baby shower on a budget?

Enough already.. she's throwing the shower weather you think its "proper" or not. Go start your own thread this is Off Topic. Ooooooh start one on showers for 2nd babies or 3rd babies like I had :rolleyes:

Amen! If you ask me, it's REALLY bad manners to tell someone else they have bad manners. Emily Post and my VERY southern Maw-maw agree!

Pixiewings71, congrats on the new grandbaby and have a great time! As for games, you can always play the purse game. You call out a letter and the first person to find something in her purse that starts with that letter wins. It's fun to see what people come up with.

4 Mickey, I would try to contact a restaurant with a banquet room, I think that would be best in that setting. I'm having about 20 people as well but we just doing this at my home.

mama3 that rice game sounds like fun!!! I think we will do that one. :) Thank you! :)

Can we please just drop the whole etiquette and manners jabs? Seriously people, I respect all your opinions but I did not ask for etiquette tips, I asked for budget shower suggestions, let's stay on topic please.

Thank You for your suggestions Mrs Pete I do appreciate them, the manners jibe was just very uncalled for. I'm not getting a corsage, I got a cute little pin that says "Mom To Be" and I got the Dad a bball cap that says "proud Dad" I will have them wear those, instead of flowers. :) She probably won't sit so I'm not concerned about having a special chair for her, altho I'd like to think all of my furniture is comfortable. :) I will not be filling out the Thank You notes, she will be taking care of that. I have a small keepsake book and either myself or DD's BFF will take care of writing down the gifts and who is giving them so I think I'm good there. We aren't doing a drop in shower, we are doing a shower that starts at 2 in the afternoon and goes as long as everyone wants to stay. I'm not concerned about length as this is also a good time for her friends to say good-bye to her, it's hard to leave a place you've lived most of your life, she has a lot of good friends and this is the last time she will see a few of them. I'm actually considering getting her a camera as a gift, she currently doesn't have a digital and I'd like to get photos so I'm thinking about finding a good camera I can give her.

Helene, Thanks for your support. I appreciate your words. Altho the jabs towards my level of manners really doesn't bother me your support is very much appreciated. :)

Oh that game sounds FUN!!! Thank You for that!! And Thank YOU for your support as well. :)

We did the covered tray/guessing game, but after the bride-to-be (or mom-to-be) walked around with the tray, she stepped into the other room, out of sight, and we had to write down as many things as we could remember, that SHE had on! We had so much fun.

Another thing, not so much game related, more as an ice breaker. We took some small diapers/Pampers and passed them out with Sharpie markers. Everyone wrote something on the front of the diaper. Had some great ones for those millions of diaper changes! The kids that were there just drew pictures!

* "This end up"
* " Do I get a degree in poop?"
* "Don't worry Mom (or Dad) this too shall pass!"

You might want to check ebay for a gently used digital camera at a fraction of the cost and get her a prepaid gift card to somewhere she can print pictures at wether it be online or a store she can walk into ~ shutterfly.com, snapfish.com, walgreens, cvs, walmart. More bang for you buck & she'd be able to get prints too!

I attended a baby shower where the table decorations were books. Many of them were the Kohl's Kares books that are hard back books for $5 a piece. The other books were baby board books bought at Wal-Mart for $5-7 a piece. She bought a total of 10 books because she read somewhere that babies should be read 10 books a day in their first year. Then the host (who was the mom-to-be's mother) sprinkled baby type confetti down the center of the tables between the books. It was very festive and the mom-to-be had a great book collection. At my baby shower, guests were invited to bring a bag of diapers and each one was then entered into a drawing for a gift card to a restaurant. I didn't buy diapers until my baby was almost 7 months old! I also attended a shower where guests brought diapers and the prize was a dinner at the new grandma's house with the new parents and baby.

Well my BFF was having trouble deciding what to get so she and I are going shopping tomorrow to find a camera for DD. :) That way the cost is split and DD gets something she can definitely use. :) I like the snapfish.com idea though, that would be good since she will be so far away. Thank You!

Love the book idea!!! I think I'll see if I can find some little hardback books for this. Thank You so much!! I did find some confetti and picked those up along with other little table decorations but not the books. I also have a cute little poem for books that another poster sent me so I will have to figure that part out.

Thanks again everyone, your ideas have been great and I appreciate your input!

Here are some 'home made' gifts we made for my BFF's shower.

The Diaper Cake....my mom and I made these

The Centerpieces....The theme was Rub, a dub, dub and we had little babies in a bath tub with a washcloth, soap and duckie!

The Wishing Well....also made by us...a laundry basket for the base, a tote for the top, covered in baby wash cloths, socks to decorate the basket and ribbon with baby rattles for the decoration

Star that is so cute!!!! How was making the diaper cake? Was it "easy"? I'm not going to have a lot more time to work on this before the big day. :) I'm so busy for the rest of this week it's crazy!!!!

The diaper cake too us maybe an hour and a half to 2 hours. One of us rolled the diapers and kept them in place with ribbon. while the other one put the ribbon around the foam boards. The bottoms were made with styrofoam board (Michaels already had circles, we got 2 different sizes). We placed the diapers on then tied them together with small curling ribbon, then put the wide ribbon on. We too a wooden dowel through the center of both of the styrofoam to keep it 'fixed' together. Michaels sold the foam pieces that had stickies on the back. The top was curling ribbon (I think it was one for a gift, so we just stuck it to the top.

Good luck!

Thanks, I think I'll do this for her using a bottle for the center and building from that. :) As long as I have the time, otherwise I'll have to just give her diapers. LOL :)
