Bad Economy=More Banking or Renting out Pts?

We will still be going. We have started going out less at home and keeping costs down but we are lucky enough that the economy doesn't really effect us. We don't spend a lot but Disney is our big trip. this year we have 2 trips April for Easter and for Thanksgiving.

We are then returning in the Summer of 2010 and may squeeze a quick trip somewhere else.

I feel for all those effected by the economy luckily we have a nice little savings too and DH has a recession proof job.

If the payments weren't part of the budget each month we might reconsider. We have everything already planned out for mid-July and unless something dramatic happens with our own personal economic world we are going.

Our grown kids and their spouses are feeling the crunch big time so we're helping them with travel expenses. We're still keeping our trip next month for everyone but I suppose now we'll be banking and going less often. :sad1:

We are going! We bought this past summer and have booked a HH trip for June and a SSR trip for Christmas. We figure we've paid for it-use it! And anyway with the economy the way it is (we're in the home building business) we need to go for our health! R&R This may be the only fun we have this year!!

We are still going. My DH is a public defender in Baltimore and for his sanity (and mine) we need to get away a few times a year. We are cutting back in other areas to balance out the fact that we are still traveling.

Our plan for our June 2009 GG were pretty well set (including an AP from last August) so no change there except that we may do a sat/sun offsite instead of onsite CRO. 2010 looks like a no WDW year (probably would not have been anyway, it is our trip to Kona that may be at risk with the soft economy). Unless things really fall apart we will be back in 2011 and 2012 for another 2 visits under 1 AP set of vacations.

If you gauge things by the rental market supply/demand dynamics and the fall in the price of rented points I think you can reasonably conclude there is some pull back by DVC members on the sell side and renters on the other side

Hey bookwormde! We'll be in Kona too in 2010! Personally I'll cut back on WDW trips for 2010 if I need to watch the $$$.

jmo & no specific flaming thrown here (file it under u gotta do what u gotta do to make DVC work for u under current rules)

yesterday did read a post from a member who booked (speculatively with sole purpose to rent) 2 Xmas ressies

while they have to do what is right for them, it does bother me (just a bit) to know that those prime weeks r gone for another member to personally enjoy:confused3

wondering if this type of activity will increase moreso that offering points to rent

We are going to Vero Beach this year instead of WDW. We decided for a break from WDW this summer:scared1: after several consecutive years of going. The economy was not the only factor, but it was one of them. We just decided to take a leisurely vacation at the beach and the fact that we will not have to drop over a grand on pa$$es was a very nice plus.

We did three trips within a year with a late June 2007 trip, a Feb 2008 trip and an early June 2008 trip. We did all three trips with an AP. So like I said this year we are solely doing Vero. This could become a pattern. Do multiple WDW trips one year with AP's and a beach trip the next.

On a positive note, it give me an opportunity to plan a couple of years into the future to take friends and family (if everything stays about the same), and to have enough points for about 2 weeks in a GV. Never stayed in one before. Woo Hoo! :dancer:

Chuck, Woo Hoo is right, Now that's something to look forward to! We love the OKW Grand Villas! Luckily, we've had 4 stays (family reuinions) and staying together, for us, really adds to the experience and OKW couldn't be a better setting!

Personally, living in FLorida, our travel expenses are little so we will be vacationing the same, June 5 days at BWV and a few days at OKW in August. Dining, however, will be toned down. My company has already instagated paycuts, :sad1: so we're tightening the belt to be able to enjoy our vacation.

It looks like we will bank 3/4 of our points this year because of the economy. The economy hasn't really affected my family that much, but it has affected both of my adult daughters' families and it doesn't look like either of them are going anywhere DVC this UY.

I don't know if our family will rent in the future or just sell one of our contracts. We have to look at the prospect of a prolonged recession, the ages of our kids, and wonder whether paying all those dues for years when we don't use DVC really makes sense.

We could sell our larger contract (70+% of our account), have each family go every third year and still live normal, happy, and productive lives.

We'll see how things go, but for now it looks like a big banking year.

We only own enough points for every other year - and 2009 was not supposed to be our travel year anyway. Hoping that by 2010 the economy will have picked up - though it hasn't really hit us too hard - we won't get bonuses this year I'm sure, but there is still enough money around that we can travel if we put a priority on it.

We are headed to Disney THREE TIMES this year

We are already planning our Summer trip for next year.

We are hoping that everyone else cancels or doesn't go this year so we can have the parks to ourselves :rolleyes1

Thank you DVC AP renewal rates, and discounts!!!

We love our DVC!!

We have 2 trips planned this year. One for a week (2 bedroom SSR), and one in Sept 4 nights WDW (2 bedroom Kidani), and a 3 night cruise to follow. I am also looking to add another trip in Oct.

We are only going once this year instead of twice. I wanted to go in August for graduation and DH agreed so we are doing that and invited our friends to join us. The plan was to add on so that we could go twice and still have enough points to take DH's family next year, but that isn't going to work out right now. At least we're still going once a year! :cool1:

I completely understand your feelings. Always felt that way myself until recently with my job problems. I came very close to doing it myself (specifically Christmas and New Years). I ended up not doing anything, but will likely transfer some fortunate person points in the near future.

Things are bad out there... people are robbing people because they don't feel they have any choice. My son was recently robbed at gunpoint while delivering pizza. It's bad.

I don't like it, but if someone needs to sell a "spec" vacation to pay the mortgage or buy groceries, then I completely understand.

Of course, who knows what the situation was with the person you reference.

No flames...:goodvibes Just my perspective....

We are also going. We had already planned on going to SSR for DHs birthday in September. Then, I found out that I have to go to a conference at the Contemporary the week before that. We decided to go and enjoy a long weekend at BLT. We would have never considered that before with another trip planned. That was one of the things that appealed to us about DVC, the ability to take a long weekend here and there since DH has limited vacation time. We consider ourselves fortunate and blessed to be in this situation.

We are going to both Hilton head and WDW this summer.

The big difference is we will only go into the parks for 2 or 3 days of our 8 day trip, and will eat most of our meals in the villa. So more of a resort vacation rather than a Theme Park vacation.

We are not buying any WDW tickets this year, or next, just using up all the onesies we have, and left over plus options from various tickets.

Over New Year we had a splurge vacation (lots of dining) but I had already banked the remainder of my points. Wasn't planning another trip but since we did not use 1 day of our 4 day park hopper we are going back when school lets out in June. Taking DD and one of her friends. We plan to do one day in the parks, a water park day and a relax at the pool day. Low key with not much dining. We will see what the year brings.
