BAD EXPERIENCE - Stay Past check out time at SSR?

They don't need to put a credit card on the account - if your renter doesn't, DVC can come after you for charges, damages, etc.

In a case like this, I think our contracts read that DVC will remove points (I don't have a contract handy to look at), there is no provision in the contract for charging cash. I could be wrong.

I just think rack rate would be a better plan because you may have renters, or guest. I know that my trips are planned out ahead of time and for many the points may not be there. So what do they do in that case.

Remember, DVC is always in control of your points and account. They could put a lien on your account or prevent any future stays until the account is settled. We just returned from the notary for our Quitclaim deed to decline the OKW extension. They sent us a bill, paperwork and some legalese. I took the day off to get it done.

They can pretty much do whatever they want. They are not going to make it easy to rent or help the owner out by reducing the risks. That's why they have that clause that reads owners may rent their points but at a disadvantage because they are not going to help you.

We are always responsible for our guests and renters and they will always come after us, because that is who their contract is with.

A valuable lesson has been learned....first, don't stay past your time....and secondly, many DVC members believe the hard and fast rules are the only way to go.
There are normally reasons for rules, many DVC members that have posted understand the reasons behind this rule and responded accordingly. In addition, many people are rule followers and consider it rude, inappropriate and often dishonest to bypass them. Examples would be pool crashing or lying about occupancy to bypass the DDP rules.

As an owner I would not like rack rate, because if for some reason I did not make it out in time it would be much more costly for them to take rack rate for whatever room than the cost of the points.

I understand the concern of people who rent their points, but I don't rent mine so guess I don't worry about it. If a family member did this, I would be peeved, but not the same as stranger and being stuck. Guess it goes back to the risks of renting.

With all the cast members Disney has, sometimes one will make a mistake or not quite quote the policy as it should be. Policies are in place for a reason, but you also have to be flexible from time to time....which I know they are. A valuable lesson has been learned....first, don't stay past your time....and secondly, many DVC members believe the hard and fast rules are the only way to go.

Just my 2 cents folks....but I believe that Disney will normally do the right thing for their guests.

Hey Tom,
I think it's more like we've seen (especially those who have been around for a while ;) ) the alternative to not adhering to those rules. You're absolutely right in that disney usually tries to help guest out so my feeling is, if they are playing hardball its usually because there has been an abuse
of policy.
I think MG said it earlier in the thread, unfortunately Disney suffers some times from it's own reputation. Word gets out there (look how much info is traded on the Dis) that Disney is cool with late check outs, now every one wants one. Disney some times gives upgrades, now we've got every one requesting/expecting upgrades etc, etc (don't believe me, check out the resort boards and see how many people post that they are psst because they didn't recieve an upgrade, towel animal or spectacular view).

Also remember the guest called the night before and was told no. :rolleyes1

Should be easy to do an 'either or' if they were to start using rack rate though.

Exactly ... I don't get it ... at check-in they were told maybe, but to confirm the day before check-out. When they went to confirm, they were told 'No'. That should have been the end of it, and that possibility should have always been known to them.

Agree.

Wow, what a nervy friend. She asks if she can stay late, is told no yet does it anyway? I'm glad she was charged extra points. I can't stand people who think they are so special that the rules don't apply to them.

Wow. Your friend is pretty nervy imo. Especially since she was told no. Now I could see it if there were some kind of compelling reason like the person who was injured and couldn't get checked out in time. Even then they don't make it easy but they will bend in an emergency. Back in June I fell and broke my leg and arm while in EPCOT. I had to have surgery on my leg and couldn't travel on the day we were supposed to check out. My husband had to jump through several hoops and plead for one extra night stay. It took a lot of effort on his part and more than a couple of phone calls with Disney and DVC management to get this okayed. But they did accomodate us. If they had not been able to let us stay, we would have just checked into an off site hotel. My experience is that they will work with you if there is a NEED but not just for convenience sake. Heck, all of us are inconvenienced by having to LEAVE DISNEY!

I've had a couple of late check-outs and only by an hour or two.

One was because they deactivated my keys early by mistake while I was loading the car. By the time they reactivated them it was near 11am

The other we were in the midst of loading the car (OKW)and it started to rain hard with lightning. They allowed me to wait it out and I was out of there by 12pm. Of course the bags were by the door and they could start cleaning.

Actually it is quite easy to be able to get late check out. It works like this (there are four people in this saga, one male, three women):

8:00: Up take a shower, start the coffee. Have a cup on the porch.

8:30: Wake the others and quickly pack your own bag. One gets up to shower.

9:00: Wake the others. "I'm up, I'm up!"

9:30: "C'mon you both gotta get up now, we have to be out by 11 and we have a plane to catch." "We're up, leave us alone!" Showers begin. Some packing begins.

10:00: Is everyone getting packed?" "Yes!" "Where's your sister?" "She's still in the bathroom." "Hey in there, we gotta move." "I'll be out in a minute." "How long is a minute?" "The same length of time it was a minute ago." "Don't get sassy with me now."

10:15: "How's the packing coming?" "We're almost done." "We got to hurry." "We're hurrying."

10:30: "Are you packed yet?" "Almost." "But there is nothing in your suitcase." "I'm getting it all ready." "Look! You gotta hurry." "Then get outta the room." From another room: "I gotta go downstairs." "Are you packed?" "Just about?" "Then, why are you going downstairs. You know we gotta be out of here by 11 and we have a plane to catch." "I have to ship some stuff because I can't get it into the suitcase." "What?! You have to be kidding. We have no time left. Why didn't you think of this earlier? This is ridiculous." "Shut-up and cool your buns and sit outside on the porch."

10:45: "I'm back, and see it didn't take any time at all." "We've got only 15 minutes. Is everybody almost ready?" "We're getting there."

10:50: "Is everyone ready now? We really got to rush." "I'm ready." "That's one." "Gotta put my make-up on." "You can do that in the car." "No, I won't!" From the other room: "Has anybody seen my belt?" "Did you look in the closet?" "Not there." "Did you look behind the bed?" "It's not there." "Everybody look for it." "Did you pack it?" "No, I didn't pack it?" "Have you looked?" "When did you last have it?" "I wore it last night." "Did you take it off in the park?" "Why in the world would I ever take it off in the park?" From the other room: "I found it!"

11:00: "We're all ready now." "Thank God." Make phone call. "We're ready to check-out, can you send someone up?" "No problem."

11:20: "Where the heck are they?" "How do I know?" "I'll call again." "Why don't you do that so you stop pacing." "Watch your tone of voice." Make phone call. "I called earlier is someone coming?" "We'll be right up, sir, it's been a little hectic because everyone is checking out at this time." "But we have a plane to catch." "I understand sir, we'll be up as soon as we can." "But we were supposed to be out of the room by 11." "Don't worry about that, sir, we'll be there as soon as possible."

11:40: "Where are they, we're going to miss our plane." "We got time, you always want to get there early." "But is not early this time." "Yes, it is, we still have two hours." "But that is not enough time." "Calm down, we'll make it." Knock on door. "They're here!"

11:45: Check-out

An extra 45 minutes and they told us not even to worry about it. It works every time.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

That sounds like my DH and me and our 2 DDs :rotfl:
Of course, it gets better with 4 women and one male with one bathroom (our trip to a family wedding adding a niece)

My Method:

10:45pm the night before all packed.

7am shower and dress.

8am breakfast

9am add last min items to bags

10 am call bell services

11am in the parks to say bye to Mickey

Done this with Me DW and 2DS every trip

Our scenario is to wash and pack most things the night before leaving out ony the clothes we wish to wear for the trip home and our cosmetics out. Then after breakfast and our morning showers, we throw the remainder of the things in our bags, move the bags to the rental car, call the front desk to let them know we are gone, and get out the door to meet the first bus to Animal Kingdom or Epcot (whichever we have chosen) by the time the park opens. We like to park hop on our last day, and hit all our favorites one last time before we have to head north! We are usually out of the room by 8 unless we have sluggish guests!

As an owner I would not like rack rate, because if for some reason I did not make it out in time it would be much more costly for them to take rack rate for whatever room than the cost of the points.
Yep...that's the whole point! With a lot of "ME first, last, and only" people, you have to make it painful to get compliance. A lot of those folks' response to rules is to say, "Make me."

11 points is nothing, and probably would not deter anyone. If someone plans ahead and reserves that last day so they'll have a villa during the day of a late flight, that doesn't hurt anyone. But if another owner simply decides to overstay because the worst case scenario is a few points, that hurts other owners. As we've seen repeatedly in other threads, many, many DVC owners have gotten very late checkins caused by inconsiderate guests like the person in this thread.

I don't think it necessarily has to be full rack rate, but they could institute a substantial financial penalty for self-extenders, like many hotels do for guests who smoke in non-smoking rooms. When they only charged an extra $50 for extra cleaning, they got no compliance. When they raised the penalties to $150-200, they got compliance.

Most guests comply with rules because we all realize they are established for valid reasons. But when people refuse to respect the rules, Disney needs to either enforce or eliminate the rule. And of course, Disney is notoriously reluctant to really enforce anything.

Are we the only ones who bring our own luggage down to the lobby?

We also check out on time but we always have a late flight so that we get at least another half day of Disney in. JUst drop our carry-ons at the bell services desk and off we go.

I see plenty of folks who move their own luggage around. We used to, and still do, but it depends on where we are staying. If we can 'park at the door' -- like SSR or OKW, we typically handle things ourselves. If it's a scenario like WVL or BWV/BCV, then we typically have Bell Services help us out.

Of course, in these scenarios, 'We' happens to be made up of 'Me, Myself, and I' since the other folks in my party can't really do any heavy lifting. We usually have somewhere around 10-12 items and at $1/bag each way, it seems well worth the expense to me. Er, uhm, 'Us'. :)

It's one thing to go in and out to the car a couple few times. It's another thing to go down the hall, wait for the elevator, go through the lobby, etc a couple few times. :)
