Hi Everybody,
We are considering bringing backpacks into Disney so we can carry some essentials while we're at the parks. Is this a good idea - I have heard that you can't take backpacks on some rides...true? Or , is it better to carry stuff (snacks, gameboys, etc.) in a fannypacks? What is the best way to carry stuff outside of bringing a purse.

Thanks in advance!

Backpacks are fine. We normally take one with us.

Some thoughts to consider though:

You will need to have the contents checked at the bag-check at the entrance to each park. I have seen some people carry see-through backpacks. If you have smaller, loose items, consider putting them in a clear plastic bag that you can lift out to speed the process.

We have a smaller sized backpack that we carry. About 1/2 the size of what my kids use for their college books. It is big enough to carry a couple sweatshirts and misc items, but not so big that it becomes cumbersome when you are part of a crowd. It is also of a convenient size to put in the net bag provided on some of the rides.

If you have a uni-sex color, you might even get your DH to carry it.

A small backpack works out great for us. Big enough for my camera, a snack, wallet and poncho. I actually bought it at WDW and love it. Just carry the bare minimum because days do tend to get long. We had a stroller to throw stuff in last trip but this next trip I won't. Of course I won't be carrying baby stuff either.

JMO, but why people want to bring in gameboys and mp3s...boggles my mind when there is so much to do, see and soak in.

We have always brought a backpack. It lets us bring sweatshirts, a bottle for water, first aid stuff, camera stuff and anything else we think we might need while we are there.

My fiance is always great about carrying it too- I let him pick it out so that I wouldn't have to!

Hey,

You will have to get your bag checked at the "Baggage Check" kiosk. I had to show them my little small purse. So I'd be ready to show them what you have in your bag.

awesome. Thanks everybody. One more question - can you take backpacks on the rides if the bag is relatively small (e.g., a junior size that my 2nd grader uses)?

Thanks again...

You can take it on all of the rides that I can think of. The rougher rides have net bags for your carry-ons.

Beware of Kali River Rapids though ... it's been a while since I've been on it, but remember there being a covered center section for bags - not sure how big it was though.

The roller-coaster type rides, you just wrap the strap around your leg and put it as securely as you can at your feet.

I took my backpack on all the rides (however didn't do some of the bigger rides ... TOT etc.) I did take it on Space Mountain etc. and it was fine. Mine is about the same size or a little larger as the jr. size and it worked great. I carried epipens :), wet wipes, tissues, band-aids, purell, sunglasses, glow sticks, fruit snacks, gum, water, autograph books and lots of other stuff at times (extra clothes, extra desserts, snacks, drinks etc.).
It was great and well worth it. It didn't take too long for them to check through it, actually. I had to open all of the zipper pockets, but then they just kinda glanced in each one. Didn't add more than a minute or so, 'cause you have to wait in the bag check line for even a purse or fanny pack:)

I have taken a vinyl, clear, see through backpack my last two trips and it has worked out great. Security just picks it up so they can see all sides and then I am through the line. I noticed my last trip a couple of weeks ago that they are requiring you to take off fanny packs to inspect them now.

I just - and I mean just - ordered this bag:http://www.ebags.com/baggallini/mes..._nylon/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=18644

I ordered it in black, in the hopes that I can con DH into carrying it too.

I had to have something that had a little bit of width to it, to handle my sunglasses case. I have some flexible Maui Jims that have to go into a hard case. They can be a pain because they have no hinges, but I love them.

Funny thing is, when I read some reviews, there were several who bought it for a WDW trip and loved it! :sunny:

I also noticed they won't touch any food, you have to pick it all up for them. I was behind a guy with a large cooler and the security guard asked the guest to move all their food so he could see under it. Took some time. Mostly the security line goes quickly. Be unzipped/opened for them. They were always nice to us and started our day off magically ;)

We have taken a back pack on all the majority of the rides. I know for sure Thunder Mountain, Space Mountain, TOT and RnR. I think we had friends hold it for Mission: Space. I cannot remember what we did on Kali River Rapids. Hope this helps.

On Kali, there's a covered center area. I've taken a backpack on every trip I've taken (and it's a lot of trips!). And it's gone on every attraction with me, but I haven't done Mission Space, so I don't know about that one.

You can take your bag on all the rides at Disney. Mission: Space has a little storage section in front of your seat where you could store an average-size, not overstuffed, backpack.

There are a few rides at Universal that require you to store your bag in a locker (a pain in the buttinski, but free) outside the ride. If you're going there and want to know which rides (I know the Hulk was one of them), check the Universal section on this board - they'll probably know which ones.

Have a great trip!
