Backpacks and rides, do they mix?

We are heading back to WDW this December. I've always been in June and carried a fannypack with a water bottle holder. This has always worked very well for me. I'm planning ahead for cooler weather in December and know that we'll need to take gloves and jackets. I bought a small sport bag that I can carry on my back. My question is this: What do you do with a backpack when you're on a ride. The fannypack was never a problem because I just wore it on my waist on the rides, but I'm not sure what to do if I have a small backpack.

When my son was a tot I used a back pack and had no problems. Any attraction that doesn't allow you to take the backpack onboard (such as Mummy at USF, Hulk and Dueling Dragons at IoA) will have free lockers you can use for the duration of your ride.

Most attractions are fine with a backpack. They generally have a place to stow them (such as on Expedition Everest, Soarin', Star Tours) or you can just place them at your feet or on the seat.

I always take a backpack with me in the parks. I simply either put it in my lap (like on ITSM or CoP), on the floor (Mickey's Philharmagic, other shows) or on the floor with my leg through one of the loops so it doesn't go flying off (RnRC, ToT, EE). It's a great place to stash little snacks or souveniors.

I've never had a problem with mine- there's usually room in your feet or your lap. Some rides like Soarin have the holding area for them.

Thanks, I feel much better now that I know I can be prepared. I'm a planner and I don't like the unexpected.

I've never had a problem carrying a backpack, and I do usually have it near my feet on rides. However, I highly recommend the lockers for coats, gloves, etc. It's SO much easier than lugging everything around!

I agree!!

We just got back on Thanksgiving day. There was a cool wave in Orlando where the lows got down to low 40s!!! There was also some snow flurries north of Orlando on Tues/Wed before Thanksgiving!!!

Anyway, my DH and DD each had a backpack. They stored them at their feet -- and many rides did have stow areas.

I also wanted to give you a tip about how we handled the cool weather.

My kids are 15 & 11. We all started out with several layers on: short sleeve shirt, long sleeve shirt and/or sweatshirt, and a jacket. Then as the day progressed, we took off the outer layer as needed. But instead of putting it in the backpack, we each tied it around our waists. That way mom and dad didn't have to haul around 20 pounds of clothes!!!! And when they felt they needed it again, it was at their fingertips!

We've gone twice in February and once before in November, and we've done that pretty much everytime!

I appreciate your tips. My kids are 7 and 9. If I can get them to carry their jackets around their waists I surely will. I will pack layers for everyone. I'm still hoping we'll luck out and have beautiful warm weather, but I know I'd better be prepared for anything.

This is what we always to as well. Haven't ever had a problem with it.

I didn't have any problems with a back pack last may. Just a tip- I did bring a plastic grocery bag to put it in on Splash. It was easy to carry and then throw out after the ride, and it kept everything dry.
