Which would you recommend for our family (me, wife, dd11, dd6)? We have been to Disney many times but haven't done either show.

Anything you could tell us about your experiences at either would be great.

Thanks!

I can't comment on the BYBQ, but we did HDD and loved it! So much fun- the show was corny but my kids thought it was hiarious (and so did the grown ups!!;))
The food was very good- and all you can drink draft beer and sangria. Even better!!! That might have helped make the corny jokes a bit more funny...j/k.

The only negative I can say is I did feel the meal part was a bit rushed- since the show only lasts for so long, they have to bring you all the courses and get you finished before the end. At a normal meal, if you wanted to linger at your table for a bit longer to enjoy desert or coffee you can do so- at HDD it was sort of like "you don't have to go home, folks...but you can't stay here!"

Having said that- we really enjoyed the show and meal and highly recommend it. (I have heard some not so good reviews of Mickey's BYBQ- rude people pushing and shoving on dance floor, kids running around wild...but I can't comment on it personally since I have not been. I'm sure if you do a search here you'll find some reviews to get a better idea...)
Have fun!!

Gone to HDDR 4 times and never to the BBQ so I would they the Hoop-Dee-Doo

We've never had any interest in the BBQ, but we do HDDR almost every trip and we really love it! You can see those BBQ characters at many other places in WDW, but HDDR is really uniquely special! Plus your kids, especially the 11 year old, MIGHT feel a little on the older side vs. the other kids at the BBQ? I think they are the perfect ages for HDDR (well, for the sake of full disclosure, I think ANY age is perfect for HDDR ;))!

I havnt done the Backyard BBQ but we just did the Hoop dee doo last week and thought it was awful. Both my kids DS8 and DS2 were bored to death and didnt think anything about it was funny. It was like 2 hours of torture for us. Just our opinion though..alot of people apparently like it. The food was so so..not brilliant, the chicken was ok but the ribs were bad..the meat didnt fall off the bone like it should and the show was awful. Lame actors, lame script, bad dancing and acting, practically no audience interaction and as I said before for us it was boring and not funny. My kid was either begging me to leave or asking me to explain what were they talking about. I noticed other people not laughing also so it didnt make me feel so bad. I have written a review of it on the Dining review board.
Good Luck with your choice:)

We are doing the HDDR for the 5th time this year it is brilliant. We did the BBQ once and thought it a waste of money..

We have done both. My family really enjoyed the HDDR. We went to Mickey's BBQ when my kids were 9, 5 and 3 - my 3 year old loved it but my 9 and 5 year old boys spent more time looking at the souvenir wagon. They are timid boys and there was no way they were going up to dance. The dance floor was more like a mosh pit than a Disney experience. In the end my daughter got to dance with Minnie and then had a meltdown so we left. The August day we went was very hot. The best thing was the ice cold beer!

Given the ages of your children I would highly recommend HDDR.

We have done both shows...we are doing the HDDR for the third time this sept. We have only done the BBQ once...we enjoyed it but it was outdoors and hot! My DD would not dance but my son who was 4 had a blast dancing at the BBQ. Also the food there was typical BBQ food, hot dogs hamburgers.etc....We had the experience but probably wouldn't go again. The HDDR is a must do everytime we go...it's one of our favorites!!! Good luck deciding!!

Another vote for the HDDMR. We've done it twice now and just LOVE it. I just took my 3 month old there and she even sat through it!

The servers are wonderful and the food is pretty good too.:goodvibes

I've done HDDR as a kid and remembered liking it. I had reservations for it for our upcoming June trip, but decided to cancel them and go with BYBBQ, just bc i don't think my kids 2, 4 and 5 will enjoy HDDR as much.... another place they have to sit and watch and probably won't get the "jokes" and it will be loud. THinking that BYBBQ might be better just bc they can get up and hopefully blow off some energy and aren't expected to sit and enjoy a show.... we'll see. Next time we go when they are older, we will do HDDR.

HDDMR is awesome!!! We make a point to go EVERY trip, wouldn't miss it or the fabulous fried chicken mmmmm... :cool1:

Did both BBQ and HDDR in the same trip with 20mos old and 4 year old, hubby & myself and the grandparents. By FAR we all enjoyed HDDR more than the BBQ. Food is equivalent at both places. HDDR is inside and air conditioned where BBQ is outside and HOT. HDDR is organized with set seating whereas BBQ is a free-for-all and a mad-dash to get a decent seat. Literally pick up your kids and run for a table. The entertainment at HDDR was slap-stick humor but even young kids found it to be funny. BBQ has a few characters that they can dance with and see but you need a fairly aggressive child to get near the characters b/c there is NO order on the dance floor. My 4 year old was very frustrated b/c she would wait her turn and was constantly nudged by older more aggressive kids. Overall, they were both good, but we are booked to see HDDR again in November -- can't wait!!!

I think I'd be inclined to HDDR. The BBQ was lots of fun, but I think our DS, age 6, was almost too old and self-conscious to get up and dance. (The boys did love the lasso guy at the BBQ). They laughed their heads off at HDDR -two years in a row.

Thanks for all the posts. We are leaning toward the HDDR right now, but would like a few more comments from people who have done both before making our final decision. Anyone else out there want to give their opinion?

Thanks again to all of you who have posted!

We have done both and hands down the HDDR wins. The food is wonderful and we had a great crowd that made the jokes even funnier. My DS6 kept saying he didn't want to go and thought he would be bored, but he ended up loving it and says it was his favorite part of the trip. BYBBQ was horrible. The food wasn't that great and there was no way to get anywhere near the characters. I agree with the PP that said it was more of a mosh pit than anything else. My DD5 was pushed out of the way by an older unsupervised boy and ended up scraping her knee and needed several bandaids to stop the bleeding. We will not be back, because it was so unorganized and chaotic.
