Back to the Floor on PBS

Did anyone see the PBS show this weekend called Back To The Floor? It showed a head person at Carnival Cruise line going around the ship doing the jobs that the 'floor' people do.

It made me feel really guility. The housekeeper oftne didn't get to eat and the staff is hardly paid a thing. Only tips. The deck waiters make money based on drinks they sell.

Is that how Disney does it? Geez! Now DH and I feel so guilty. I told him that we have to 'clean' up our room and make our bed before we leave each morning. I felt so bad hearing how hard the work was for them. They depend on those tips!

I just read that article and now I'm feeling quilty. Someone please tell me this isn't how Disney runs their ships...I thought with all the money we pay for these cruises, the employees would be paid fairly well, even with tips.

Now, I have to go and budget more for higher tips. We usually tip more than the recommended amount (depending on service) but now we'll tip even more.

What a sad article!
IF true, this indeed does not say much for Carnival Corp., the world's largest, most profitable cruise company. Can anyone shed any light?? Say it isn't so.....$1.50 a day ?? I would like to think the Mouse treats his employees better. I thought I'd read that Dis employees make minimun wage plus get room and board, so of course depend on our tips to try to make a descent salary. We indeed are blessed to 'live in the land of the free and the home of the brave.'

Why do you think they register the ship out of the US, No labor Laws, No minimum wage. Why are are most of the crew non-american??
And all think of all of the complaints on this board where people dont want to tip, or tip less than the recommended amount. Or even the comments that the staff doesnt mind the minimum (sure if this means nothing instead) Tip more if the Job is done well remember that TIP=To Insure Prompt Service.
Disney is no different than carnival, and this is all world economics,
JUST TIP DONT COMPLAIN ABOUT IT, THIS IS THEIR WAGES NOT THE PAY THAT COMES FROM THE COMPANY
Also think about it like this if you go to a resatuarant and dont want to tip expect the cost of the meal to go up considerably, when the restaurant has to pay the servers more than the $2.13 minimun wage for the server.

You definitely have a point there. Of course, tipping is a large portion of the pay rates for many service industries. Still, probably the best we can do is tip generously for good service.

I didn't get it at first, but the "Dickinson" person in the story is the president of Carnival Cruise Lines. He has come to the ship to work the menial jobs, to see what can be improved. Very cool.

Yes, none of us would want to work for those wages. It's amazing the great service we get on the ships. It does make the Tip and any extras we can give (like phone cards) much more important.
