Alright - tell me Im not gonna drop dead.

WHy am I so dizzy and feeling ICKY after a massage? Shouldnt I feel great?

Im nauseous too! :guilty:

i had a massage at teh GF in NOV it was my first one and felt awful the next day
they said it was body releasing all the toxicins

My sister in law is going to massage school and gave me a couple of massages last week, she told me too drink a bunch of water afterwards because the massage can release toxins in your muscles and make you feel icky if you don't flush them out....not sure if that's true, but it might be the reason why you feel ill.

Perfectly normal.

Your fluids are moving again... if they broke up any knots then all the toxins that have been trapped in there are releasing as well. Your body is basically detoxifying. Drink lots and lots and lots of water. You may still feel a bit off tomorrow as well.

ETA: You really will only feel that way after your first massage unless it's a very, very long time in between... please don't let that discourage you from going back

Sounds to like YOU ARE IN LOVE!

;)

The next day...what about pretty much right after it? I had it from 6-7pm. I feel like POOP!

And those of you who are familiar with my self-diagnosed, self-admitted hypochondria, know that dizziness can put me into a panic attack...

SO, post massage I had a panic attack along with dizziness and nausea. SO much for getting relaxed. :confused3

I need psychiatric help. Anyone got a straight jacket handy?

Did you drink any alcohol? Your body is probably shocked it is so relaxed. Try a chiropracter you will really feel weird. Just lay down & sleep.

Its perfectly normal, just make sure you drink LOTS of water!!

Did they use essential oils at all? I can't handle vanilla for example. It would make me feel the same way you do now.

Myst

I am a massage therapist, and yes, massage releases lactic acid that has built up in your muscles, which can make you feel icky, like you're coming down with a flu. It can also cause severe headaches. Massage increases blood flow, which is causing your dizzyness.

You should have been instructed by your therapist to drink extra water today, over and above what you normally drink. (A normal intake of water should be about half your body weight in ounces ie. a 100 pound person should drink about 50 oz of water per day)

If this was your first massage, the ickyness factor will be greater. This should lessen the more massage you receive. Please don't let this turn you off from massage. It's a GOOD thing you feel this way. Everythings loosening up and flowing. Just keep drinking water to help get the yuckies out of your body!

Thank you everyone so much!

I seriously was PANICING in the car on the way home!!!! I was ready to drive to the ER!

"Whats wrong Maam"
"I just had a massage, and I think Im dying now!"

:lmao:

Lots of water...lots of water... okay, got it.

Quite frankly, I dont know if I wanna do it again...it feels so ICKY. I'm scared to try it again...but man, I have to admit, im not as *tight*.... THAT part feels good.

Actually, you should continue to loosen up over the next couple of days. Please trust me and try again

The same thing happened to me the first time I had a massage. I felt the same EXACT way as you did! Out of sorts, and wierd! I have had similiar panic attacks, but like another poster mentioned don't let that discourage you from getting another one.:)

Im telling you - just plain ICKY!! They even had a "special" I could have signed up for and it was an awesome deal, and I was like "ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? I NEARLY ESCAPED DEATH!!! I DONT WANT ANY PACKAGE!"

I of course didnt say that - I said 'no thank you' and left....

All the while driving home imaging my kids having to explain how their mother died.... "She had a massage"

I love the DIS - for real...so much info. I kept reading online to 'be careful when sitting up because you may experience dizziness when you first get up' But not WAY after it, and on-going and yucky-poo-poo's!!!

YOu guys are the BESTEST! :grouphug:

I didn't know it was so common to feel dizzy after a massage. Hope you feel better soon!

You crack me up! :rotfl:

Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you. I've had massages on cruises and I always love em and never had any problems. :hippie:

Whew!! I'm glad I read this, if I ever got my nerve up to actually HAVE a massage, I would have no clue this could have been the after affects. I would have probably thought the same way!

What the hey is this? I thought it was supposed to be relaxing and now I feel like I'm going to croak.

About the only massage I have gotten have been the chair ones that they did at work 1 on the shoulders & then our hospital gives new moms a free massage while they are in the hospital -- I got 2 by virture of being moved in rooms. The poor massage therapist, kept saying I was tight -- umm...probably because I had a hard time completely relaxing my muscles. ROFL!!!! It's a control thing. ;) Or at least that is what DH would say...I like to have control over everything.

Actually, my greatest thing would be that I would feel "exposed" -- if they would let me get a massage in a 1-piece swimsuit, I would be a happy person but I've never seen that done.

Becky, you can get a massage in a swimsuit if that's how you are comfortable, but I can assure you that in a reputable place, with a competent therapist, you will not be exposed at all.

When I am giving a massage, my client is completely covered with a sheet. I only roll back the sheet over the area I am working on, then recover when I am done.

YOUR comfort is the most important, and you should be empowered by your therapist to assure that your comfort level is met.

I do hope you decide to try massage!
