baby wearing at WDW

Okay please don't think I'm crazy but....

My ds will be almost 3 when we go and is about 35 pounds. We plan on taking a stroller with us. But we're going during a very busy time ( 4th of July) and I know lines will be long and we can't take the stroller in most lines.

He's a child that likes to be held alot and Disney will be no exception.. esp. when he's tired.

Have you seen anyone wearing their almost 3 year old? And if so. what kind of carrier would you recommend for a child that big?

I wore my 3 year old. 30+ pound son on my back in my Ergo carrier so very comfortably it was amazing.... I'd take miles long walks with him there...dh and I even took him to the DC zoo in the Ergo without Any discomfort....

Granted he's almost 5 now, but I know I could STILL put him in it and carry him comfortably!

OK...a couple questions:

1. Am i the only one who has trouble getting their kid onto their back alone? Ds is 14 months, I managed somehow the other day but he was quickly losing patcience.

2. I feel like he leans back kind of far so I end up hunching forward, or keeping my fingers under the shoulder harness to pull him up slightly.

3. Do you use the hip position? I havent tried doing this again in a few months, but wondering if it works out well or not.

4. OK this one may just be my issue...does your ergo highlight all the places you need to lose weight??:confused3 particulary that tough tummy area :rolleyes1

I've worn both my girls through Disney and will be doing the same with ds in Oct. I also have Beco's. ;)

I practiced a lot. Now he is getting to the age where I can tell him to hold on and he does.

Have your tried tightening the straps? It might help you out with the leaning back. I found I felt he was leaning back, and tried to over compensate by leaning forward, in reality he was fine. I found if we seated deep I was good to go.

I used hip position last trip. It worked for most things. I did learn I should have practiced carrying him that way before getting there though.

Yes.

I made a pouch sling with some bargain fabric prior to our trip earlier this month. I followed directions posted on YouTube and it was the best $5 I spent for our trip! My 9 month old son loved snuggling up (hip carry) while waiting in lines and it made for easier transfers on and off the plane, bus, and train.

as for getting your lo on your back you can have them hold your neck. or you can have them sit down behind you. here is a link to give you an idea http://meitaicarrier.com/
look under back carry seated. Hope that helps you

My beco makes my tummy not look the best. I just try to pull out my shirt a little.

I am soo jealous that many of you can front carry a older baby (over 8mo old) for over 3hrs! :worship:

I couldn't imagine trying to carry that much weight for 10hrs each day over a full week in the heat. My back used to KILL me after a short 2hr trip to the mall, while using my front carrier (yes, the straps were tight).

On the other hand, I LOVED my framed backpack carrier. We spent over 2 weeks in Europe with one of those. She was 15mo old and spent most of her time in there, happily.

I think having the right carrier properly positioned is key. I wore my 9mo who is big for her age in a Babyhawk in 90+ degree heat at Disney for most of every day with no back problems at all. Granted I built up to that as at that point she had never even been in a stoller, she was always worn.
Making sure the babe is tied high above your waist so your shoulder dosn't get pulled down is key. I tried a frame backpack for my first and could only wear it for minutes. They just didn't work for me.

A one shouldered carrier is tougher for me as well when they get older. Just too much stress on one side if longer than a couple of hours.

I'm glad to see that babywearing is finally becoming more mainstream. It's about time!

Babies are meant to be worn. Not lying alone in strollers and buckets. JMPO

I front carried my ds for a long time comfortably. However, at 10 mos we got our first ssc and started back carries. They are so much more comfy when they get heavier and for long carries!!! A good ssc with a back carry cannot be beaten!

You are not crazy at all!!! On our trip in Jan. my ds was almost 3 (turned 3 in April) and I took our Beco. He did not want to be worn much, but I did pull out the Beco a few times. During fireworks I actually put my 4.5 year old in the Beco!!!!! I had ds in there but he was having a hard time seeing over my shoulder and dh had dd on his shoulders. So we switched!!! Anyways, the night of the PPP I put ds in the Beco for the last hour or so. Worked perfectly. We also used it in line a few times. Not nearly as much babywearing as I have done with him in the past but he is growing up!!!

no, not crazy!!! I'll be taking an extra carrier for my 3yo when we go, just in case! Daddy can wear her and I'll take on the 1yo :thumbsup2 We're taking a stroller, but I have feeling it's going to be used more for holding our stuff :rotfl2:

I thought for sure that you guys might think I'm completely nuts for wanting some type of a carrier for him. Thanks for the words of encouragement that it's completely okay to do so. :cloud9:

And thanks for the links on different carriers. Researching them as we speak. My only concern is... he's my last. :guilty: And I don't want to spend a huge amount of money on a carrier when I know I can't use it again.

Oh I am glad you are doing research to find the one for you. You can buy preloved and sell it after to make your money back.

I bought my Beco on FSOT on the babywearer for $100 about two years ago. I just sold it for $90 two days ago. That's pretty good resale value!

I know lots of people like their Beco's, but personally for a bigger kid, I would go with an Ergo. I felt like I had much more support for back carriers with it. But thats JMPO. Have fun shopping.

We've had a Baby Bjorn for years & worn many a baby at WDW on our fronts. This year we're going to Yellowstone with an 18 month old (then she'll be 20 months at WDW) so I wanted a backpack carrier. So I bought an Ergo. I've been using it now off & on for a few months (she's 14.5 months) and really love it. Probably 3 hours is the max I'll wear it as I then start to feel tired. But dh will be with me at both places & between him & I and breaks and the stroller I know it will be great.

I've never been to WDW with a baby without a carrier. Personally, I wouldn't like to try it. It really helps with freedom of movement, plus the baby loves it!

I just used my Ergo last weekend and carried DD who is 4 and about 32 lbs. We had some people do a double-take since she's tall for her age but I would much rather carry her on my back for a long distance rather than in my arms!

Even though we are going to take a stroller in Dec, I'll bring along the carrier also just in case.

Sometimes this site has the ergo for $79 but availablility is very limited! http://www.myfavoritebabycarrier.com/used.html

Good luck in your search! I hope you can find one for a good price. :)

If you are interested in an Ergo, there is a tip that I learned somewhere online. You can call the company and ask if they have any seconds or returns for sale. We bought ours last year at a nice discount by doing this.

We ended up with a Cranberry with Critter Lining one that according to them wasn't the right shade of cranberry. LOL So I got it for way cheaper. Others they had were ones that had some fading or had seams that had been restitched (but didn't affect safety), etc.

There were ones as low as $50 or just below then. The girl who we talked to was very helpful and explained each one that was available.

Good luck with the carrier search!

It's great that your little man still likes to be carried. My little guy doesn't (unless he's sick) and I miss that so much. It's also kinda good, because he's big (tall & 40lbs, 100th percentile on both).

Have fun with your baby & enjoy your trip. :yay:

I'll be going in September with a 3 mos old. I get really HOT easily, so I would like to find something to wear my baby in. I'm looking at a solarweave mei tai, or a solarveil ring sling. I have a sling that was made by one of my friends. IF anyone has used these, which do you like, and why?

If you can find one, look for a SolarVEIL mei tai. The solarweave has spf but isn't as breathable as solarveil. I have a SV MT that I use at Disney and it was very comfy and cool when I used it this month. I also had on a nursing tank and tshirt.

I also have a SV RS but I still haven't gotten the hang of it. Not sure if I ever will. :confused3

Have you checked out the FSOT board on Diaper Swappers or Thebabywearer? I bought all of mine used and they are like new.
