Funny you should post this today! My DS-12 was supposed to have surgery today to have his removed! LOL
He's had it for about 5 years now and they kept saying it would go away. It never did. It doesn't really bother him much, just when he fully stretches out his leg and then the hamstring pushes against it.
We got tired of waiting for it to go away so we decided to have it surgically removed. His orthopedic Dr. didn't really want to do it but we insisted. We then decided less than a week before surgery to see a pediatric surgeon. After speaking with him about it we decided to hold off on the surgery.
If he had been an adult it would have been different but with most children they do eventually go away.
The new Dr. said as long as its not interfering with day to day activities or causing any pain or tingling down his leg then its not a problem. He also said that 30% of the time they reoccur even after surgery and because he has to be on his stomach for the surgery its a little riskier because of the anestesia (sp).
We then decided to just wait some more. Heck, it had been 5 years...whats another 6 months! LOL
If you have any questions feel free to ask away!
Missypie....it's still a large incision and he would have had to spend at least one night in the hospital.
