I have been trying to read through all the sticky posts about US and IOA and I have seen ppl mention you cannot take backpacks on the rides at either park. You can take a fanny pack. And that there are lockers for your backpacks. Are the lockers at every ride and do they cost money? From the way some ppl have mentioned lockers it sounds like it may be a pain in the butt to use the lockers?

Yes alot of the rides in both parks will not allow backpacks and I have never really had any problems using the lockers and if you do they have TM's that can help you and if a ride requires you to use a locker they are free to use during your ride but you have to retrive your stuff after the ride cause if you leave it in there way after the ride you will be charged

Does the ride unload right by where the lockers are or do you have to pass by the lockers when you get off the ride?

It's been several years, but as I recall it was really only a minor pain in the neck:

1) As I recall, the lockers work by fingerprint. So if Dad is the one who puts the stuff in the locker, Dad has to be the one to get the stuff out of the locker. Dad can't take junior to the restroom and send Mom to retrieve the stuff from the locker.

2) Since you don't get a key, you have to remember your locker number. I take a pen and some paper so that I can write down the locker number on a small piece of paper and put it in my pocket.

There are lockers at the front of the park, where you pay and can go in and out of the locker all day. Useful if you have something heavy that you don't need to carry around (suntan lotion, poncho, spare clothes). If you are not allowed to take stuff on a ride, then there are free lockers near that ride. They might not be right next to that ride if there are several rides near each other which all require you to use a locker.

I've never had a problem with lockers and I actually like the set-up universal has. I also don't go at peak times though so I get in and out of the ride with plenty of time to spare. Use your knuckle instead of your finger when pushing buttons. If the scanner does an "error" or "corrupt" whatever it says wipe it with your shirt real quick and try again. I usually just type the number in my phone if I don think I will remember.

Fanny packs are the only bags allowed. and they arent even allowed if they are two big. If you have questions there is always an attendant at the beginning of the line checking for bags. It just has to be small enough to not bother the restraints so small enough to scoot to the side of your hip.

if you are staying offsite, i can see why you will be bringing in a backpack.

the best option is to use the lockers at the front of the park.
it does cost but is valid for the entire day.

it will hold a lot...

it might be easier to go back to the locker for items you need rather than carry it all with you during the day in the backpack. you might not need everything in the pack all the time during the day.

i'm thinking along the lines of carrying a camera, change of clothes after wet rides, food snacks, soda/water bottles, shoes, sunscreen, hats, etc.

What about a camera hanging around your neck? Do they make you get rid of those too in a locker?

The only rides that require a locker are..

Men in Black
Revenge of the Mummy
Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit
Hulk
Dragon Challenge
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey

The lockers are super easy to use. All it take is your finger print. No need to remember your locker number, just hit the forget locker number button and place your finger on the pad.

I think I will get myself a much smaller camera that I can also put in my bra before getting on rides. That's a good idea. My camera is way to big for that but I can get a little 80 dollar digital small version and use that.

I think I am going to take my backpack in with me since the rides that require you locker your bags is kind of limited.

I can't go all day without water and I am not sure how much it costs once you get there but it is probably 3 dollars per bottle at least, and there's 5 of us. Spending $15 every time we get thirsty is not something I want to do.

Also my husband snacks a lot. He is very into fitness and working out and he has it in his mind that he needs to consume calories every 2 to 3 hours. SO I have to be able to take healthy snacks in for him.

Thanks for all your answers you all helped me decide what to do.

take an empty water bottle with you and have one of the tm's working at cs fill it up with water for you.

you can get cups of free ice water all over in the park but since you are big on water, take an empty water bottle

same for the others in your group.

Are the lockers located outside the ride before you get in line?

I was prepared not take a bag to UO or IOA, but the more I think about it, we will want to carry poncho's, sun screen, camera, possible souvineer cups, and wands:wizard:

I'm taking 4 teens, so I sure I will also end up with 5 phones to carry or store during rides too!

I'm thinking about getting a filtered water bottle to fill up at water fountains and restrooms. I too am concerned about having to carry a bag or backpack around all day. Is that what most people do? Can you take backpacks on the other rides at AK, MK, etc.?

You are new to posting I see and I asked the same question you did about backpacks at Disney parks and YES you can take backpacks on Disney rides. You just take it off and put it in the floor and put your leg through the strap is what I was told you do with them.
