I shaved my head tonight for St. Baldrick's, and am looking for advice on bald head care. I did it four years ago, but don't really remember much about it. What I found on Google was geared towards men- particularly those that are keeping it bald.

When they were shaving it, I noticed that my scalp was really dry and flaky. The barber mentioned getting some silk oil. It will be awhile before I can get to a salon, so I picked up some tea tree oil at Wal Mart since it said it was for dry scalps. Will this work? Is there another brand or product that will help?

How do you normally care for your bald head? We used clippers, not razors, so there is just the tiniest bit of fuzz. I can't remember from last time at what point I started using shampoo or if it was from the get go.

Also- does anybody have any tips for wig care? I have to wear one for my theme park job. It will be pretty hot this summer and I'm worried about it getting too nasty. It's synthetic and not an expensive one, so I'm worried about it holding up to the abuse it will probably be put through at the park.

Thanks!

Wigs.com has info on how to take care of synthetic wigs. I'm not sure if you got my response to a prior thread but if not check out sparklingearth.com for cheap head coverings.

AWESOME! DS did it this year for the 2nd time.

Initially I would use some good skin lotion or neutrogena body oil. When DS was 4 (when he shaved the first time) we used alcohool free after shave lotion since he was so itchy. He didn't need it this year, he's 7.

Could you line the wig with a material that would wick away sweat, etc that you could change every few days?

Won't your hair be grown out enough by this summer that you won't have to wear a wig? Or are you like in a costume (a la Cinderella, etc) where you need long hair?

I was thinking the same thing....wont it be a few inches long in a month or so?

I must be living under a rock. What is St. Baldrick's?

Even if she had long hair down to her waist, the Pricessess (all of them) still wear wigs for continuity.

True, but I wasn't sure what theme park she works in. Maybe things are different there.

I work in rides operation in a theme park here in the midwest. (Disney was five years ago...sadly). I was looking at pictures from the last time, and it seemed like it was a good few months before it started looking normal again. When I look at pictures from the last Harry Potter release (which was mid July and I had shaved in April), it was just fuzz. I'm not sure how long it has to be before the park will allow me to stop wearing a wig.

I never realized how hard it is to find stuff. We went looking in Columbia today (I'm visitng my parents), and there just weren't a lot of good options, even with a cancer research hospital there. Nobody seemed to have head scarves or turbans, and the few wigs we found were kind of ugly. I will look at the sparklingearth site somebody mentioned, and I'm going someplace in Oak Park tomorrow. I can order from the ACS catalogue which I did last time for my scarves, but I like to be able to try something on to see how it looks.

Here is the after picture:

Since somebody asked what St. Baldrick's is, I thought I would use a separate post to explain it.

St. Baldrick's is an organization that raises money for childhood cancer research by hosting head shaving parties. People collect donations by pledging to shave their heads. Researchers can then apply to the organization for funds. There is one researcher in Missouri (in Columbia) who is currently receiving a grant from St. Baldrick's which is paying for staffing for a clinical trial.

At the events, we strive to honor children in our communities who are going through cancer. At our event, we honored a beautiful young lady named Gloria Mengel. Gloria goes to one of the middle schools in the city in which I teach. The teachers at my school are playing a basketball game against the teachers at her school to raise money for the family. (I will be the mascot). Gloria was initially diagnosed with a germ cell tumor in the brain that came close to taking her sight. She was able to beat it, but the treatment for that gave her leukemia. We were hoping that she would be at the event, but unfortunately she was unable to make it because she was in the hospital.

This is her Caring Bridge site:

Wig care.. check with African American stores, or Judiaca stores. I know some of my coworkers (African American) use a waterless spray shampoo to care for wigs. -- Aveda makes one, but there are others. I've see the waterless spray shampoo at Wegmans, Ulta and Sephora.

I might even call your local hairdresser. They might know. I do know my local cosmetology school has the students start on wigs, so even a call to a costmetology school could tell you.
