Backing up iPhone pics

I am really struggling to figure this out.

Normally I back up my iPhone pics to my computer but it's such a laborious project (backup to iPhoto and then export to computer and half the time it doesn't get them all) and now I'm running out of space on my HD. I have an EHDD and it's running out of space too!

On my iPhone I have the Google Photos app and have been backing up there. But when I delete from my iPhone they delete from there, which I didn't think was supposed to happen. So I lost a bunch of videos and pics somehow.

What do you do to backup your pics? I want to be able to access them and not just store them. I am willing to try an online service -- especially one that I can access from my iPhone or computer. I am willing to pay too.

Do you have Amazon Prime? Photo storage is unlimited for Prime Members. You can set the app to auto back up your phone pics. I also have Dropbox that does the same thing. Dropbox has tiers of storage you can buy. I started out with the free storage and "collected" more storage through the various incentives. That worked for some time but I started running out so went ahead and bought the terabyte for $99 a year. Of the two I find Dropbox the most user friendly and fairly simple to access my photos. Amazon drives me crazy but it comes with my membership so I take advantage of the storage. (I store ALL my photos there, we're talking well over 10,000) iTunes has Cloud Drive but the length of time it takes just to back up my phone w/no pics to iCloud for me it's not worth the price. Whatever you do, back up to at least two different places.

I just use Apple's iCloud Photos. Storage is cheap, 99 cents a month covers all my photos with plenty of room to spare. It all happens automatically and I can see my photos on my Mac laptop, my phone, my iPad and my two PCs.

How big is your external hard drive? Storage is relatively cheap these days. I have two 1TB drives I back up to. I use a program called Carbon Copy Cloner to back up.

I do it manually. I get backups via iTunes, although if I delete a photo on the phone that's reflected in the next backup. It's not really accessible either.

I manually backup on a Mac. I pull up the "Image Capture" program, select the phone as the device, and copy any unarchived photos and videos into an archive directory. If I need the photos I can pull up the directory easily. This is rather Mac specific though. There might be some other program that does something similar for Windows or Linux.

If you're running out of space, just get a new hard drive. Portable drives are cheap and convenient.

I actually have prime and tried the storage but for some reason I didn't like it. Mayne the interface was confusing? I'll look at it again.

I don't mind backing up every night as I sleep, but I have about 3k pics and videos that will need to get backed up to start.

Thanks for the advice!

I will look into that. Thanks so much!!

I have a 500G EHDD but its already full. And my 200G Mac HDD is full too so at this point I can't even back up to my computer to get them to the HDD. I haven't tried to back up straight to a EHDD. I'm sure it can be done? I'd rather back up online so I can access easier but at this point I just need to free up space. I never thought I would use 64G of space on my iPhone but somehow I've used that much and more! :headache:

Honestly, I hate their interface. Their file system sucks, their facial recognition sucks (my sister and DD's BFF who look nothing alike show as the same person and you can't change it) everything is grouped by when it's uploaded, trying to find what you're looking for is a PITA but-it's "free," I have thousands upon thousands of pics on there. They're hard to sort through but at least I know they're somewhat safe if something should happen to my EHD/Phone/PC.

Thanks!!!!

I do have a Mac and will try this app. I've always used iPhoto and dislike it. Maybe this is easier!

Shutterfly is also an option. Just put the app on your phone and upload.

Great idea!!

I use Google photos and it doesn't delete from google when I delete from my iphone.

See, IDK why it's doing it from mine. But I looked back recently in Google Photos and some of my videos are gone. That did not make me happy. :headache:

lol Same thing happened with my Iphone 64gb too!
When I back up I just use carbon copy cloner which just selects my photo folder and moves anything new from there to the external. Though I see they are now charging for it. It used to be free :( The other thing you can do is just copy and past folders over to the external. If you just have regular jpegs an online would prob work best for you. I have large raw files so uploading and downloading would take time.

When I plug my iPhone into my PC a window pops up to export all photos and videos to my computer. It takes all of a minute at the most to download all the new stuff. Why do you have to go to iPhoto? (What is iPhoto?)

Iphoto is the default program for photos on a Mac computer. Its the program you use to download your photos off your Iphone with.

Trying not to hijack your thread, Vettechick99, but I have the same issue~ I have a quick question for people who use Shutterfly for storage...
I'm really technologically challenged... :) Once you upload your pics to Shutterfly, and delete them off your phone or computer, can you re-upload them back onto your phone if you need? Thanks! :flower3:

I use Flickr, there's an app and you can set it to automatically back up your photos while on wifi
