First, I think it's ridiculous that I have to preface this post by saying that if you have had enough of resort bug threads and would like to make it known to all of Disdom, please control yourself, and refrain from doing it on my post. I have just returned from WDW on July 5th, and have some serious information for those who are interested.
We arrived at the CR tower on June 29th, and was very disheartened by the shabby housekeeping, but that'll be on another thread. We checked out on July 1st, and moved over to the AKL. We had stayed here twice before and love this resort.
After the first night, I took a shower when I got up in the morning, and noticed I had what looked like bug bites on my legs that itched like mad. There were maybe 20 of them, and a few especially bad ones on my foot that caused my foot to swell probably from all the scratching. I thought I must have been eaten alive from sitting out by the Mara late at night without feeling it.
The next morning, I had over 200 of these bites on my legs, arms, and on one hand. I've been home for 2 days, and the bites are starting to go away, with the help of benadryl I suspect, but the marks are still there, looking horrible, like I have a disease.
The second day at AKL when I saw so so many bite marks on me, I started to freak out, thinking they were bedbugs. I slept in the queen bed with my youngest son, and he didn't have a mark on him. I remember reading that there could be bedbugs in a bed, with multiple people sleeping in the bed, and sometimes only one person gets bit, don't ask me why. There were so many "bites" on me that I thought it had to be some kind of rash, that I couldn't possibly have been bitten so may times without feeling it. Whatever, I was in DTD on the 4th of July driving my family crazy, asking if they thought it could be bedbugs. I dreaded going back to AKL, I dreaded having to sleep in that bed, I was really torturing myself, as well as being tortured by the itching.
I went to the first aid station, and was told that the marks looked like insect bites, but not bedbug bites. They told ma how to control the itching, and to use anti-bug lotion, which I hadn't until then.
When we got back to our room, my oldest son checked the sheets, mattress, the blankets, the bedframe, everythinhg, and found no evidence of bedbugs. I was still freaking, because I read thet bedbugs live deep in the mattress, and don't come out until they sense a warm body, so we wouldn't be able to see them with a sheet check. I then remembered to look for the blood spots on the sheets, and there were none, not even one. You'd think with all the bites I had on me, if bedbugs were the culprits, I'd see even one spot, but there was nothing. I was able to sleep that night, but was glad to be going home the next day, which is really sad considering I love WDW so much and usually never want to leave.
When I got home, I went had the bites looked at, especially because my foot was still swollen. I was told they didn't fit the description of bedbugs. I'm relieved, but am still feeling the creepy feeling of the possibility that I had bugs crawling all over me while I slept.
The thing that shook me was the sheer number of bites. How could I have been bitten by mosquitoes or whatever non-bed bugs without feeling it?? But as I calm down and think back, I see how this probably happened.
Two nights in a row, I sat outside late at night at the tables right outside the Mara where all the bushes are. I was on the phone both times, for well over an hour each time, and I must have been distracted by my phone conversations because now I remember having to put my pool towel over me from the buzzing sounds I heard constantly in my ears. The hand that got all the bites was the uncovered hand that was holding the phone, and 90 percent of the leg bites were on the backs of my legs. I do remember swatting my legs several times.
My point is that this was a bummer of an experience for me, with the creepiness of the thought of bedbugs. I was so 100% convinced that my AKL bed was infested with bedbugs, but now I know it happened to me from being unprotected at night near a very bushy area.
It took a trip to my doctor to point this out to me, and it's a shame I couldn't thoroughly enjoy my time at AKL.
Next time I go to WDW, I'm going to douse myself with bug spray, and pray I don't get severly bitten like that again. This had never happened to me before.
BTW, AKL mousekeeping was excellent. For the Contemporary, I don't even have the desire to call it "mousekeeping", since they don't deserve the honor. And this is coming from someone who is one of the disney-can-do-no-wrong people.
