We took a short trip for the holiday weekend and took advantage of the FL Resident rates for 1 night at the AKL and 1 night at the WL. I thought I'd just list some of the high (and low) points of this short visit!

We checked in at the AKL on Saturday about 11am. Check in was pretty crowded, but the line seemed to move pretty quickly. As soon as I presented my res info and the CM was checking us in, I noticed the lady beside me was starting to speak quite loudly to the CM she was working with - actually she was yelling at her. Of course, we couldn't help overhearing, and the jist of the matter was that she had booked two rooms under one res number with one date of departure, and she and her husband (who made the booking and whose credit card was used) were checking out as booked, but her sister and family were going to stay longer in their same room (???!!!). The CM was nicely trying to tell her that she couldn't split a stay that way - when she checked out under that res number with that original departure date they booked, the booking closed - the hotel keys wouldn't work any longer, couldn't charge to room, etc. The sister would basically have to have a new res, IF there were any rooms available. After all, Disney couldn't know and was counting on that room to be in inventory, and had probably already "sold" it to someone else who would be checking in. If the sister wanted to stay they would need to know which credit card to use, etc. Hey, it made sense to little old eavesdropping me after she explained it LOL! - but after I heard the lady yell to see the manager, I tried to tune it out because I didn't want to start off my stay in chaos. I don't know what ended up happening, but thought that was a good point to learn - if you're making ressies for everyone be sure what dates they want! And if you decide to stay longer, don't think you can just have someone else "tell" the front desk for you!

The CM checking us in was training a new girl, and she took a little time showing her different res screens and things, so when she told me that she had a nice surprise for me, I wasn't really sure what she meant. Well we got room 6201 - concierge level! Now this kind of thing NEVER happens to me.... I've read of lucky ducks who get things like this, but never me. Somehow the Pixie Dust was thrown my way this time - maybe because I was expecting a nice view of the trash cans or manure pile at AKL since I had booked a standard view, someone took pity on me, and moved me up there. Whatever happened, I was so grateful, and closed my eyes and thanked the Lord for the opportunity! Then I thanked the girls very quietly, because I thought if I said too much the screaming lady beside me would have new ammunition! My DH just kept shaking his head - then asked if I had purchased a lottery ticket for that night seeing as how it was my lucky day!

Well, we just loved the AKL, and not because of the concierge perks either. Our room was very convenient because it was located kitty-cornered right off the lounge. The view from the balcony was great, but the "thatch" hung down just a little so you had to bend down a tad to really get the great view of the animals. Not that I am complaining! Actually, I wasn't super impressed with the food offered at this concierge during the day - we had previously been to the Poly concierge (really loved) and the GF RPC (really loved), but it could be that since those stays were a few years ago, maybe the food spread has been cut a little across the board at all resorts. Just wasn't the spread I remembered. The drinks are always nice to have available though. It was probably my DH favorite of all the Disney resorts we have stayed at, so that was a big surprise to me. We would return there in a minute! And standard would be just fine....

The next day (Sunday) we checked out, and drove over to the WL. Check in was fairly empty here, and I wondered what type of room we would end up with here. No concierge upgrade here, boo hoo! but we did get a very nice courtyard room 5073 in the main building that had a spectacular view with our balcony facing out the back of the main building, so we looked straight out across the courtyard with it's little stream, to the pool, to the geyser that goes off every hour, to Bay Lake. We had a great view of the electrical water parade on the lake that evening. The only problem with this room was that there were some outside lights right at the balcony roof line, but we had blackout curtains so we could get the room dark enough to sleep and with no room on one side of us (there was a door to a look out balcony only) this room was very quiet. Well, quiet except for the noise from the lobby and the Whispering Canyon restaurant when they got to hoopin' and hollerin'! We really liked the Roaring Fork snack bar here, and thought they had a good selection and tasty food at good prices for a resort. When we checked out this morning, there were LOTS of people checking out also, so we were glad we used Express check out and didn't have to get in line. We thought this was a great resort too, and don't think you could go wrong in booking either one.

Just a couple park notes too - it was very hot and humid, and I am somewhat acclimated to the heat down here and it was still miserable to me, so I really felt sorry for people who were not used to it and were really suffering. BUT, and I am NOT a prude, really! - some people were really pushing the bounds of good taste in their bikini tops and tiny short shorts. The 300+ pound lady running to make the train dressed in just such an outfit with "Puerto Rican Primo" printed across her hardly covered rear end was certainly a sight to see! I think it's burned in my DH memory forever! Half the train was dissolved in laughter. Now I'm a little "fluffy" myself, but this was ridiculous...! Also the lady in the string bikini top and the "Booty-licious" printed across her tiny shorts with half her "plumbers crack" out with the tatoo with an arrow pointing down it (!) made you wish Disney would bring back some semblance of dress "basics". I think Zurg should start a BadDress website along with the BadShoe site!

My DH went on Mission Space and didn't care too much for it. That surprised me because he usually loves stuff, and I had heard all the great reviews and just knew it would become a favorite. He enjoyed the lift off, but not the rest. I had him try it first because I'm prone to motion sickness and wanted his opinion if he thought I'd be OK. Well, I didn't have to wait until he came out to know it wasn't for me - after I saw three different people throw up right in front of me I decided that was a no-go! I was waiting down around the corner in the shade on a bench across from the exit, and it seemed like the sick ones could get that far before losing it. I hurriedly moved right up into the store where the exit was so I didn't have to see anymore of that - yuck, almost as nauseating as riding the ride itself would have been!

If you're still here, I'll try and do an actual review with some parking tips and things I learned about both resorts soon!

I know what you mean about the clothes.

Some of these girls don't seem to have any respect for themselves. Luckily my son and daughter are still young enough that we can easily distract them to something else but c'mon ladies.....
We saw many a nasty sights this past July.

Thanks for the reports! would love to hear more.

LOL LOL LOL LOL :) WE SAW BOOTY LICIOUS also!!!!!! lol lol!!!!
It stuck in my mind also!! I thought I WISH I had that much self esteem!!! :) I think it was Friday at MK!!
We must of missed the other lady. That is so nice that you got that upgrade at AKL!! Isnt it a nice surpirse!! :)

Thanks for the great report. Did you notice scaffolding at WL? I read someone else's report (I think on Saturday) that it was a total turn off and she was really disappointed. She was also upset about the transportation there.

We'll be at WL for 8 nights in late October and was so sad about that report that I had a bad dream about WL. I was wondering if we should switch to AKL. We've never stayed at either (always POR) and we really wanted the theming of WL and the MK location. It sounds like you thought both were fine. Am I worried about nothing?

thanks

thesally - the crowds were big on Sat/Sun, but not a record or anything. The worst wait was 75 minutes for Mission Space, everything else was pretty OK. Monday at MK was less crowded, about noon I noticed a 0 wait at "It's a Small World" while across the way "Snow White" was at 25 minutes. We went on "Buzz Lightyear" twice and had about a 5 minute wait both times. The local Orlando news last night said attendance was way down on Monday because the reporter flew over the parking lots and said they were not using the overflow lots at all, compared to usual holiday traffic. Also the same at Universal.

Sandi - we noticed the scaffolding rising up high around the chimney stone on the main building out front, but it didn't bother us at all. The building is still so striking when you round the corner that we honestly didn't pay any attention to it. Maybe if you walked down to the lower parking lot to take some pictures you would catch it, but once you're at the resort I can't imagine being upset. The last time we stayed at the Poly though, they were also working on it and we didn't care, so maybe we're not the right people to ask LOL!

We thought the transportation was typical Disney - some routes are better than others. Coming back from Epcot for instance, we waited at stop #5 and the bus took us directly back to the lodge. Going there though, we did make a stop at Fort Wilderness to pick up a few people - but we enjoyed looking out the bus window at people on horseback coming back from a trailride and what the area looked like, so we didn't mind it. We enjoyed the boat transportation, and thought it was fun to watch the people buzzing around on their water mice rentals. Also the parasailors(sp?) were up and flying and you could watch them make their landings - some smooth, some ouchy! The boat to the MK (green flag) also stopped at Ft. Wilderness dock before going to the MK, but the return was direct. So we used the boat to return but when we were going to the MK we started using the second boat (blue flag) on it's short hop to the CR and just went up the escalators and jumped on the monorail there - not that it was any faster, but it's always fun to ride the monorail! (BTW, we spoke to a man who told us the $100 monorail toy for sale at Disney is their biggest seller - don't know if that's true, but I looked at them at the toy shop on Main St. and loved that you could also buy a Contemporary Resort replica, the Epcot ball, etc. Neat!)

I think you should stick to your plans and you'll love the WL, and you should take some time and explore all the options it has to offer. Be sure and watch the geyser go off! They sure do a good job with the themeing at the resorts. Go up to the 3rd floor (I think it was 3) and sit in the rockers in the little balconies that jut out overlooking the lobby. There are lots of little places to go out and enjoy the views in rocking chairs. Or do like we did after a hard day in the parks - grab a glass of wine at the Territory Lounge (right beside Artist Point) and veg out in one of the comfy chairs in the lobby and people watch. Just decide to try the AKL next time, but if you're still scared, have you looked into splitting your stay between the two with 4 days in each?

tnrbell - at 48, booty-licious I'm just not anymore! The upgrade was great because it was never expected. I didn't Fax, I didn't request, I didn't do anything, just walked up to the counter with my credit card and license - and it just happened. Probably the only time in my lifetime, but one time I actually did get an upgrade!

Thanks for the response on crowds. I'm heading to WDW next week so I'm beginning my "crowdwatch" in earnest. :)

Seahunt: Thank you for your very helpful response. It's so nice to have people who care on these boards. We'll stick with the WL; I've loved it from afar for a long time. We have the Fairy Tale Package, so splitting our stay is not an option. Otherwise, that would have been ideal. Now, if we can just be as lucky as you were with the AKL concierge! Send some pixie dust my way.

Thanks again. I feel a lot better.

The scaffolding is not bad at all. It is just on the rock chimney out front. I bet it will be finished soon. I agree about the clothing!!! It was super hot but- wow- some of the outfits we saw last week were amazing. Thongs totally visible on 15 year olds (what are their parents thinking), very low cut tops (with stretch marks all over), bikini tops, large stomachs hanging out. Some people really look lovely-very nicely dressed but others look like hookers. I am not a prude either-I am still young. :)

WOW! What an upgrade! How lucky are YOU!!!! Too bad your WL stay wasn't longer than 1 night! Thanks for the great report! I don't know how I'm going to wait 43 more days!!!!!

Loved your "fashion report." I am greatly amused and intrigued by what people choose to wear. I work in a large office building full of bankers and lawyers and acountants. Every so often I will see someone coming to work in a sequined cocktail dress ... what goes through their mind that makes then think it is appropriate? Did the heavy lady you saw look in the mirror and think she looked good? Sure makes people watching interesting!

THANKYOU!!! I was wondering if I should post something on the topic of totally inappropriate attire in the parks. We were there 8/23-31 and the bikini tops were out of control. I have been to Disney many times and I can't remember seeing so much flesh, no matter how hot it has been. I saw enough belly rings to last me a life time. One of the things I love about Disney is it has been one of the last places you can take your kids that really is family oriented. I almost passed out when my 7 year old daughter said "Wow mommy, there are a lot of women showing their boobies" As far as it being hot as their excuse, I have been to many islands in the Caribbean which are just as hot and they have dress codes for the entire island. Shirts are required everywhere but on the beach, and yes, the shirt police will come and tell you to cover up. I am thinking of asking Disney to have a shirts required policy for their parks. I did notice on the resort buses from the water parks there is a sign saying you must have shirt and shoes to get on the bus. I don't know why they couldn't do this for all the parks also. I am so glad I was not the only one who found the dress tasteless.

Oh yeah I almost forgot, there was a woman at SAB in a THONG!!! She did put a towel over her bottom when she turned over so I dont know if someone told her to do so or not. but the towel only made it look like she had nothing on! lol :)

I had to laugh at your "fashion" report. I'm all for comfort but don't these people have any sense of pride? But I guess that it makes life more interesting. :teeth:

As for the people getting sick after getting off of Mission Space, that is certainly interesting. I have trouble with Body Wars and enclosed spaces so I'm wavering on this one. I really don't want to be sick!
