I was in a car accident on Sept. 13. I went to the doctor on the 20th. He said I have a strained back and it will take about 4 weeks or so to get better. He advised me to take it easy and not ride any bumpy/jerky rides until the last 3 days of our trip. We are leaving for WDW this weekend. This will be our first time going to WDW. I'm a little concerned about this trip and how miserable I might be with all of the walking. Any advice from anyone I would really appreciate it.

You may want to keep in the back of your mind that you can always call one of the services down there and rent one of those "scooters", if the walking becomes to much for you......On our last trip, my dad, who had fusion surgery on his lower back about 6 months prior to the trip, rented a scooter (ECV) just so that he wouldn't be in too much pain.......or to slow down my wife and mother in their Commando mode...............

Worked out awesome.......dad got around just as quick as the rest of us...........and burdened us with minimal complaining..........

You can find the numbers on the DISabilities forum on this site....one of the companies is Walker (I forget the others that they recommend).....

With regard to the rides......my dad just "picked and chose" his rides................I'd be careful about that..............

Best of luck and don't try to be a hero.........

We are facing this same issue over Thanksgiving. My step-mom and dad are going to be at their condo in Pompano Beach so they want to get together with us while we are at WDW. But my step-mom has had some serious issues with her back. She has started seeing some new doctor who wants to start her testing all over again. So, we aren't too sure what her status will be. But, we thought we could get her a wheelchair for the day or so that they are with us. Is this doable? I think we would most likely be going to Epcot since we'll be at BWV and it would be easier to get her there rather than MK and deal with the buses.

I strained my back 3 weeks before our last trip. I rented an ECV from Walker mobility and it worked out great! I didn't get so sore that I couldn't enjoy the trip. It does give you a different perspective of Disney! The disabilities forum advised me to rent from off site as they are 3 wheeled scooters which are easier to manuveur than the WDW ones. Also, you don't have to worry if there will be any availible when you get to the park and you have one to get around the resort and Downtown Disney.

I forgot to mention that you could rent a wheelchair and/or ECV on a daily basis from the park that you are at on that day, the only problem is that they are limited and available on a first come first served basis.............meaning, if you decide mid day that you need 'a ride', there may not be anything available..........

If an ECV or wheelchair becomes necessary, I'd call one of the services listed in the DIS abiilties section, to be on the safe side...this way, you have your own to use......it costs, but, you gotta do what you gotta do, right???? I think it cost us $240 for the week.............

We found out (with my dad) that it is easier than you might think to get around WDW with an ECV/Wheelchair........the cast members know what they are doing....and are very accomodating...........
