Balcony Plan at POFQ

We always enjoy the balconies during our WDW stays, especially in the evenings after we get back from the parks. I know that POFQ does not actually have balconies. But, how many folks pull their chairs out from the room and create a makeshift balcony in front of their room? I know we couldn't sit out there in our jammies and dry our hair in the evening breeze, but would it at all be acceptable to pretend we have a balcony this way?

Many people do this, therefore many people apparently find it perfectly acceptable.

I'm not one of those people.

Honestly, I find it a horribly obnoxious thing to do. The balconies are corridors, the walkways we all need to use to get from here. I just hate it when we have to squeeze past people making themselves at home on a public walkway. I find it selfish and unacceptable.

But that's just me.

I imagine if people did it with the chairs up tight against the wall/window of the room and sat sideways so my 5 year old won't trip over their out-stretched feet (and their cigarette butts), then it wouldn't be selfish or obnoxious.

But every time I've personally encountered it, it's been more like I'm interrupting their conversations and smoke-fests by "rudely" walking through their makeshift living rooms.

Sorry ... like I said, it's just one of my WDW pet peeves.:worried:

We were there May 26 to June 2. We didn't see anyone doing this although I'm positive it's done. I may have had the same uncomfortable feeling about interrupting your group.

Just a thought... we were in a room with a beautiful view of the river. We also had a stairwell right next to us. Don't know how much of a balcony it would be with people going up & down the stairs and elevators.

There are so many gorgeous, beautiful courtyards and bench areas. I can't see a reason to sit out on the walkway.

Although I hate it when people do it, I can understand it if the people have young children asleep inside the room. For those few who have this reason for not taking Happy Hour elsewhere, I still find the behavior obnoxious, but at least they are being responsible parents!

The walkways just aren't that wide, I don't think you'd find it too pleasant sitting there with groups of people walking by and sort of climbing over you. I wouldn't enjoy it.

I agree with the PP, there are lots of benches scattered around the resorts and I'd rather sit there and have a little peace and quiet.

I have to agree with you. I've encountered it at POR as well as at POP. Now, there may have been little ones in the room so the adults didn't want to leave the area. But, it does make it very inconvenient for others trying to get to their rooms. I hate passing through a social gathering when getting to my second floor room at POR.
I'm not sure what the solution is..that's a hard one. But, I guess that's why you have to pay more to get a deluxe with a private balcony. Sorry you aren't getting the answers you were hoping for.
Have to say that I have also seen people hanging out towels and wet bathing suits on the railings outside their rooms as well...now, that's tacky!

If you are on the first floor, it may not be a problem because there is so much room, especially if you are in one of the mansions facing a fountain or a courtyard.:thumbsup2

seem it alot at Pop.

always assumed there were littles one inside - so it didn't bother me. if you want a balcony - then go with deluxe or rent a reservation from a DVC member.

most of the studios have a balcony - there is one at VWL that doesn't - but everywhere else they have them.

I've seen people do this and I don't personally have a problem with it as long as the walkway isn't completely blocked. I can see how it bothers some people though because as the walker, you do kind of feel like you're interrupting the people sitting (you know, all talking stops, you look at them - they look at you until you've passed - it's kind of uncomfortable) and it is, after all, a walkway. Also, if you're in the room next door, you can hear everything going on outside.

I've stayed at POR and have a suggestion - there are benches all along the river and cobblestone streets at POFQ (which are beautiful by the way). What I liked to do at the end of the night was throw on my jammies - pair of old shorts and t-shirt so no one was the wiser, grab a glass of my favorite beverage and find myself a quiet bench along the river and hang out there for while. It was really quiet and just a peaceful and relaxing way to end the day. I was never more than a two minute walk from my room.

Have a great trip. POR/POFQ is an awesome resort! :)

Be polite and request a first floor room facing the 'river' or the gardens.
You will enjoy your view from your rooms and not interrupt or bother other guests.
Also - keep voices at a low tome - you never know who might be napping next door.
Remember - you are at a hotel, not home.

I agree with you :goodvibes. Since we usually stay deluxe this is not and issue, but when we were at Pop I saw a few people blocking the corridors with their chairs from inside the room. Seemed a bit strange to me, to each his own. Also like another post said there are benches outside at most of the resorts.

My 2 cents on this...

Don't do it.

- If you need to sit outside your room, find a resort that has private balconies or sit on one of the many benches provided throughout the resort.

- If you need to be out there because the kiddies are asleep and you can't have a conversation, find a resort this has separate living/sleeping quarters instead.

-If the resorts wanted you to sit out there, they would provide chairs in front of every room.

PS During our recent stay at POFQ, I'm not saying it wasn't happening, but I didn't see this at all.

Hey,
I guess I'm going to disagree. I really don't think it is that big of a deal!!! We are DVC members so never have this problem - however we have stayed at POFQ and I really don't think it would would bother me. If you were loud and I could hear you in my room all night - that might be another issue. But if your just haveing a glass of wine and taking in the sites - I would probally join you :rotfl2:

I have never seen anyone at POFQ do this. It may or may not be a big deal. It depends on how many people are in the party do this and how they do it. I would lean more away from doing it than on doing it. The walkways are narrow and I would feel awkward going through a party on the walkway with chairs and such.

I had neighbors doing this every night when I was at the CBR last year and let me tell you it was annoying. Every night when I got back from the parks, I had to walk over them. I'd then go into my room, take my bath and try to go to sleep. I had trouble every night because of their loud talking and carrying on. In fact three different nights, after trying over an hour to go to sleep, I called downstairs and security came to talk with them. On two of those nights, I was told that someone had already called on them and security was on its way. The morning after I called on them for the third time they were gone. I don't know if they checked out or if they were asked to leave, but they were pains in the behind. Just remember if you are sitting outside your door talking, that your neighbors can hear every word you are saying and there is a good chance that they are trying to go to sleep and won't appreciate you being out there.

My 2 cents...

If it happens don't judge. I always stay at POFQ almost every trip not because we can't afford deluxes but because POFQ is my favorite resort of all of them. Now we are a go at open stay until close or we all go to bed when we get back. We have never ever pulled our chairs out on the walk way to talk in all of our trips..... until our last one. We flew down on a Sat. and went to the parks, our 7 year old dd was fine all day well that night she threw up and was sick, needless to say we were good parents and didn't drag her into the parks sick, however she wouldn't sleep with us in the room talking and she needed to rest not to mention I needed fresh air. Now we were considerate and had our chairs back by the door in the little cut out cove by the doors so people could walk around us, but yes DH and I did sit out there and enjoy a little of the FL weather. So.. would you have rather me taken her into the parks sick or sat out on the walkways and enjoy some of my trip like that? I agree big parties our there drive me crazy but just a DH and Wife sitting there, there could be a real reason. Think I was keeping all your kids healthy by not taking mine out. (And I know many that would have drugged them up and still done the parks)

I've seen this happen on a number of occasions. I guess my feeling is if you're considerate and don't disturb other guests then there's no real reason why not. Don't have a party, and certainly do not smoke out there. It would also help if your room was away from the common walkways of course, so there aren't too many people trying to squeeze past you.

Give it a try and see how it works for you - and maybe speak to your neighbours just to make sure they don't object for any reason. You will of course have to accept that if someone wants to come past you, maybe pushing a stroller, then you will need to move as that's what the walkways are for.
