1998 DCL brochure 2.JPG 1998 DCL brochure.JPG

I came across a DCL brochure from 1998-1999 while cleaning out a drawer. Thought it would be interesting to compare to today's prices

This was before 7 day cruises but includes 7 day land/sea vacations as well as 3 day cruises and 4 day cruises.

And, airfare was included in the prices!!

ETA I apologize the picture will not zoom in enough to see. I will have to post as a document tomorrow.

This is so funny! I remember, even before these first came out, the Big Red Boat. I remember thinking, Who would want to sail on a ship with Mickey Mouse then go to the Bahamas. .. Clearly, I didn't get it. Lol

Now that you mention that I do remember that Big Red Boat stuff, but why that? What was Big Red Boat all about? Most of the red is below the waterline, and the funnels of course, but hardly enough to say big red boat.

If I'm not mistaken, it was a different ship and a different parent cruise line company? And the ship had more red on the stacks and hull. Very blurry in my memory, but I remember the television commercials.

It was a big red boat:

The original Big Red Boat had a red hull with white lettering. Later incarnations of the ship were black. Even though the name of the ship was Big Red Boat. Or Big Red Boat II. Premier Lines was under contract agreement with Disney to provide the sea portion of a land sea vacation, with a couple of characters onboard. When the contract expired, DCL was formed. Not long after that ,they partnered with Looney Tunes, and then went out of business. We were on the Magic in Nassau with the BRB docked next to us. At midnight, there was a fireworks show on deck. With a party. When the party started, the BRB formed a list to the side that faced the Magic. It self corrected after the show.

Oh so this precedes even the Magic and Wonder?

Yes. It was a partnership that started in 85 but it ended around 93. They went belly up in 2000. Part of the reason was that the ships were built back before the ADA requirements and also before showers and bathrooms in the cabins. All of the ships were formerly from other lines. It was too costly to update them, and with new ships coming out with better amenities, they went down hill. Basically as the story goes, when the contract between Premier and Disney was coming up, there was 3 choices.
1. Renew the contract as is.
2. Get out of the cruising business all together.
3. Form their own cruise line.

I think we all know what the choice was.

Well I'm glad they chose 3 because I'm not a fan of the red hull, but at least now I know where Big Red Boat comes from.

There is a book if you can get your hands on it, called Disney Magic, The Launching of a Dream, goes in to more details on the formation of DCL and the designing and building of the Magic class.

Very interesting, and would you recommend for all those that like DCL that haven't tried the Magic, to do so while they still can in the next few years?

Not only did the Premier partnership predate DCL, but they even had an island destination before Castaway Cay. Here is a fairly good video explaining it, including an interview of the then-CEO of Premier:

Wow! Thanks for posting! That was the commercial I remember! And I *thought* the BRB went to an island but thought that could have been a false memory. Wow, could you imagine a midnite buffet on Castaway Cay? Or camping overnight? ? Anyone on these Boards ever been to Treasure Cay?

I would. We've been on all 4 and plan to do the next 2. Each ship has its own personality.

Dunno if I would sleep on the island, but a midnight buffet followed by a stroll down a tiki torch lit beach would be incredible.

Why just the next few years? As has been pointed out in several other threads, there has been zero indication that they are getting rid of the Classics, and the ships likely have at least 20 more years in them.

One of the popular theories right wrong or indifferent says the Magic will let be retired when the new ships come in.

Great thread! Thanks for the memories.

My first cruise was on the BRB back in 1995. By then Disney characters had been replaced by Looney Tunes as Disney had ended their contract with them.
