We got back Tuesday night from our trip to VWL/WL, four nights later than planned thanks to Frances. While the extended trip (4 nights first at Univeral, 5 at VWL and an additional 4 at the WL) was not what we planned, I feel Disney handled the whole situation very well.

We were in a 2 bedroom villa from Sun - Fri, but when we learned the airport was to close on Friday (our day to leave), we spoke to the front desk. We could extend our stay in our villa for either points (which we didn't want to do), or a discounted rate of $455 per night. We were also offered other discounted rates for the studio or one bedroom. We opted to take a room in the Lodge for two reasons. One, mainly, the cost. We were offered a regular room for $109 per night, it usually goes for $199. The other reason we chose was because we knew that the Lodge had more facilities (food and activities) than the villas could offer when we were no longer permitted to go outside. It was tough for all of us to go from the 2 bedroom to one hotel room, but we felt safe and lucky to have a place to stay. I know they were not taking any new reservations (and know this was a problem for someone else who has reported here), but there were reasons for this. First, they needed to have rooms for the CMs who were there to work during the hurricane. Second, their obligation was to the people who already had their rooms at Disney. Not only did they evacuate Fort Wilderness, but I know at least people from the All Stars (and perhaps other resorts too) were moved to the WL because with all the rain forecasted, they needed to make sure the people in the lower lying resorts had a safe, dry place to stay.

The CMs were wonderful during it. There were plenty of them there helping everything to run as smoothly as possible. We were kept updated by letters each day (five days while we were there) about what was going on. We also got phone calls in the room to update us on a few things too. They planned activities on Saturday as long as they could do things outside, and then when necessary moved things inside the lobby. They had the characters come numerous times, and brought over some of the performers from other areas ( i.e., the Japanese candy lady from Epcot, African story tellers from AK). We were required to be in our room during the worst of the hurricane on Sunday from 12 - 5. We could get box lunches if we wanted at that time.

I am way behind at home, the kids missed the first day of school, it will take me a good couple of days to catch up. Not how I had planned it, but I feel Disney made the best of a difficult situation. It was a great trip, the bonuses were the parks on Thurs and Fri before the storm were really empty, and on Monday my daughter and I (we have APs) went into MK and I have never ever in all my years of going to Disney seen such low attendance. Pretty much right onto every single ride as much as we wanted. Our trip home was an adventure. We had to drive to Tampa, fly from Tampa to Miami, fly from Miami to Boston, Fly from Boston to New York, and then drive to CT. On the long leg of the trip (Miami to Boston) we were bumped to first class -- first time ever for me -- pixie dust!

I'm happy to answer any questions

I'm glad you arrived home safely.

My sister was at a time share in Key West and was supposed to be home on Sunday. She called last night (Wednesday) just to say they were finally home, and it was a very very bad vacation and she'd be telling us more.

To think that just a few years ago WDW had only been closed one day ever due to hurricanes. It makes me realize just how lucky we've been, we've often gone to WDW in Sept. or late August.

Thanks for telling us your story.

Sounds like an experience for your family scrapbook! Glad you got through it in good shape. Thanks for sharing your story.

Glad you're back home safe and sound. It sounds like you made the best out of a bad situation. Welcome back!!

Hi,

Glad you are back safe!!!

Allison

VMS, I have a question.

How high did the water get to the boardwalks going to/from WL to VWL?

I wondered if that area could flood. We were there one Dec and it rained almost the whole time and it was like a lake out there!

The first time I went outside was on Monday morning when my daughter and I went to get the bus to the MK. There was a puddle there that I took my sandals off to walk through, it was a couple of inches deep. We took the boat back (it was not running in the AM), and when we returned about 6pm I did not notice any flooding.

Glad you made it safely! We checked out the Thurs. before Francis and MCO was a nightmare! We were fortunate enough to catch our plane to Providence and make it home before the weather turned bad.

If you don't mind me asking, how many people ended up in one room for the hurricane? I was just wondering how Disney dealt with placing families (with more than 4 members) from Fort Wilderness (or other hotels in your case) into different hotels for the storms. I didn't know if they would offer you 2 rooms if needed or made everyone stay in one room under these circumstances. Just curious how Disney handled this type of situation with larger families.....

We are a family of 5 and they knew this and gave us the keys for 5 people when we got the one room. It was not even an issue. It's funny, I thought of Rich Hyams posts on this subject as this was all taking place, and then got home and learned of the sad news about him. We asked for a room with a bunk bed so that we would have more floor space for all of our stuff, and that was helpful. They took turns with one of my children each night sleeping on the floor with blankets for padding. The room was ready at 8:30 on Friday morning, so it was helpful to have the overlap of the 2 reservations for the switchover and not have some of the day without a room.

The housekeeping was limited during the time. It was more of a trash and towel service everyday because of staffing shortages.

Same situation here. Same time frame too. We had to extend our stay from Friday night through Monday night. On exeception at 4:30 on Thursday afternoon we were told that no rooms were available at the Lodge and that we would have to stay at the Villas. I could not pay the 455.oo for the the two bedroom rate and had no other option but to use points... yes that's right 60 points per night for Fri. and Sat. and 30 pts for Sunday. I do not feel that they handled the situation well at all! I was forced to drain every point I have till 2006! I found out that the extended discounted room rate at the Lodge for the same time period was 109.00 per night !!! I know that the Lodge and DVC are two different animals and should not be compared BUT due to the unforseen act of nature I thought DVC would have reduced the pt. rate per night at least! They know that they were not going to fill the room in the villas because most flights were cancelled and most incoming guests were not coming in. I got to sit in my two bedroom for two days watching the wind and rain. Lots of fun. My vacations to Disney will be put on hold for quite some time. I have emailed Member services about my unhappiness and await an answer. I expected more from them.

I am glad to see that you made it back safely.

mkkim,
I am also glad to hear that you made it back safely.
We were supposed to be heading home today but had cancelled our trip. I spent my vacation on these boards. However, I have to think about how fortunate that we all are to have many opportunities to return to WDW, whereas others may have been on their once in a lifetime trip. I know that the point situtation stinks and hopefully ms will help you. Just remember how fortunate you were to have a place to stay and be safe. I hope that it all works out.

We were at BWV for Charley so I can relate to your story somewhat!

SOme questions, just to further compare:

* During what periods were the parks open?

* Did the parks close for any half-days or such while you were there? (resulting in a return of the day to your ticket) Although since you have APs, that wouldn't really be an issue for you, I guess...

* Did they charge $$ for the box meals and if so how much? (BWV tried to give them away -- and the result was SHEER MADNESS. Greedy oinkers came and took 'em all leaving nothing for the remaining half of the occupants.) WHat restaurants were open in WL? And how long did they "quarantine" you to the resort (not just the hours they wanted you in your room)?

* How high did the winds get during the height of Frances? (Just wondering how strong the impact was by the time it hit Orlando).

* What parks closed / stayed closed during / after the storm? (For Charley, they closed AK and TL the day of its arrival, and after Charley, those parks stayed closed. We thought it was due to damage, but then were told it was due to staffing -- they were operating with too few CMs to staff all the parks. WOndering if Frances took a higher employee toll and forced additional closures...)

ONe thing's for sure -- I now wholly forgive my family and friends for not wondering if we had been "wiped out" in Charley. (THey would say things like, "Oh... a storm came near you? Hurricane who? ) A few folks said, "Oh, you know -- I wondered about that.. heard something about a hurricane in Florida and thought, Hmmmm... I wonder if Cindy is in that?" Meanwhile -- down at BWV, there we sat -- watching reports of the eye headed right at us in 3-D! Honestly, while the Weather Channel seems to eat stuff like this up, the rest of the news around here hardly registered Frances on its radar -- and never mentioned that it even hit Orlando. They showed shots of flooding and such across the state of Florida nad Georgia, but that's about it. THe only real news we got on Frances was when it hit our own state (WV) as a tropical storm / depression this week! I guess everybody just focuses on their own homefront -- to heck with the rest of the world. Maybe I find that bizarre because (a) weather fascinates me and (b) I focus so HEAVILY on Disney 24/7 -- even when I'm not there! Ohhh I am a sick, sick puppy.

Sorry to bombard you with questions... and glad you made it home at last and intact!

And to the person who had to suck up all their points to stay -- I agree that some sort of "discount" should be recognized. Points are money too... If they offer a discount in price, it seems they should be able to offer a discount in points, some way, some how. ON a percentage basis, maybe? I guess it gets complicated. Technically, could you have gotten a cash discount, paid for the room, then rented the points you used to reimburse yourself? THat would somehow equate to a "points discount". In any case -- Let us know what comes of your letter to DVC. You never know -- one of us could be the next person stuck in a hurricane. It sounds like there were all sorts of different experiences out there (from being offered cheaper rooms to not being given a room at all). Sorry you had one of the less favorable ones.

Free Time

Yes, I am VERY thankful that I was able to get back safely and I know it could have been worse. I have friends that live on the coast and didn't make out so well.

BUT...it's very easy for people to say these things when they have a bank filled with points!! It will be a VERY VERY long time before we are able to go back for future trips. So I do hope that you enjoy and appreciate your upcoming trips. We are still waiting to hear from Member Services.

All parks were closed on Saturday and Sunday. They were originally going to close DD early on Fri. and not open up PI. While we were at AK on Friday, they made a parkwide announcement that DD would be open later than they annonced originally, and that PI would be open. That was because the storm was taking longer to reach FL. For Sat and Sun everything was closed, including transportation. On Monday, Epcot and the MK opened at 10, (they would let you get to character breakfasts if you had ressies for that earlier than 10), AK, MGM, golf courses, mini golf, and BB were closed. TL was normal hours.

The lunches were called the "Sunday Special" on the receipt from Roaring forks. They were $5 each, the choices were ham and cheese, turkey and cheese, or PB & J. They came with a bag of chips, dessert, and a beverage. Very well coordinated. We were guided down certain corridors to get there, based on where the winds were blowing. I am not sure about the wind speed.

We were offered the option also of using points, but we only have 200, and really plan them carefully. I hope they help you with the point issue. You had no real options. I am surprised by Thurs night that they told you there were no rooms in the lodge. We were put on an extension list Thurs AM, but when we came back to WL thurs evening, we were given not only the villa point and dollar option, but also different room options at WL. I hope you get that changed.

VMS - Thanks... I hope it works out too.

We did go back to the desk each day and were told no rooms were available. We asked to talk to an additional CM since the one we were dealing with was from Fort Wilderness (they moved some staff to WL) and not familiar with DVC. Someone finally emerged from the back room to tell us we had the only option of points or cash for a villa. Finally on Monday a room at the lodge opened. We moved to it and the cost was only 109.00 plus tax etc... I thought that was a great deal. I wish we could have had it for our entire extended stay. I would not be complaining at had that happened. My parents were also with us and are also DVC owners at VWL. They had the same experience but were lucky enough to get a flight out Monday afternoon.

I wish we had your luck of getting a room at Lodge!

I'll post my response from Member Services when I receive it.

mkkim,
I hope that you get good news from MS. Unfortunately I am not one of those members with lots of banked points. I think that one reason that many of us became DVC members is because of how much we enjoy our Disney vacations. I know that waiting between trips is difficult for me now, I can imagine how difficult it will be for those that were forced to use their points in a terrible situation. I hope that everything works out for you. Let us know how it turns out.

mkkim,
I was in almost the same situation as you.
We were due to check out of SSR on the Friday for our flight back to the UK. We had to check out of our 1 bedroom and into a studio to protect what little points we had left.

They did offer a reduction in the rack rate but even that price was out of the question($255 + tax per night) after 14 nights of a very expensive vacation.

We had an enforced stay of an extra 4 nights which cost us 62 valuable points (which we were relying on toward our 2005 vacation, not many left now!).

I have written to member services to look sympathetically at our situation but I'll have to wait and see, I guess.

While Disney and DVC have no control over the elements I cannot understand why we could not have been accomodated as an act of good will, especially as there must have been many vacant rooms due to cancellations.

If I had not had any points available I have to wonder if my family and I would have been thrown out onto the street in the face of a hurricane,If so, this seems to go against the whole ethos of what DVC is all about.
