Does anyone have a list of the Bag size limit for the most popular airlines. 25",27" 30" etc. also weith limits. I know the one bag I have is too big for sure. I am still trying to figture out what I will do next year as flying or driving.

The rules vary by airline. Any bag bigger then 27" (27" is iffy) tends to be either oversized or overweight.

The easiest way to check on it yourself is to go to each airline's website. They post what they consider carryon size.

Would you really let the size of your suitcase dictate your transportation choice? Wouldn't it make more sense to just buy a new suitcase?

Nah. . .that won't work. . .

Even if your bag meets the airline's requirements, there is no guarantee that you will be able to carry it on.

If the overhead compartments are full when you board and your bag won't fit under the seat in front of you, you will have to gate check it.

Overhead space is strictly on a first come, first served based. I post this because some people seem to think the overhead compartment over their seat is reserved for people in that row. It isn't.

Seconding what CarolMN said - I remember when Song existed, there were two cabins but all one class. The front cabin - what's now been converted to First/Business Class on Delta planes - had 48 seats, but only overhead space for 27 bags (assumes three per compartment, correctly stowed wheels-in or wheels-out).

Maybe HugPug meant checked bags as she never mentioned carryons, but did ask about larger bags (27", 30" etc.). :confused3

Anything over 27 inches isn't fit for flying anymore. It will be oversize by most carriers' definition, and will most likely be over 50lbs and will thus cost far more to check.

Interesting, as I have been in the market for the new Spinner cases and I have my eye on a 29" Samsonite at Costco. The dimensions are 29x20x12 = 61" which is my airlines upper limit. So this bag still wouldn't work? :listen:

It may fit the dimensions of your current carrier, but not all carriers. And it will very easily go over 50lbs, especially if it weighs more than 10lbs empty.

Overweight luggage fees are much higher than checking a 2nd bag.

If you can make it to COSTCO today they have a Samonsite promotion, coupon needed, 3 pieces for $150. The set includes a 27", 21" and a wheeled tote. I think the set would be better if the pieces were a little smaller but basically you get one bag you check, one that fits in the bins and one that fits under the seat in front of you (as long as you put your personal item in the tote).

we have 2 of the 29" delsey helium fusion.
one weighs 13lbs empty, & is 60.5" total. (http://www.ebags.com/delsey/helium_...rolley/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=90792)

we've used them on over eight domestic flights (southwest & delta) in the past year alone, & haven't had any problems them being oversized or overweight when full (we do use a portable luggage scale when they "feel" close to 50lbs).
btw, they are well packed, but not overstuffed when we travel (by not cramming everything into smaller bags, our clothes don't get as wrinkled ~ we only use downey wrinkle release when traveling, NO ironing allowed).

hth :)

We have just run into this problem. We have two 29" bags - one of which is a very nice bag we just bought last year.:headache: I know I measured them before flying last year and they were well within the limits. This year I checked the limits again and now they are right on the edge. Frankly its too close for me to take a chance. If the gate agent measures it a bit differently than I do we will have to pay. So today after work I am shopping for 2 26" inch bags and we will proably take a smaller additional piece also. Fortunately we are on an airline that still allows 1 bag free and there are 4 of us flying so we're still within our free allowance

I sSWA allowing 2 bags still? I have a suitcase that is well within size limits and a duffle that I usually check . I think it would be too big for carryon, not to say others wouldn't try it but I try to stay within the guidelines !!

I have no reason to disagree with your experience. Many 29" bags weigh more then 13 pounds, some weigh closer to 20. The fact that your bag only weights 13 lbs gives you an advantage. Many of the posters on DIS are buying bags at places like Marshalls. They're getting older, heavier models.

Many people tend to "stuff" or "pack full" their bags. Those people are likely to be over 50 lb with any bag bigger then 27". Airlines used to allow 70 lbs.

yup-two bags-no charge- at www.southwest.com

Thank you all I now know to buy a new bag 26" to be on the safe side. I have a carryon that is fine. My problem was with the cheked bag. I have a 30" pullman and I know this won't work for any airlines. If I decide to drive then it will work perfectly. I have 10 months to see what happens with the airlines and gas prices before I make up my mine. I will be watching the air prices starting after the first of te year.

funny that I am now in the freak out mode. I just realized our bags that were within limits last year are now no longer! And we leave FRIDAY!!:scared1: nothing like last minute.

So here's hoping I can find inexpensive bags close by that are 26 inches and lightweight. Right now we have 2 bags that will work(but there are 6 of us!!:scared1: )

The most surprised passengers I've seen were the ones who have used a specific bag "dozens" of times with no problem and were then forced to check it.

Past performance is no indicator of future performance.
