My sweet DD, 2 may have an intestinal bacterial infection. We won't know for sure until we get the test results back. She has had diarrhea for several days and now has really bad diaper rash.
She just cries so much when I change her that I want to cry. I put everything I have on it, aquaphor, desitin, maalox, anti-fungal cream. Nothing seems to help.

She was on antibiotics for a week for a double ear infection and had diarrhea the whole time. It stopped for 2 days and started again. It is probably c dif. Has anyone else's child had this after antibiotics? They will give her ATB's once they know for sure, but not until then.

I am trying everything to control the diarrhea. So far, she is not dehydrated.

Please help, if you can.

Poor kid (and mom too). When my kids had a bad diaper rash I put them in the tub with Aveeno oatmeal. Then I let them run free range (unclothed in the tiled bathroom until they were dry, I didn't blot them on the diaper area at all. I laid out a bunch of towels and put washable toys and books in there. We stayed in there and played. I used the time to scrub out the tub, wipe down woodwork and cleanout the bathroom area. It seemed to really help the rash. Good luck to you

Sorry about your DD. I don't have any experience with those antibiotics, but a warm oatmeal bath may help with the rash. I think Aveeno sells one.

My mom also had a "home remedy" for diaper rash that worked for me....she used Crisco. I'm not necessarily recommending it, because it sounds strange I know, but I can tell you the one time that DD had a rash bad enough that nothing else got rid of it - Crisco did.

You can try Pedialyte for the diarrhea...that may help. A book I have also suggests Jell-O water (jello made with twice the amount of water indicated on the directions). Because of the bacterial infection though, you'd better check with her ped before introducing anything new to her system.

I hope she feels better soon!

Try Bag Balm, that stuff is amazing. It's what I use when my youngest gets a rash. It's an ointment in a little green tin. I found it at Wal-Mart in their pet section. I know our local small town pharmacy carries it also, but it's cheaper at Wal-Mart.

ouch poor baby!! :(

I think its pretty common after anitbiotics though to get a diaper rash ( or a yeast infection)

I agree with the oatmeal bath that is very soothing, but I also know when dd had diaper rash so bad that she hated the thought of even getting into the tub!

Bag Balm works wonders too.

Good luck! Ill keep your little one ( and you!) in my prayers!

DS had a nasty diaper rash after a round of anitbiotics and desitin, etc. didn't seem to take care of it. I called our dr. and he said is sounded like a yeast infection. Apparently these really bad diaper rashes can have yeast problems. He prescribed an ointment for treating the infection and it took a few days but then he was back to normal in the diaper area.

I might also try the Pedilyte. It won't cure the diarrhea but is is supposed to help keep them hydrated. It comes in several flavors so hopefully you could find one she would like.

Good luck. It is so hard when our little ones are hurting.

Dr. Smith's diaper creme is excellent. Ask your pharmacist because they usually keep it behind the counter.

Yes, my 3 year old just got a HORRIBLE case of diaper rash after being on the antibiotic Augmentin. I think he has maybe had a slight rash once or twice..

He's been off the meds for two weeks and there is still a hint of it, but the Aveeno cream helps. I also kept his diaper off quite a bit, as he is sort of coming along with the potty training...he knows not to poop on the floor anyway, lol.

My older son once had a rash that would NOT go away, and it turned out to be some sort of yeast infection that the doctor prescribed a special cream for.

I haven't tried the Crisco, but have heard from girlfriends it works.

Try keeping the baby out of a diaper as much as you can and a cloth pad under her...(in the high chair, while sitting watching TV, sleeping etc). I know it sounds like a recipe for disaster, but it worked with mine when they were little. That trapped moisture combined with the acidic diarrhea makes for a killer rash.

I agree that it could be a yeast infection, if so no diaper rash ointment will get rid of it.

Good luck, poor kid!!!

Get the stuff they use for athetes foot..I know gross, but it really works on yeast and it sounds like thats what she has going on. also...leave off the diapers as much as possible..kind of difficult with loose stools though.

I would go with the anti fungal cream. It probably is a yeast rash and it will take a couple of days of consistent treatment to kick in.

In the meantime, I find baking soda baths to be a huge help for them and then as many have said, as much naked time as you can get. Try and keep her occupied in an uncarpetted area as much as possible or sit on a crib mattress pad and watch a show or something.

good luck. Poor baby!! It just makes your heart break!

Thanks everyone. I am just so upset.

It is too hard to leave her undiapperd with the diarrhea. I was thinking of grinding up some oatmeal to put in her bath tonight.

I have been giving her pedialyte. She won't drink it straight, but she will drink it mixed with other juice. I am also giving her yogurt.

I will have to try some bag balm. I will try putting the anti-fungal with every diaper to see what happens.

Don't use baby wipes, it will make it much worse and hurts horribly. Also, know this is going to sound weird but use your hair dryer on her hiney after cleaning her up, low setting and low heat.

Poor baby. :(

Edited to add - try not to give her juice. The juice will make the diarrhea worse. Try possibly Gatorade.

It's probably a yeast infection- antibiotics do the same thing to babies they do to us! I would call the pediatrician- if it's yeast he/she will prescribe something for you!

Go to the pharmacy and ask for Lactinex. It won't help with the diaper rash, but it sure helps with the runny stools. When you take antibiotics it kills the bad stuff, but can also kill good bacteria. That causes the runs. This stuff puts it back. You can get powder or pills (that it's fine to crush up). You have to keep the pills in the refrigerator, but I promise it helps. My kids used to be on medicine constantly and I could have never made it without this stuff. DS used to get it so bad that his bottom would bleed before they told me about Lactinex. :( When my kids were little I gave them 1/2 a packet a couple of times a day. It absolutely won't hurt her.

You've named most of the cures I know of. I did like butt paste when my kids were little, but sounds like this may be yeast, so I'd go with other's suggestions.

I used to..

1. Oatmeal bath with Aveeno
2. After bath, apply hydrocortizone cream for the pain.
3. Apply a layer of Lotrimine. (anti-fungal cream found in the foot section of the grocery store.)

It helped so much..

Hope it does for you as well

My kids don't have the diarrhea problems after taking antibiotics, but my DH does!! Yogurt is great for that problem (DH east LOTS of it in that situation), it will replace the bacteria in her intestines that get wiped out by the antibiotics.
My DD1 had some BAD diarrhea when she was around 6 months and she got TERRIBLE diaper rash. Just raw from all the wiping I'm sure. Maybe your DD has a combo diaper rash/yeast infection. (Rash from the diarrhea, yeast from the antibiotics). I'd talk to her ped and see if he can prescribe something a little stronger to help with the rash.
Good luck!!!
