Has anyone ever had a Baker's cyst in your knee?

If so please advise what treatment or surgeries have you had done.:p

Wow...I haven't heard that term in decades! I had one removed when I was 11, which would have been in 1969! I sure hope that treatments have improved since then...I had it drained a few times but it kept filling up. I finally had it surgically removed under general anesthesia...18 stitches and 10 DAYS IN THE HOSPITAL!!! I think I missed something like a month of school. I bet it's day surgery now...I'll be anxious to hear from others with more recent experience.

I did, and had surgery to have it removed. I was a kid at the time though (1st grade), so I've no advice. Best wishes. :)

missypie -

Mine wasn't much more recent than yours ('76, I'm thinkin'). I was put under as well, and spent a few days at the hospital. I can't recall offhand how many stitches, but about the same as you. I missed a good bit of school...I received a bunch of homemade cards from my classmates. :) If I'm remembering correctly, I had to use crutches for 'bout 3 weeks or so. I recall not enjoying having my leg bandaged into a bent position for so long without being able to straighten it.

My younger sister had to deal with it twice...not sure if they did surgery the first time with her or not, but I know they eventually did. Not sure what year she had hers done, but it would have been more recent than me.

Funny you should post this today! My DS-12 was supposed to have surgery today to have his removed! LOL
He's had it for about 5 years now and they kept saying it would go away. It never did. It doesn't really bother him much, just when he fully stretches out his leg and then the hamstring pushes against it.

We got tired of waiting for it to go away so we decided to have it surgically removed. His orthopedic Dr. didn't really want to do it but we insisted. We then decided less than a week before surgery to see a pediatric surgeon. After speaking with him about it we decided to hold off on the surgery.

If he had been an adult it would have been different but with most children they do eventually go away.

The new Dr. said as long as its not interfering with day to day activities or causing any pain or tingling down his leg then its not a problem. He also said that 30% of the time they reoccur even after surgery and because he has to be on his stomach for the surgery its a little riskier because of the anestesia (sp).
We then decided to just wait some more. Heck, it had been 5 years...whats another 6 months! LOL

If you have any questions feel free to ask away!

Missypie....it's still a large incision and he would have had to spend at least one night in the hospital.

Thank for responding.

My pain is not in the back of the knee its right in front. Doctor laughs because the MRI showes a tear in one of the tendon thingys and thats how I got a baker's cyst. The tear is similar to an injury caused by playing tennis.

I have never played tennis in my life!

I think I got it getting into my truck. The truck has a step rail and as I get in I twisted my knee. OUCH pain !:headache: :headache:

Its possible then that they may be able to fix the tear thru orthascopic surgery and drain the cyst at the same time. What did he think the options were?
There really is a difference in the cysts and procedure when its an adult vs. a child.

Haven't gone back I've lived with the pain ever since!

But I can't help but wonder if neglected will they need to cut my leg off!!

I exagerated!
