Bad Experience at Cafe New Orleans

My boyfriend and I went to DL today to celebrate my b-day a bit early (my b-day is on Sunday). We both requested time off of work and got the day off. We orginally planned to eat at Blue Bayou. However, due to the recent price increase, we decided to make reservations at Cafe New Orleans. I was excited to try it since the menu has changed and it was now a sit-down restaurant. I never expected to have such a lousy experience.....

I made reservations 2 weeks beforehand. When we checked in we were greeted by an unhappy and disgruntled hostess. Her tone of voice was a bit rude when guests asked if they were taking walk-ins or if they had other questions. After checking in, she wrote my name down on a card and asked if we would like to sit inside or outside. We told her inside since it was hot outside. She mentioned to my bf and I that the wait time would be a bit long, due to the restaurant being over-booked. We didn't think that was a big deal, so we waited patiently. We waited and watched as 6 couples were seated before us. I thought it was odd and politely asked the hostess how much longer we would have to wait. She frantically looked for the card she wrote my name on and she somehow lost it. Neither my bf or myself, had seen her give it to the CM's who were seating guests. She walked off and asked 2 other CM's if they had taken it, but they said "No." As she was walking back towards us, she rolled her eyes and started mumbling something. She then grabbed another party's card that she had filled out and handed it to one of the CM's and said: "Here. Take this and seat them. It's for them." The CM lead us to a table outside. My bf and I politely said: Oh, could we please sit inside? We told the hostess that we would like to sit inside." The CM said: "Oh, this card says outside." He then lead us to a table inside.

Okay, bad start, but hopefully the meal will be fine, right? WRONG! After our server brought us our drinks, I saw this huge piece of brownish-green spinach floating in my coke glass. My boyfriend's soda had what appeared to be cigarette ashes in it! We both looked at each other and said: "What the heck is going on???" We called our server and he looked at both glasses and just shrugged and didn't know what to say. He took both glasses and brought us new sodas.

We decided to share a monte cristo sandwich but it took 40-45 minutes to get it. At this point the restaurant was not as busy as when we first arrived (most guests had already finished eating and left). I asked our server if I could please speak to a manager. He said: "Okay," and I heard him ask a group of CM's: "Where's the manager??" A few minutes later the manager came over to our table and I explained what had happend. He apologized and said he would give us a discount and a dessert. At this point we pretty much had lost our appetites, so we just wanted to pay the check and leave. The only discount we received was -$4 for the surcharge fee of sharing a plate!

I hope that those of you who have dined there had a better experience than we did. We will not be dining there ever again.

Oh my gosh, how awful. I don't blame you, if I had that experience I wouldn't be going back again either. And what kind of a discount is that? Should have had a free meal for all those problems! We didn't plan on eating there, we usually don't eat in the park, except maybe one burger type meal, it's just too pricey. But there's another reason with a story like that!

Sorry that happened for your birthday! I hope you have a happy one on your actual day though!

Please email Disney directly and let them know of your experience. They need to know these things so they can fix them.

I agree with Mary Jo. Disney should atleast KNOW this is going on since they have always prided themselved on being "the happiest place on earth". You certainly werent treated like a "guest" that day. :confused3

Sorry your special meal was dissapointing but I hope the rest of the celebration was magical! :sunny:

I'm so sorry you had such a bad experience there. I was really looking forward to trying it out on our first trip there. I'm hoping your poor service was a result of their reopening and that further training and serving experience will ensure better experiences in the future.

Thanks for posting about your experience, this kind of thing helps us decide where we'll go when it's our turn.

I ate there on Monday and didn't have any problems. I asked the hostess about 9am for a ps for 1230 and then was seated immediately. They were very busy and I saw several management people there even helping out. I had the crab salad sandwich which was good. My ds had the cheese monte cristo which was way too much cheese. And I love cheese! so no problems here!

That really stinks that you had such a bad experience, especially when it was for your birthday. :grouphug: I agree that you should contact Disney and let them know. We ate there for the first time this past Tuesday, and everything went great.

man pixie, you should have brought Guido to run over that dang wait staff....or maybe you should have brought your swords :rotfl2: should have called me and I would have used my pixiedust: to zap em into oblivion...but seriously, Im sorry you had such a bad experience...I think you should definitely do what MaryJo said and call Disney and tell them....make sure you throw in the fact that its your birthday yeah? ;) oh and btw.... :bday: party:

Thanks everyone for the b-day wishes! :sunny: I appreciate it! :)

Mary Jo: I followed your suggestion and I spoke to the head manager in charge of the restaurant and he was really polite. He told me that he too would have lost his appetite if that were to happen to him. He also apologized for the poor experience. He said that he hopes that my boyfriend and I will want to dine there again and if we ever decide to go back, to send him an e-mail and he will take care of our bill. I told him that was very kind and thanked him. I also explained that I just wanted them to be aware so that this type of treatment does not happen to other guests. He asked me for the name of the manager I spoke to yesterday and he said he would talk to him about this.

ps...tell him to throw in some fastpasses as well :thumbsup2

YUCK! I would have been upset too! We had a nice meal there on Tuesday. I wish we had asked for an inside table, because it was too hot outside at 5 pm. I had the seafood crepes and DH had the shrimp salad. Both entrees were OK - nothing too exciting though.

Love to hear stuff like this! Thank goodness you finally felt heard. And now you get to go back for a real celebratory dinner on the mouse, which I hope you do soon. :cheer2:

Oooh, fastpasses would be nice 2..wouldn't mind having a couple of those! LOL! :lmao:

sorry to hear that your birthday experience and special dinner was so horrible. Very happy to hear that you spoke with the "big" manager and are being compensated. Nothing worse than being treated poorly!!

Just be sure you have it in writing now - just in case you can't make it back to disneyland for a while - (and that person who offered that is gone). :thumbsup2

You must go back - our experience there two weeks ago was fantastic! Please try again (and have an order of pomme frites and Mickey Beneigts for me!)

PS - happy belated b-day!

Thanks for the b-day wishes! :) The Mickey beignets sound good! I've had the beignets at the Jazz Cafe in Downtown Disney and it was absolutely heavenly!! I blame the powdered sugar! It's just too hard to resist! ;)

First :bday: party: What an awful experience. Let us know if you decide to brave it out and try it again.
