Baby Names that have been done to death

I like the name Hazel and I don't understand why people hate it so much. It was my grandmother's name and I've never met such a caring and fun person. If we ever have kids, I will lobby for Hazel as her middle name. (Who am I kidding? If I am the one pregnant, I have the last word!).

My cousin name his daughter Tegan.

It sounded made up when we first heard it, but it grew on us after a while. She in now nearly 10 and her name suits her so well. She is a gorgeous one-of-a-kind little girl. A little mischevious, not like the other little girls, and she has jet-black long wavy hair with these lovely big eyes that look down into your soul. She seems like an elderly woman at times and says the most truthful things and is always honest.

Every time the Shy-theed name gets posted, someone says it's an urban legend.
I'm not sure of the others but this one is real. When my DD first told me this, I thought that it couldn't be true but once she pulled out her year book, I could only shake my head and wonder what the parents were thinking.

Out of curiosity, did the Lemonjello/Oranjello (sp?) story originate out of Texas? In about 80% of the cases, it does, for whatever reason. A lot of folks don't believe that either, but I don't know. I have an male ancestor who was named "Orange" back in the mid-1800s.....and no one was even Dutch in the family. Why would someone do that? They'd probably never even seen an orange back then where he lived. Anyway, Oranjello is not a huge leap from Orange.
Coming from the source (an adult neighbor with over 30 years of teaching experience) I doubt that she would lie about them but of course you never know. This neighbor teaches in a south-western suburb of Chicago.

Oh, and around here, the trend (with the Stepford-wives-type moms, anyway) is use their maiden/family names for their kids - I know of one with last names for both the first and middle name, and the other one has a normal first name and a last name for his middle name.

Ouch :headache:! That would be me (although I am definately not a Stepford Wife, LOL!). I never changed my name when I got married. We used my last name as my DD's middle name and she has my DH's last name. I didn't want my own name to get lost and we didn't want to hyphenate our last names or add more than one middle name.

Some of them may have had the name/names chosen for years and never been fortunate enough to use them until they became overly popular.

I know we have a lovely name for a girl, but will likely never get the chance to use it.

I know a young boy who is named Crash. It's his middle name but as a baby they started to call him that instead and it stuck. I scratched my head over the name initially but it sure fits him now! =)

The one thing I dislike and it's just me, so no offense meant to anyone, is cutesy boy names that are hard to pull off as full grown men. For example, Cody Lindley, of Hannah Montana. Cody was cute as can be at 12, but when he's 30, Cody might come off as a tad immature.

People need to think ahead when naming their children knowing that they won't always be children.

Haven't read all the way through this thread yet, but wanted to respond to this by saying I agree in theory, but know a man named Cody who would completely change your POV! (Handsome, intelligent, and very manly! Ex-marine, in fact.) I think people just grow into their names.

I have been told a million time my name is spelled wrong. Which is interesting to me because my Mom told me she thought that spelling my name Haley was the only way it looked right. I guess according to others my name needs to be spelled with a million oddly placed i's a's and e's to be spelled right.

When you read a birth announcement for a new baby and its a name that has been done to death along with a middle name that's been done to death, do you automatically see the parents as dull? I do, and I don't like it...trying to find out how abnormal I am. What say you?

Yep. Very BORING! I prefer the odd spelling and unique names.

I wouldn't automatically see them as dull, but there are definitely names that I am very tired of hearing. Case in point: I hadn't spoken to an old friend of mine for years, but I was talking about him one day to a mutual friend and I said that if he had boys, I'm sure he would name them "Connor" or "Colin" because he's very much into being Irish. Fast forward a year or two and he gets in contact with me. He's had two boys. Their names? Connor and Colin. My head nearly exploded wanting to call our mutual friend to tell her "I was right!" I'm not saying they're awful names, but around here, you can't turn around without hearing those names.

On the other hand, I'm not a big fan of "creative" names either or names that sound cute on little kids but not on adults. I'm still scratching my head over Julia Roberts naming her daughter "Hazel", but if she's as cute as her mom, I suppose it won't matter.

Hazel, a 2-syllable girl's name of Old English/Teutonic origin, means: The hazel tree or nut; reddish-brown.
Hazel is also a name in the category of Color.

Tegan Jovanka is a fictional character played by Janet Fielding in the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who.

My dh's cousin has 4 kids - Kearsten, Jaden, Brealyn, Braydon... yikes... btw, the last one is a boy! Another cousin has a boy, a little younger than Braydon, named Bryson. Yet another has 3 kids, Layla, Billy, Colin. These cousins are all under 8 years old, I give up at family times, trying to keep up with the names! The older generation of grandchildren is a little more traditional, Neal, Bradley, Evan, Kennedy and Kerigan... That group is from 12 to 16 years old.

I didn't want trendy names - and my boys' names have been great choices, not really duplicated - we have seen one or two other kids named "Bradley" - actually one was a girl, named Bradlee Kay:confused3 and no other boys named "Evan" - although we have seen one girl named Evan.:confused3

Sorry what is wrong with Billy and Colin these are old names.

I wanted my Haley to have a simple way to spell her name. That is why I didn't want the extra y or any other way. I have since seen it a million different ways and I am still glad I just did Haley like your mother.

We named our dd Lorelei... so far most people mispronounce it. (phonetically it's like Laura Lie... long i sound at the end... most people say Laura Lee). The first question I usually get when people hear her name is "Oh so you were a Gilmore Girls fan huh?" Umm... no... DH is German and liked the idea of a traditional German name... hence the traditional spelling. We also thought it was a name you didn't hear very often... of course we have since learned of two other girls born around the same time who are named Lorelei... not sure how they spelled it though!

I'm an Andrew Stephen, (47yr old) and my children are William Thomas(17) and Elizabeth Katherine{11} and although both have family names they were also chosen as name you can grow up with. At 3 you can be little Billy ay 40 you can be Bill. although William has always preferred Will or William and there is Liz, Lizzie, Beth, Betty etc.

My father was a William who was called Ben and you will not be able to guess why.

I admit that I also hate trendy, hard to pronounce and spell names. However, I did give my DD- not an odd name- but one that is never heard. Athena.

When we were deciding on names, we wanted something unusual, but not something totally out there that people wouldn't recognize or know how to pronounce or even know who "athena" really is.

It still amazes me when people ask her name and they say , "Athena?, where in the world did you get that name?" HELLO??? Do you know nothing about history???

Oh well, we think it is beautiful and it fits her to a tee. Also, we have yet to meet another child (or adult) with her name! She was so psyched when the new Little Mermaid movie came out and found out Ariel's mother was Queen Athena. She has loved Ariel since birth and was just overjoyed hearing that. I am hoping it doesn't become popular like Ariel did!

I had a good friend in highscool named Amity and her sister's name was Athena.

My DS is Colin. We picked it because we liked it. Didn't know of a single other Colin (other than a few celebrities) when we named DS. He's 5 now and I think every soccer team we've played this season had a Colin on it! We tried to stay away from the popular names. I know Colin wasn't anywhere near the top 10 or 20 names when we picked it.

I have always like Claire for a girl, but a friend of mine has 3 girls and her youngest is Claire. So...I don't think I'm using that one. Then, I've always like the name Logan for a boy. Another good friend of mine, her SIL just a baby and named her baby boy Logan. People keep "stealing" my names! :goodvibes We are hoping in the next year or so to possibly start a family so this topic is very interesting!

I've keeping a list of names I liked and Ava, Sophie, Sadie, Abigail are some of my top girl choices and have been for the last few years, but now they are getting much more popular. I had them picked otu because them seem very Classic / Traditional, now I'm just not sure!

My DD was born in 2002. Her name is Katherine Camille. Her first name comes from my grandmother. Her middle name (which is what we call her) was a name that both my DH and I have always liked and said we'd name our DD that if we ever had one. And no, it wasn't after the hurricane, although she lives up to the name on occasion :lmao:

My DS was born in 2006. His name is Daniel Patrick. His first name comes from my DH's middle name which is Dan (but he liked Daniel better). His middle name came from the day he was born, St. Patrick's Day.

We never checked out any name books or searched the internet.

Neither of them have anyone in their class or close to their age who have the same name as they do. I've only met one other Camille and it happened to be her anesthesiologist when she had her tubes removed. I've met a few Daniel's, but they are teenagers or adults.

My DD has several friends whose name is Bailey, it was extremely popular at that time.

My DH's family has some odd names in it for the women. My MIL took two first names (Dana and Leah) and put them together for one of his sisters; yes, into one word :confused3. Another name is Merita...not sure where it came from.

My niece's name is Bree...and yes, my brother admitted to watching Desperate Housewives :rotfl: Her middle name is my SIL's maiden name.

Here in town there's a Harry Head who's a Realtor. His wife? Anita.

Not joking. They're with Century 21. Nice people.

When I was in school, we had a vice principal with the rather unfortunate name or Harold Balzac. To this day, I can't imagine why he went into education with a name like that!
