Balcony Question at WL

Hi to all, we are booked for the WL standard view for Jan 16-22. I am starting to worry about my son. He is ADHD and sometimes a bit difficult to control. I am worried about him climbing over the balcony! Is this stupid to worry about?? Are the balconies really safe? I mean I know it is up to the parent to watch the kids, however if any of you have an ADHD child you know how fast they can move. He is 6 and pretty tall, are the balcony chairs removable into the room? Or can I call a CM to have them taken out altogether? Thanks!!

What about requesting first floor? I'm sure if you explain your circumstances, the CM will do all that they can to help out. The furniture can easily be brought into your room and the balconies are about 4ft high. Good luck!

The chairs are removable to the room, and I am sure that if you request it they will take them away. We just got back yesterday from 8 days at WL -- our balcony room (#3001) had a tall, stone "railing" (completely solid) that DS, 7, could "just" see over (top of balcony hit about level with his shoulders).

We loved this resort (have done Poly and Contemp) and I think you'll love it too, and rest assured that CMs will do all they can to help you.

I agree, jsut request a first floor room. Call WDW Special Services and they can make it happen.

Thank you all very much!! If he can just see over the top I don't think he'd try to climb it. It is so hard for me to relax when he hasn't a speck of fear in him. My daughter is just the opposite - at age 12, I'll be lucky if she'll even dare go out there on a balcony. I'll see if they can get us a first floor. Thanks again!

I agree with requesting a first floor room, the only problem is i dont think any of the first floor rooms are standard rate. I would explain it once you check it and ask if there is anyways there is anything on the first floor available and i bet they would upgrade you. Thats what we did in the august. My son is handicapped and we asked if there was anything on the first floor. they had it in our ressies already that we had a handicapped child and they automatically upgraded us from standard to courtyard without even asking. we were in from 1156. we walked out our room and we were right in front of the WLV pool. perfect. Best of Luck!

However, for a child that is ADHD a first floor room may not be a very good idea either. My son is not ADHD, he has autism, but I worry about him slipping out the door and being gone before you know it on a first floor room. Kids can be very fast you know, it is practically impossible to watch them every second. I would also be afraid of the balcony for the same reason as the OP.

I was on the 6th floor with 2 very active, autistic children (ages 5 and 3) in August. I had similar worries before our trip. One big help is that the locks on the sliding glass doors leading to the balcony/porch are high enough that a child would have to stand on something to reach them. Plus, they are those "pin" style locks that you have to twist into the correct position before you can pull them out. Most children wouldn't be able to figure that out...at least not in a few seconds time.

Once we examined the situation, we figured there would be plenty of opportunity for us to prevent my kids from opening 2 sets of drapes, then finding a chair to push against the door, then figure out the lock, then move the chair, then get on the balcony, then get another chair and push it against the balcony, then climb up on to the chair, then climb on the balcony, then jump 6 floors to a certain death. In other words, it wouldn't be easy for him to accomplish unless you were extremely careless, which I'm sure you are not. :)

Relax and enjoy your vacation!!!
