Bacteria Warning in Aulani Lagoon

Not likely
seems unlikely as the spill was closest to th marriott lagoon. The lagoons in front of marriott and lagoon 2 are not affected. The only lagoon affected is the farthest from the sewage spill.

Good point-wonder why this is happening, anyone know?

The lagoon was closed for two days one of our trips. It was a disappointment. Our closure was due to a sewer leak the day prior. There seem to be lots of sewer leaks in the area.

I suspect it's over crowded and ....too few diapers on little kids. And because of the shape of the lagoon, the water has a hard time moving around freely.

Was the neighboring cove (#2...no pun intended) closed also?

In our case it was only the Aulani lagoon. It is a pain to walk to the next lagoon and it makes it much more difficult to go between the ocean and the pools.

The signs have allegedly been removed and the lagoon has reopened.

Is this a common occurrence at Aulani? We leave on Friday for our first trip to Hawaii and it never even crossed my mind that there was a possibility we couldn't swim in the ocean.

the problem is that Aulani is at a man made lagoon. So they've restricted the actual "open ocean". It seems like it has been happening more and more. I've been swimming at aulani before. It's never felt like "ocean" to me.

Now it makes sense, thank you! I didn't realize it was man made. They are going to have to figure something out, then, so guests aren't swimming in sewage long term. It seems great for kids as it looks so calm, but I can see the downside, where there isn't enough water circulation and ebb and flow to keep the area clean.

Hawaii issues brown water warnings for the ocean and rivers often after a long hard rain. The surface water that has picked up contaminants has to go somewhere and that somewhere is often popular beaches.

This is the sign used in April of 2013 when the bay was closed during one of our trips. It remained closed for two days.

This is distressing but understandable.

This is half of the problem. The other contributor is inadequate storm and sewage processing plant protections. The State rolls the dice with heavy rain and continues to have problems meeting EPA standards because of inadequate investment in infrastructure.

I'm here now. Aulani has their beach open but The Four Season's looks closed. Not one umbrella is up or any beach chairs being used.

Wow. This is terrible. This thought never occurred to me. I'm hoping my July stay has less rain and maybe this doesn't occur. I can't even imagine the pool chair situation if the beach is not usable.
