Back from Wonderland:wAlice,Madhatter,ChesCat&White Rabbit 11/11Thank You

Hey there! I've been following along and now actually have the chance to make a post :goodvibes I'm enjoying your updates and your pics, I would soooo love to go to NYC. My daughter asks me daily to go see the Lion King and is growing impatient with my "someday" responses. :rotfl:

I'm so very sorry about the untimely demise of your cupcakes, they did sound ever so yummy. We have a Cupcakes store here in our west end that I'm fairly certain you would adore. :cloud9:

EEK - those poor poor cupcakes. Of course, since I like frosting better than cake, I probably would have still eaten the beige blob for dessert :rotfl:

Love the information about the behind the scenes tour, we may have to add that to our list when we get back to NY.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

I need a moment to mourn your cupcakes...:sad1:

Okay, I think I will be able to carry on now.

I remember the Times Square of twenty years ago only too well! Our first trip there was in 1988, and I was pretty much like  any time we walked through Times Square. We didn't have anything like it in Charleston! :lmao:

OH NO!!! Those poor cupcakes. Hopefully you will find some Disney-food to make up for it. Plus, it doesn't sound like it's the last time you'll ever make it to Magnolia Bakery.

The last time I was in Times Square was during that high school trip (like half the people that have been there on the trip, my band was in the Macy's parade my freshman year). So it was, uh, 1990. I don't remember anything about it. I don't think any of the Disney Broadway shows had started just yet.

I knew ABD has a Williamsburg-Philadelphia-Boston itenerary which I was to...um...look at to "borrow" from, but I didn't know about the NYC-Boston-Rhode Island one. We'll have to check into that one too. I am a HUGE Revolutionary War buff, plus my dad's family is from New Hampshire, so I love New England. LOVE it. Except that it is STINKIN' cold in the winter. Don't. Like.The.Cold. But I still have a lot of family there. My dad's younger sister (who is 6 years younger than him) has two boys which are my only cousins still in college. In 2011 on will get his BA, the other his Law degree. We are going up there for a joint party. I haven't been up there since (I think) before my kids were born so I am :yay::yay::yay: about it. Can't wait to take the boys to the science museum in Boston. And Paul Revere's house. And a million other things. Anyway...I digress...

Looking forward to the next installment....when you should be...IN DISNEY!!! :woohoo:

I remember the Times Square of twenty years ago only too well! Our first trip there in 1988, and I was pretty much like  any time we walked through Times Square. We didn't have anything like it in Charleston! :lmao:

CP!! My one and only visit to NY was in '88 too! My mom took me after I graduated from HS, kind of a senior present. Maybe we passed each other in Times Square.

I loved this update. Well, except for the poor hapless cupcakes turning into monster cake.

The BBQ place looks wonderful, I'd like to order some brisket and sweet potatoes, please. I love the term meat candy. I'm going to figure out how to work that into conversation, soon.:rotfl:

Aren't park and stays great? Genius idea, I say. Looking forward to hearing about departure day.:yay:

Hi Patricia! Welcome Back!! :yay:

I'm trying to catch up with you... I read post one, but its past midnight and I can feel myself turning into a pumpkin (or at least a small gourd.)

Luckily, I'm off tomorrow and can come back to read more!! :thumbsup2

Kathy

:lmao::rotfl::rotfl2: I would so pull a muscle or worse! :lmao:

Off to check out the ticket prices for the show...

Acrobat school is probably out for me as well considering I've been known to walk into walls... it was a nice thought while it lasted...

Curious to hear if the Atlanta show works out for you...

btw...I've been pricing airfare from Phila. to Charleston for an anniversary weekend in October...:rolleyes1...may need some suggestions...

OK, I read everything so far :goodvibes

I'm sorry you had a bit of a rought start - emotions running high, patience running short and a time crunch get the best of us

I'm glad you all enjoyed the show and the tour - it sounds and looks incredible! That is now on my "bucket list" :thumbsup2

Your tea looked lovely - I'm a sucker for a good British tea!

How cute that there is an Alice area and a Strawberry Fields - yet more stuff added to the bucket list

Oooh, cupcakes! :woohoo: Sorry in advance for the cupcakes' untimely demise :rotfl: We have a store here called simply "Cupcake". We tried them the other day and, frankly, the cupcakes didn't live up to their hefty price :sad2:

EMILY:
Great pictures, thanks for sharing and you're right, we DISsers do love pictures! :flower3:

We always have a bit of a wild start-I'm a good planner but sometimes not as good of an organizer-if that makes sense...

I love a good tea also...:cloud9:I'm particularly fond of scones and clotted cream...

I think that since cupcakes have become "trendy" over the last several years-you have a lot of Cupcake bakeries open-but not all cupcakes are created equal in taste...:confused3...these did look good...oh well we try some next time...

LOL-I'm afraid Emily has become more influenced by my DISing-the restroom...?:rotfl:

OH NO Cupcakes have an untimely demise...say it isn't so...they sounded so wonderful!!

Once again I'm so glad you included your tour of NYC in this report! I would love to visit Radio Music Hall and see all those amazing sites!!

I'm really looking forward to hearing about dinner and then finding out what happened to those poor cupcakes!!

Apparently baked goods are not safe in my care......probably for a variety of reasons...:rolleyes1

Do go to NY sometime-the flights usually aren't too bad $-since so many go in and out... and it really is chock full of sights-there really is something of interest to everyone...

Hey scrappie-your guess on the cause of the demise was pretty darn close...:thumbsup2

Radio City Music Hall always reminds me of the scene in Annie where Daddy Warbucks buys out the place to take her to a movie. Soooo glamorous. I'm a sucker for that stuff.:cloud9: Yea for DH for snagging tickets.:thumbsup2

I'm starting to mourn those little cupcakes already. I wish we had a decent bakery nearby that sold something other than donuts.:sad2:

I can't tell you how many times we watched Annie when Emily was younger...:happytv:-but it was an awful lot...

Hey a well made donut is nothing to sneeze at-but I hear you- it's nice to have choice...but at least you get to keep chickens out where you are...:(I still miss my rooster friend I met before we left for our trip at my nephew's bd party...:confused3

I'm in and can't wait to read more!

Denise
pixiedust: Welcome Denise-glad to have you along...

I have been dying to tell you that I ordered the Star Wars fandex for Connor's birthday in September and just finished a book that you might like -- Baking Cakes in Kigali by Gaile Parkin!

Jackie I just remembered to tell you that I put the book on my B& N wish list-it sounds great...:goodvibes-Flossbolna suggested something too...I think back on the PTR that I want to add also-I remember JenJolt talking about a "cesspool of Disney enabling"...:lmao:I think we have a bit of a B&N enabling as well...

Connor is bound to love the fandex...:goodvibes-it may help you too figure out some of those "lesser" known characters...

I hear you on Times Square overstimulation:scared1: My kids always want to ride that silly ferris wheel in Toys R Us. I'm a little embarrased to admit it, but we've actually done it a time or two:rolleyes1 And I know what you mean by "New York crowded." One time when we were up there I warned my kids they had to stay right by us and not dawdle because they would really get run over by a walker. You should have seen the look on my son's face when he was dawdling a few feet away from us and someone literally ran him over. Let's just say he learned something about believing whay your parents tells you:lmao: And I'm so sorry about the cupcakes. Hopefully dreams of Disney made the loss bearable:rolleyes:

Ok, links. There may be a better way, but this is how I was taught. First, go to the post you want to link to. Right click on the post number in the upper right corner. The last option is properties. Click on it and some info comes up including the URL number. Highlight the URL then right click on that portion and click on copy. Next, go to your first post and hit edit. Go to the spot in your post where you want the links to go then click on the insert link icon, it looks like a globe with a paperclip. A box will open up. Hit backspace to erase the http: that is highlighted and then right click in the box and click paste. The URL will be written twice in your post now, with the second one highlighted. If you want to name your post, then hit backspace to erase the second copy of the URL and type in what you want. And to change your TR title click on the "advanced" button when you edit and it will let you change the title.

Hope this helps. PM me if you have trouble
First thanks on the tech help-I think I just might have managed it...:goodvibes

My children have been on that ferris wheel as well...:rolleyes1-when they see it-well I guess it's pretty awesome from a kid's perspective...

So sorry about your son...:confused3-but I can believe in in that location...pretty intense...I'm glad he was ok-but you're right particularly in that area-it probably isn't such a great idea to stroll-I think a power walk is more in order...-

I totally understand your feelings on Times Square!! My kids are completely fasinated by it but I get this get me the heck outta here feeling. I wonder if its some find of subconscious thing due to knowing about the jaded past of area!

Your meal at Daisy May's sounds absolutely wonderful! Yummy! You actually made me hungry and I just ate dinner!!

I'm so, so, sorry about the cupcakes!! They sounded soooooooooo good! I hear that there are some super yummy cupcakes at Capt Cooks at Poly!! I didn't get to indulge in one in March when DH and I stayed there because we only ever went to Capt Cooks for breakfast. I may have try one after our dinner at Ohana though...

I think in my case its a fear of being trampled...:lmao:-actually that's probably not funny...

Daisy Mays's was sooo good-BBQ isn't something we get often and theirs is just so yum...

We wound up with plenty of sweets including a couple of enormous cupcakes from Starring Rolls...we definitely made our sugar quotient the rest of the week...;)

:cloud9:

Aww...try to take her...it is expensive but you know they occasionally run "specials" like 2 for 1s-KathyRN got a great buy one get free (I think that was it) around Mother's Day for Little Mermaid and I've seen other occasional specials on the Passporter site

We saw the (sadly now gone) Tarzan a couple of years back as well as Mary Poppins-when we were in London...:cloud9: (I will never forget that show...)

IMHO the Disney productions are amazing...

Oh I'm sure I'd adore the Cupcake store in your west end...:goodvibes-actually I'd love to see more of Canada...only been to Montreal and Quebec...

EEK - those poor poor cupcakes. Of course, since I like frosting better than cake, I probably would have still eaten the beige blob for dessert :rotfl:

Love the information about the behind the scenes tour, we may have to add that to our list when we get back to NY.

You know for a moment I thought of going for some icing-but I was just too sad...

Going back to NY anytime soon?

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

I need a moment to mourn your cupcakes...:sad1:

The fact that you didn't have anything like it back in Charleston in 1988-seems to be a big selling point in Charleston's favor...;)

I will be more than happy to suggest away!!! :goodvibes

Yes, I do think there is a good bit of B&N enabling going on around here! In fact, I am headed there and to the Disney Store this weekend, I think, since I "need" a few things.

I am excited to see what Connor thinks of the fandex -- I just know he will love it.

The fact that you didn't have anything like it back in Charleston in 1988-seems to be a big selling point in Charleston's favor...;)

:lmao: You are so right!

YOU were in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade...:worship:I"ve watched that parade every year since I was about 5! I probably saw you! I was always so excited to wait for Santa Claus-cause we all know that the Macy's Santa is the real Santa...(I actually sometimes tear up when I see the sled pull up...yeah-I'm a geek-I already knew it...

I'm a bit of a Revolutionary War buff too-love Boston-went to Concord and Lexington-got chills...really like NH-the mountains and the lakes...-also really liked the bits of Southern Maine I've been too...I do like the cooler weather in the summer-hmm...not sure how I'd fare in the winter...You can talk history and New England whenever you want...;)

Um yes-Disney...first day or at least part of the first day should be up by tonight-I do believe that is the purpose of this Trip Report...:lmao:

CP!! My one and only visit to NY was in '88 too! My mom took me after I graduated from HS, kind of a senior present. Maybe we passed each other in Times Square.

A bunch of us could have been in TS in 1988-it could have been like an unofficial pre Dis meet...:lmao:-we just didn't know it at the time...:rotfl2:

The BBQ was amazing...

Departure Day and check in-next up...

Wouldn't that be funny??? We went in June and stayed at the Hotel Edison.

:lmao::lmao::grouphug:

Hi Patricia! Welcome Back!! :yay:

I'm trying to catch up with you... I read post one, but its past midnight and I can feel myself turning into a pumpkin (or at least a small gourd.)

Luckily, I'm off tomorrow and can come back to read more!! :thumbsup2

Kathy
Hey Kathy welcome over...pixiedust:-well wow- you're up after midnight-I've already turned into a pumpkin by then...

I've made it through all but 15 of your 142 pages of your PTR-should finish today...and post...I have a cold so I figure I have a good excuse to be DISing...:goodvibes

Those poor poor cupcakes...I think I might have tasted them you know just because well I'm an icing lover too LOL!!!

You guys had such a great time in NYC I loved living vicariously through you!!!!!

Hmmm...me love some Kansas City BBQ...that place sounds yummy!!

Oooh departure day is right around the corner YAY!!! Can't wait to hear about the Disney side of your trip!!

You know for a moment I thought of going for some icing-but I was just too sad...

ooooooooooooooooooo, you must have been sad. I would have been too, but then that sugary goodness would have been way too powerful to me :rotfl:

Going back to NY anytime soon?

We keep talking about it as we haven't been back to NY since we moved back to Chicago about ten years ago. I'd love to see Rock of Ages, and DH agreed to see it as well. I'm thinking if it doesn't tour next year, we'll end up heading out for a weekend.

FLYING IS NOT SO MUCH FUN, ARRIVING IS & A MAGICAL CHECK IN...

We all woke up at 5 am (although White Rabbit pushed it to 5:30) to catch our 6:00 shuttle to the airport-our flight was to take off at 8:30 so after getting quickly dressed we got our luggage down to the lobby and our shuttle promptly arrived at 6 am. All was uneventful until we approached the entrance ramps into Newark-where we slowed down due to traffic-lots and lots of traffic...luckily our shuttle driver knew a sort of "back route" and we were there and curb checked in a jiff...boy oh boy how I love Magic Express...I don't particularly enjoy flying-in addition to the actual "flying" concept... there's all the getting there-to the airport, to the correct gate, etc. Madhatter goes into a major type A mode- getting securely onto our flight is a kind of minivictory and he looks at the process as a little strategic battle...

Now it was time for one of my very least favorite parts of air travel-the security check. In addition to worrying about the kids accidently having some sort of metal on them that I don't know about and setting off the security detector, or for some reason Hatter or I getting pulled out for a random search which would send Alice into a panic attack, I now worry when they ask the kids their names and ages, etc. We've traveled a reasonable amount and it has always gone fine-but I just worry that one day White Rabbit may just be in a mood and either decide he doesn't feel like answering or he will choose that moment to try out a new identity for fun...Like: "What's your name?" wall.e "How old are you?" Hmmm...not sure...a couple hundred of years or so?... Fortunately my fears were for naught this time...

Now Hatter and White Rabbit are normally seat mates and Alice and I are. The fact that the Rabbit has Asperger's might lead you to assume that he is the more difficult flyer. But this is in fact incorrect. VERY VERY INCORRECT. Rabbit loves to fly. You can hear him laughing robustly as the plane takes off and even sometimes when we hit a patch of turbulence. If he has some books or a toy and a video he's good...Alice on the other hand...absolutely hates to fly...In fact she almost cut off my circulation once grabbing my arm so tightly...the fact that she sits there looking like if we actually land it will be a miracle is not very comforting...not at all...:confused3...so recently I have resorted to "medicating" her...everyone is happier this way...especially her...her head hit the fold out tray before we even took off...I felt validated in my decision when I realized we had "squealers'" behind us who squealed in a rather nervous way for about 5 minutes before, during and after take off... (They also crossed themselves and applauded when we landed...like it wasn't a guaranteed thing in anyway and they were pleasantly surprised...)

The actual flight was remarkably uneventful and fairly short at 2 hours. The captain announced touchdown in Orlando at 10:30...and we got off and made our way over and onto that little monorail thing (it must have a real name) that takes you to the other terminal and the Magic Express Buses (I love that little monorail thing...it lets me know that we're almost there ...) We made our way down-without having to pick up our luggage-did I manage how much I love Magic Express?...and WE SAW our first CMs waving people through the queue to the correct buses...We're getting closer....(at about 20 minutes this was our longest wait for any bus the entire trip and as we were looking out the windows waiting for it to come...we saw...RAIN...big teaming raindrops...oh say it isn't so...ok no panic....if it rains now that makes it statistically less likely to rain tomorrow-our first day planned at the MK.

ON the Bus we go hi ho & now the excitement is REALLY building...am I the only one who gets all excited on those buses with the red starred upholstery and that corny film that shows all the Disney characters checking into the the Grand Floridian-you know the film where Scrooge McDuck is checking in with Donald and Daisy and Huey, Duey and Louie? Plus all the other characters, Lilo and Stitch, Belle and the Beast, Genie, etc, etc, etc. (I love that film-because it means we're getting even CLOSER...)

100_0509.jpg

100_0511.jpg

First we had a stop to let off at the CSR which I was anxious to see as much as I could from the bus having read so many positive reviews...but I was really anxious at this point to get to Jambo House...

Driving, driving, stop for light. Turn. Driving. Stop...and there's a sign for Disney's Animal Kingdom and Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge...I'm bouncing in my seat-just a little bit....OMG...there's the sign for the resort...we'll be there in a minute...

The outside of Jambo house isn't really pretty in the traditional sense (in say the way the GF is pretty) but it is handsome and absolutely has a presence...you know you're somewhere different...special...Off the bus we go...and walk towards those doors...Welcome Home Indeed...the doors automatically open and...

Bliss...Oh how I've missed you AKL...your gorgeous lobby with its 5 story atrium...your warm, earthy colors evoking an African savannah and the colors of lions and giraffes...your many cozy seating areas that call out to be sat on...your enormous stunning winding letting in the light and allowing a view out onto the savannah...that fabulous mildly smoky, curry spice scent that seems to gently waft throughout the buildings...I am totally and completely blissed out...I could lay on the floor in the center of the floor and weep with joy...but I'll suppress the urge...

100_0529.jpg

But to business...we need to check in-we did online check in so it should be a short process (I know our room probably won't be ready since its only 11:30 but you never know and we have to check in anyway...I'm vaguely aware that Hatter is talking to the CM as I continue to blissfully soak in my surroundings...in one ear I'm hearing all the normal check in things...name, id, length of stay, here's a bday button for White Rabbit but then I hear something that pulls my attention away from the atrium and focus directly on the CM...UPGRADED...

(We had booked a pool view-easier on the budget and there are numerous places to view the animals throughout the Lodge...

But UPGRADED and not just one Upgrade but technically 2-we are being upgraded to a Concierge Savannah Room...Concierge is one upgrade and Savannah is one upgrade so in effect -WE HAVE JUST BEEN DOUBLY Upgraded...Bliss, Bliss, Bliss...

However... as expected our room isn't ready-I'm not complaining just stating the fact... so we decide to head down to the Mara for a quick lunch. Mara is pretty crowded which I assume has to do with the rain-some people have perhaps decided to wait for the rain to stop before going out...

We were on Disney Dining Plan-Free DD-one of the reasons Hatter had gotten behind this trip in the first place so this was our first experience using it and this would be our first counter service meal...It (DDP) gives a generous amount of food...I ordered the chicken & corn flatbread, Alice ordered a Chicken Caesar Salad-we were sharing-Hatter got a shrimp and fries platter and Rabbit went with his first of many cheeseburgers...we were also eligible for beverages and desserts. I went to get a table for us with Rabbit-leaving Alice and Hatter to get the desserts and drinks...hmmm....In addition to our entrees...they show up at the table with 3 boxes of zebra domes-5 to a box-so we now have 15 zebra domes...I questioned if perhaps some fruit might have been in order and Hatter looks at me and says "oh that would have been a good idea"...Do you think?

Anyway the flatbread was amazing-the chicken was a little curried and it was well just yum...the domes of course were good-Emily is now a zebra dome addict-I confess while I do like them-they aren't my all time favorite dessert but Emily is ready to start a ZD fan club...(We were at the beginning of the trip and hungry so I forgot to take many lunch photos except Em eating a ZD.)

100_0516.jpg

At this point Hatter's phone rang and guess what? Our room was ready...I was jazzed...4th floor-here we come-4409...card key...open...Oh yes...I'm home...run to the window and WOW-this is awesome...the savannah and ok its raining right now-no animals but still...too cool...

Our luggage wasn't there yet but we had enough stuff for a quick freshen up...and we got ready to go to Downtown Disney and see quite how quickly a 7 year old could burn through his birthday money and what we would all think of Wolfgang Puck's Express and the make your own treats at Goofy's Candy Company

Up next: We will not let the rain ruin our shopping trip...Lightsabers and Legos, TrenD and lots of yumminess...

:woohoo::yay: for the double upgrade. What an awesome way to start a trip!!

Your DD and I would certainly be a pair on a plane...I think the other passengers might chip in to give us our own private one! :lmao:

YAY for arriving at AKL and what an upgrade you got...seriously concierge and savannah view...give me some of that pixie dust LOL!!!!!!

I am making it my goal this time to try some Zebra Domes I have heard much about them and I want to try them for myself...we're having dinner at Sanaa so I'm hitting up Mara on my way out of AKL!!!!!

Great update!!! I really can't wait to hear more!!

Woo Hoo for the double upgrade!!!

I'm going to have to figure out a way to try those Zebra Domes in December...

Denise

Doubly upgraded?!! that's like a ton of pixie dust!!!!

We were upgraded in March 08 from a garden view room at GF to concierges! It was truly magical! I can't wait to stay club level at AKV at some point!!All the amenities of club level were such a treat!!!

I must agree with you on the zebra domes. I like them just fine but they aren't my favorite thing in the whole world! SIL and BIL on the other hand rave about them and would probably be willing to be charter members if your DD started a ZB fan club!!!

I can't wait to hear about you experience in DTD! Especially TrenD! I can't wait to go there!!! I'm not planning on a DTD trip in Oct but I'm all over it in Jan!!!

I often wonder if Connor will decide to try on a new identity at an inopportune time as well! :rotfl:

Ahhh, how I loved your description of entering the AKL and Em's picture says it all, doesn't it? :thumbsup2

Holy Awesome Double Upgrade!!! Concierge Savannah??? You are so lucky!!!

Chelsea and I want to sign up to be charter members of the zebra dome fan club!

HOLY PIXIE DUST BATMAN!!!

I've always wanted to be on the Conceirge level (okay, always since I first heard about it....like last week on jaycns thread)! We got upgraded to Savannah the one time we were at AKL (we'd had a standard view), but I'd heard that happens a lot (there just aren't many standard view rooms there). But wow, conceirge. COOL!

We're doing Boma this time and I'm looking forward to trying the zebra domes myself. 5 out of 8 (for me-6 out of 8 for Matt) of the restaurants we are doing are new to us, so I'm excited.

Okay, where are all the lobby pics? I LOVE AKL too. I'm seriously thinking of renting DVC there for when we go in June. We did it for Will's 4th birthday and it was amazing.

Looking forward to DTD. :)
