We returned home from WDW and ASMo on Tuesday.... just wanted to share my thoughts on our stay.

This was our first time at any of the All Star Resorts. We generally stay on property, either at a moderate or DVC, though we've tried FW and some of the deluxe resorts for a couple of days here or there as well. We picked the All Stars this time just trying to save some money....and figuring that the kids might like it there.

We checked in at about 6:30 Saturday morning...the check in CM was great. Our room wasn't ready (obviously...it was a little early!) so we headed to the food court for some breakfast before going off to MGM. We had croissant sandwiches which were very tasty, and once again the CM's were very nice.

When we returned from the studios at noon our room was ready already (very impressed by housekeeping here). We had reserved a preferred room with an AP discount....it was the only type of room available when I made the reservations. Our room was in building 8, the Fantasia 2000 section, on the first floor facing the courtyard area. We were closer to the Love Bug buildings than to the pool, but I think this made our room quieter than it would have been.....the pool was quite noisy well into the night.

Our first impression upon entering the room was that is was very, very small. The tub even seemed smaller than standard size. We had a hard time not tripping over one another and had to be sure to put our shoes under the closet area so we weren't tripping over those the whole time. We had taken a cooler with snacks and cereal and packed a little heavier than we usually do because we knew we'd be sweating a lot and we wouldn't have laundry facilities in our room. Our stuff also really filled up the room. The beds were comfortable, the shower hot, and the room was very clean though.

The thing is, though I have no real serious complaints about the resort, it just didn't meet the same standard as other Disney resorts. The room was too small to really relax in and we generally stayed in the parks rather than go back even when we needed rest. Also, it just didn't have the feel of other Disney resorts. I really felt as if I was staying at some zanily decorated Motel 6. We weren't immersed in a different place and time.

I honestly think that if we need to save money on a room in the future we'll either camp at FW again (though not in July!) or stay off property. I'm rather disappointed that I didn't spend the $10-$15 more per night to stay at a moderate. And I definitely don't think the preferred location is worth the extra $10 or whatever....it was noisier and not really that much closer to things than the farthest out rooms.

I will give the resort some credit for 2 things.....its not a sprawled as some of the moderate resorts. Makes getting to your room easier. But then again, this is a result of the rooms being so much smaller and compacted into taller buildings. Also, there was a cute light fixture in our room that when lit just looked like a plain white box. When the light was turned off though...it looked like a popcorn box! Very cute....as is the whole place. I'm just not particularly into "cute" in general....and like a little more of an immersive experience. And if I can't have that I'd rather just have a nice relaxing hotel room where my family and I aren't tripping over one another.

Oh, and we didn't even attempt to use the busses. The bus stops constantly looked crowded, so we decided to save ourselves some time and aggravation and drive. The only place where this may have been a mistake is the MK....as you still have to be herded onto the monorail or ferry after you park. I think in a less crowded season the transportation situation is just better all around.

I know the All Stars are really liked by many, but they just didn't do it for us. Hopefully our input will be of some use to someone...even just so they know exactly what to expect. We pretty much knew what to expect, but didn't realize how that would impact our vacation....we just didn't seem to be able to relax. Of course if you're out of the room from dawn to after dark and don't have small kids who need down time, this could be a decent option.

Thanks Lesley!

I really appreciate your post as I am trying to decide if paying $30 more for our first night (arriving after midnight) is worth it for the experience to see if we would ever consider the AS for our future trips.

I can stay offsite for $35 or "experience" the AS sports for $60 before checking in to the BC.

I have a friend that went and she said the AS was just a room, but I have read so many positives about being onsite at all costs, I thought I throw the AS in the mix.

We are considering purchasing DVC or a Vacation Home and would like to experience as many categories as possible to help us make a good decision for our family.

Hi :)

Thanx for the report. How did your kids like the theming/pool?

My daughter is dying to stay at the "dalmation" hotel since she saw some photos ~ since there is only 2 of us the room size is not an issue ~ so we might try it sometime.

How were your other experiences with the food court? (other then the croissants)

Were there lots of flowers and landscaping just like moderates/deluxes?

Thanx

We have stayed at ASMo twice, and these have been our only onsite experiences. The first time, it was myself, dh, and my sister, as well as my then 1 yr. old dd. The room was small, but we were so thrilled to finally be staying onsite, that it had a lot of "magic" for us. The second time, same group, only add another sister into the mix, making for 4 adults and a now 2 yr. old dd. This time was a little cramped, but we still had so much fun!!!
We have stayed in the Toy Story buildings, and also Dalmations. My dh and I preferred Dalmations, as we were right outside the door of the main building, but dd likes Toy Story because we had a 3 story Buzz and Woody right outside!!! I think the theme of the resort is great for young kids, although adults may want more of a "relaxing vacation" atmosphere. There is some landscaping out by the pool, but just palm trees and shrubs, nothing elaborate or anything. The food court is good, although you do tend to get tired of it after a few days. We usually go in Sept. or Oct. when the parks close early, so we usually ate a light breakfast there, and sometimes dinner, but ate all lunches in the parks. Overall, we've had very positive experiences with this resort. Next year though, during our "huge family reunion" (see tag!) we are trying out the WL and I can't wait!!!
Glad you had a good vacation, and welcome back!
P.S. The theming of the Fantasia pool was a big hit with dd, although the water is somewhat cold. It's supposed to be heated, but sure didn't feel like it! (of course we go in the fall, so that may have something to do with it!)

LESLEY.
I agree with your report of ASmovies. We've stayed at the All star's several times and really enjoyed it . However there were only 2 of us in a room and we only go back to the room to shower and sleep.
CM's are great there and the food court is also very good for a quick bite. It is a very active resort....I mean there doesn't seem to be too much quiet time.
If you are commando people like me then all-star's is a great place.

Thank you so much - we will be staying here for 1st time in Dec.

I keep coming to this forum for AS/value info but mostly everybody posts about the moderates, deluxe or the DD hotels. :(

The post was most helpful! :earsgirl:

How did your kids like the theming/pool?

My kids didn't really show much excitement over the theming (on a side note....this place really isn't "themed" like the other resorts...its more "decorated"). The pool made them as excited as any other pool....but the kiddie area wasn't really large enough for the number of children at the resort. There's just a small shallow pool and a whale that spouts water. One whale...which means it was impossible for my children, who aren't particularly forthright, to get a chance to play on it. We didn't get a chance to really walk through the resort...which we would have liked to do...but we were too tired the whole time!

As for the landscaping...they do some things with the landscaping to fit the surroundings. Between the Fantasia buildings, for example, the plantings are tall brushy looking things (sorry, I'm not a plant person....) that sort of look like brooms. I've heard that there are spots in the Dalmatians landscaping. Its kind of like the other resorts, but not really. Also, there is very little shade at the resort...which is part of the reason we didn't explore more.

Personally, unless I really needed the on-site perks of early entry or bus service for a particular day (or if it were an enight we wanted to attend), I would definitely look for better deals off site. We stayed at the Wyndham Palace at DTD for $40 via Priceline one time....and it was far superior to the All Stars. But if you're a total commando (like I said, impossible for us with 2 kids and me pregnant) or your kids are begging to stay there....its not a terrible place. The service is good. Just be aware that the rooms are small and the resort tends to be crowded and noisy.

As for the food court, we didn't use it except for breakfast our first day. We had cereal and milk in our room...and snacks. The rest of our meals we had in the parks. Judging from our experience at other WDW resort food courts though...it really seemed very much like the food court at POR. And the CM's were much more pleasant than those I encountered at CBR in the past. We did walk through once at 9am or so....and it was mobbed. Very crowded. At 6:30 am though, it was empty. I'd probably try to avoid common eating times. If you have an early riser in your party it's probably a good idea to send them to the food court to pick up everyone's breakfast before 7 or 7:30. Or take a half gallon of milk in a cooler and some cereal like we did. $5+ for a croissant sandwich is a bit expensive...but that's WDW.
