricey anywhere you go, but I can get these online for about $35 shipped. She does best in bloch leos. I save a lot there ordering online. I can usually catch them on sale for $10 or less. Tights are usually just whatever dance tight I can get cheapest. Next year we will add lyrical and hip hop. Two more hours, two more pair of shoes, and 2 more costumes!
I think it is totally worth it when I see the enjoyment DD gets out of it. I danced in one form or another from the time I was 4 through college. My Aunt had a studio, and mom traded bookeeping work for lessons for me and my sister. I took dance courses for my PE credits in college. It is the only way we got to do it as money was really tight growing up. I loved it dearly and see the same love in her. I was not the prettiest or msot popular child so it was a real confibence buildre and outlet for me. I don't mind putting the money in it for DD b/c I am already seeing the benefit in her coordination and confidence level, plus she loves going and would be ther every day if i let her!
