So when I first started dating my DH (then boyfriend) in 2002 I had a dream that we had a baby girl and we named her Emma. That name was never on my radar but after that, the name just felt special to me and I always felt if we had a baby girl that would be her name. Shortly after that dream the name Emma exploded. I was one of 8 Jennifer's in my kindergarten class then later at my first job there were 4 girls on my team...3 of whom were Jennifer's. I always hated that.

I figured I wouldn't have this dilemma cause I had two boys and I thought we were done having kids. Surprise, I'm getting my girl! So I've been calling her Emma already and I do think it's a beautiful name...but I can't help but have second thoughts every time I hear another mom calling to her Emma at the store, park, etc....

Lately I've kind of started to like the name Abbie. It's pretty and it doesn't seem to be very common. DH seems to like it. He's not in love with it, but he doesn't like Emma either...he just knows that after having two boys it's my turn :) He has however lobbied strong for Vivian, Lilian, and Josephine of which I say no, no and no.

Anyway, to sum up this lengthy thread what do you think Emma or Abbie?

Well, I like YOUR names better than what your hubby has picked out! Abbie reminds me of a dog's name though. I prefer Emma. (just my 2 cents)
Congrats!!!! :goodvibes

Honestly? Please don't hate me. But both are overplayed. There are multiple of both in my son's schools. And actually, I think there are more Abby/Abbie/Abbi's then Emma's if I recall correctly.

I love the names your DH has picked.

But, these days, I would steer clear of Emma, definitely, and Abby is really overdone, too, IMO.

What other names do you like? Have you tried nymbler.com to see what names go well with your son's names?

My dog's name is Abby! She's a very cute good girl though lol...Aside from that, I love the name Emma! Don't have second thoughts! :thumbsup2

My co-worker has a daughter named Lily - I like that better than Lilian. I also like Emma myself, but guess it is a bit overplayed.

I love the name Abbie. There are none around here that I know of so I don't think it is overused at all. If I had to pick one of his choices, I would go with Josephine. What about Penny? I LOVE that name.

When I had my daughter, 10 years ago this coming Wednesday, we chose to call her Grace. At the time it was not a popular name at all. Now it seems it is becoming the nom de jour. Up until this year at school she was the only one in the entire school. I'm sad to know there is another one now, even if she is only is Kindergarten :rotfl:

Where I live, Lily is super popular here (none are Lillian - all are just Lily). I am a librarian, and we had 4 Lily's in one storytime class of 15 kids. We nicknamed it the "Lily class". Emma and Abigail are still popular, too, but I see far more Lily's now. I never knew before I worked here how popular the name Lily became!

Well I have an Abby and it is very popular. Emma never took off here. That said.. I wouldn't change her name for anything.. its perfect for her. She was always Abby right from the day I pee'd on the stick. ;)

Thanks for the input. I haven't heard Abbie in my area so I thought it wasn't popular. The other names I like that DH has clear shot down are Isabelle (though that's popular too), Ava, Elise, and Amy which I love but DH just doesn't like. He likes Amelia...I did for like a day...but then I got tired of it real fast.

I have all A kids... Abby, Allison, Aidan and Anthony... if Anthony was a girl he would have been Aubry or Alexis.

Both Abbie and Emma are very popular here.

What about Julia? It's very feminine, but not overly popular. I still think it's beautiful, though. ;)

Good luck, no matter what you decide to name your baby girl. :cloud9:

I have all "A" names too! If I had any more children, their names would be:

* Aliza
* Amara
(well, of course if they were girls...) ;)

OK of all the names you mentioned, I'll note which ones I hear a ton of around here:

Emma - very popular
Abbie - very popular (and many similar names like Allie, Addie, etc.)
Ava - very popular
Isabelle - very popular
Elise - not as popular, you could call her Ellie :)
Amy - not popular with the younger ones, just people my age it seems (late 20s)
Amelia - pretty popular here as well
Lillian - not as popular but Lily is for sure
Josephine - Believe it or not, pretty popular here, I know 2, both go by Josie
Vivian - not popular here

Honestly, even though you don't want a popular name, it seems like you are really more attracted to those since the ones you like seem to be way up on the charts, so just go for it if that is what you like. :)

You can see which ones are most popular in the US and how they rank here ....

very pretty names! but ya know if I could go back and undo this trend I would.. its sooooo hard when your yelling at them.. :rotfl:most of the time I get the boys mixed up big time. I'd rename Allison to Elizabeth its her middle name. She loves it more than Allison and at times I do as well :) And Anthony well I think I'd name him James (his middle name) too late for that now

I had to laugh....our dog's name IS Abbie :rotfl:

But I still think it's a lovely name.

My personal opinion is that if the name Emma is special to you then use it.

I love Emma, and I have a feeling its popularity might be going down. I haven't heard of a newborn Emma in a long time. I like Abigail and Abby but I really don't care for Abbie - too cutesy for me, and it fails the Supreme Court Justice test.
