First, I think it's ridiculous that I have to preface this post by saying that if you have had enough of resort bug threads and would like to make it known to all of Disdom, please control yourself, and refrain from doing it on my post. I have just returned from WDW on July 5th, and have some serious information for those who are interested.

We arrived at the CR tower on June 29th, and was very disheartened by the shabby housekeeping, but that'll be on another thread. We checked out on July 1st, and moved over to the AKL. We had stayed here twice before and love this resort.

After the first night, I took a shower when I got up in the morning, and noticed I had what looked like bug bites on my legs that itched like mad. There were maybe 20 of them, and a few especially bad ones on my foot that caused my foot to swell probably from all the scratching. I thought I must have been eaten alive from sitting out by the Mara late at night without feeling it.

The next morning, I had over 200 of these bites on my legs, arms, and on one hand. I've been home for 2 days, and the bites are starting to go away, with the help of benadryl I suspect, but the marks are still there, looking horrible, like I have a disease.

The second day at AKL when I saw so so many bite marks on me, I started to freak out, thinking they were bedbugs. I slept in the queen bed with my youngest son, and he didn't have a mark on him. I remember reading that there could be bedbugs in a bed, with multiple people sleeping in the bed, and sometimes only one person gets bit, don't ask me why. There were so many "bites" on me that I thought it had to be some kind of rash, that I couldn't possibly have been bitten so may times without feeling it. Whatever, I was in DTD on the 4th of July driving my family crazy, asking if they thought it could be bedbugs. I dreaded going back to AKL, I dreaded having to sleep in that bed, I was really torturing myself, as well as being tortured by the itching.

I went to the first aid station, and was told that the marks looked like insect bites, but not bedbug bites. They told ma how to control the itching, and to use anti-bug lotion, which I hadn't until then.

When we got back to our room, my oldest son checked the sheets, mattress, the blankets, the bedframe, everythinhg, and found no evidence of bedbugs. I was still freaking, because I read thet bedbugs live deep in the mattress, and don't come out until they sense a warm body, so we wouldn't be able to see them with a sheet check. I then remembered to look for the blood spots on the sheets, and there were none, not even one. You'd think with all the bites I had on me, if bedbugs were the culprits, I'd see even one spot, but there was nothing. I was able to sleep that night, but was glad to be going home the next day, which is really sad considering I love WDW so much and usually never want to leave.

When I got home, I went had the bites looked at, especially because my foot was still swollen. I was told they didn't fit the description of bedbugs. I'm relieved, but am still feeling the creepy feeling of the possibility that I had bugs crawling all over me while I slept.

The thing that shook me was the sheer number of bites. How could I have been bitten by mosquitoes or whatever non-bed bugs without feeling it?? But as I calm down and think back, I see how this probably happened.

Two nights in a row, I sat outside late at night at the tables right outside the Mara where all the bushes are. I was on the phone both times, for well over an hour each time, and I must have been distracted by my phone conversations because now I remember having to put my pool towel over me from the buzzing sounds I heard constantly in my ears. The hand that got all the bites was the uncovered hand that was holding the phone, and 90 percent of the leg bites were on the backs of my legs. I do remember swatting my legs several times.

My point is that this was a bummer of an experience for me, with the creepiness of the thought of bedbugs. I was so 100% convinced that my AKL bed was infested with bedbugs, but now I know it happened to me from being unprotected at night near a very bushy area.

It took a trip to my doctor to point this out to me, and it's a shame I couldn't thoroughly enjoy my time at AKL.

Next time I go to WDW, I'm going to douse myself with bug spray, and pray I don't get severly bitten like that again. This had never happened to me before.

BTW, AKL mousekeeping was excellent. For the Contemporary, I don't even have the desire to call it "mousekeeping", since they don't deserve the honor. And this is coming from someone who is one of the disney-can-do-no-wrong people.

I would have been freaking about the possibility of bedbugs, too. I'm glad for your sake that they don't seem to be bedbugs, but thanks for the heads up. We'll be at AKL in August and now I know to be be prepared for bug bite prevention & treatment!

Sounds like chiggers but they usually like to get you under the waistline, braline, undie line or sockline. I know that we've had a really bad mosquitoe season here in Houston with all the rain. There are many different species of mosquitoes and I get an allergic reaction to one of them. The itching is just horrible-as bad as chiggers. We wear bug repellant like perfume-but even so I got 3 bites under my sports bra last week that are just bugging me to death. You also want to wear bug repellant becasue of West Nile which creeps me out a whole lot more than bed bugs. Not sure how bad West Nile is in FL but it's bad here. No deaths from human cases yet this year-but lots of birds. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for the heads up Aisling. We leave for WDW on July 15th and are also staying at AKL. I am a smoker and since we always request non-smoking rooms for the comfort of the rest of my family, I always got down by the mara and sit outside to have a cigarette. I have noticed the past couple years I have also gotten a few bug bites , but never to the extent you have mentioned. I appreciate the post and am heading out to pick up a can of bug spray just to be safe.
Thanks again~

Thanks for your post, I think that you will have helped out a LOT of people, me included.. I swell from bug bites, and my throat itches beyond belief, so
I appreciate the info. I will come prepared! Sorry you went thru the discomfort, I would've suspected bedbugs too.....ewwwwww. I am going to check our room as best as I can.
Hope you're feeling better soon!

Pam

Bless you! I am glad you posted!

We are going to AKL in 27 days and I have been tormented by thoughts of bed bugs. I am so sorry your vacation ended on a bad note! But I am so relieved that NOTHING in your experience indicated bed bugs!

DH was bitten by what we now think was one of those yellow flies from the other thread. He still has a mark 8 months later!

I bought chewable Benedryl yesterday at Target and we are absolutely going to bring the bug repellant! Thanks!! :)

We were at AKL in June and I was bitten about 30 times while I was out on our balcony overlooking the savannah at night. I was out for less than 10 minutes and my legs were covered in bites. My husband had nothing. I am pretty sure the rooms were relatively bug free. As for the Contemporary, we thought that it was so dirty last year that we left and went to AKL. AKL and GF are our favorites and we have found them to be the cleanest. I will bring bugspray when we go back.

We have Noseeums where I live as well (Vancouver) but I think it must be a general term applied to a variety of different bugs, or maybe some just don't bite. I read the link you posted and noticed it said they bite. The description fits the Noseeums here, they live by water, are very small, they swarm around and you have to be careful not to breathe them in or swallow them. The ones here definately do not bite though. Good info to know that in some places they do, thanks!

Thank you for posting!

I just saw on one of the TV programs how you can definately see bed bugs if you look for them. It made me feel better right away that you couldn't find them when you looked. Glad to hear that wasn't the issue.

We'll be at AKL tomorrow and I am so excited! We plan on spending lots of time around the resort, so thanks to you I know to bring bug spray!

Thanks! :thumbsup2

Oh my goodness...how AWFUL!! Ack, I was thinking bedbugs too as I read your post! Good lord, an outbreak of bedbugs would disasterous for WDW. I'm sure that they take good care to keep those nasty things OUT of their buildings! I wouldn't have been able to sleep either...would bringing a plastic sheet for your bed keep them away from you? Or do those dratted things chomp through plastic too? Yuck...bedbugs are AWFUL!!!

We are definitely going to be bathing in bugspray while on our honeymoon!! Bring on the DEET people...drench yourself with it!!! We don't use bug spray all that often, so a good drenching during out honeymoon won't kill us and West Nile sure CAN kill us so it is the lesser of two evils!

I sure do hope you are feeling better!! Thanks for the post!!

Aisling, (is it pronounced ashleen?) Thanks for your report. I'm happy to hear you were impressed with AKL housekeeping. I'll be sure to bring some DEET if I'm going to be outside at AKL!
:wave2:

I can relate... we were at AKL for 3 nights in May and my husband and I both left with 30-50 bug bites. I did actually catch a tiny bug biting me on the ankle down by the pool, but most of the time I was unaware.

So, sorry to hear about what happened, but I can definitely see how it could. Here in FL we went from some very DRY months to now some pretty rainy/humid months and the mosquitos and biting bugs are getting out of control.

Although I'm not sure exactly what bit you I agree it was probably something that was outside and those bugs could have easily bit you during the day.

I live in South FL and was bit in my garage the other day about 10 times on my ankles and feet during the afternoon...although this isn't relative to where you were, my point is the bugs are bad right now. I also swell up easily from bug bites, if I get some hydrocortisone cream or benedryl spray on the bites right away I can stop them from progressing. (I always carry a small tube of hydrocortisone cream in my purse). I try to use repellent when I'm outside even just around my house (they caught me "off guard" the other day in the garage though)...

I did try the new Bull Frog Mosquito Coast Sunblock with insect repellent the other night (July 4th) and I have to say it did well...very well and it is "deet" free. I also recommend Avon's Bug Guard which we used last August in a very mosquito infested WDW (especially at the CR/WL area) and that worked well also. The nice thing about these items is they also have suncreens in them so they're great to wear all day at the parks (takes care of the sun & the bugs), just make sure to reapply as needed.

The summer is a real bad time for bugs in FL, as it gets cooler it gets better, usually the bugs aren't bad during the winter months unless the humidity level is high. It's not a bad idea to have some repellent packed for any WDW trip or any trip to FL...after all a lot of FL is built around swamp land and those little critters don't like us on their land, so we have to protect ourselves!

Walmart also carries wristbands that have insect repellant on them--you could get a set--one for hand and one for feet. I use these when we camp and they glow in the dark too!! They are kid safe and work fairly well. I say fairly because no matter how much spray, deet or repellant I use, bugs love me. I must have a ton of the hormone they love in me!

I also recommend Avon's Bug Guard
I bought this from a girl selling Avon right before we went on our trip, and I forgot all about it! It's still in the bag!

I want to get some of those glow-in-the-dark bands !

Aisling, (is it pronounced ashleen?)
In Ireland it's pronounced ashleeng, with the g almost silent. Over here, it's just plain old ash-ling.
