Hundreds of thousands of bottle of infant formula recalled

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Abbott health care company is recalling hundreds of thousands of bottles of infant formula because they might not have enough vitamin C.

The recall is for approximately 100,000 32-ounce plastic bottles of Similac Alimentum Advance liquid formula and approximately 200,000 bottles of Similac Advance with Iron, Abbott spokeswoman Tracey Noe said Friday.

The bottles, distributed by Abbott's Ross Products division, are missing a layer of material that keeps air out of the bottle, Noe said. When oxygen enters the bottle, it causes the vitamin C to break down over time, she said.

If infants drink formula without enough vitamin C for two to four weeks, they could start exhibiting symptoms of vitamin C deficiency, which include irritability with generalized tenderness, the company said in a release. So far, Abbott has received no medical complaints.

The Similac Alimentum Advance has stock code 57512, lot number 401895V and use-by 1 May 2007 printed on the back of the bottle; the Similac Advance with Iron has stock code 55961, lot numbers 40177RH or 40172RH and use-by 1 November 2007. Some of the bottles may have been included in Similac Advance Hospital Discharge Kits -- stock code 58986 and lot number 41699D5 are printed on the back of the bear tag attached to the kit.

Abbott, formerly known as Abbott Laboratories, is based in suburban Chicago.

Consumers with questions can contact Abbott's Ross Products division at 800-624-3412.

OT: :offtopic: I was in Walgreens today (my DS' are 24&20) so no babies at my house and have not been for a while...

I was in the Baby Aisle and noticed all the formula was LOCKED UP. What exactly is THAT all about? You had to contact a clerk to open the locked compartments.

:confused3

I found that rather odd!!!!

That is VERY odd - hot locked up @ out WG or any other place for that matter- - must have a ton of folks stealing it there- but it'd be kinda hard as big as those cans are- unless of course they're sticking them in the stoller...bet that's it.

Really, do you think it is THEFT, that has them locking them up. It appeared to me that it was the cans that contain the POWDER formulas. It was quite the display all set up.

I meant to ask when I was checking out but had forgotten to ask and then I saw this Thread and thought maybe all you new moms might know!!!

:confused3

My Criminology Prof told us that they have a lot of "street value." Supposedly, you can make quite a bit of money pilfering them from store shelves and then selling them out of a trunk of a car. Who knew? He was LAPD for a lot of years and had stories to tell.

I had always just kind of assumed that was the reason after he'd mentioned that. Desparate times call for desparate measures. Heavens knows they're expensive.

There is also a "formula ring" throughout the country. Not too sure how it works but, basically somehow the people that sell it get paid alot more than they pay for it themselves especially from the stores that get reimbursed from the WIC program. It was mainly in the non-chain inter-city small stores.
When I worked at Kmart we had 3 women who would come in all the time throughout different shifts to make their purchases. When they would spot someone that had already seen them buying it they would get pissed and just take off and try again later. They would even try to steal cases of it. They would try to be sneaky and hide it underneath clothes and place the bags immediately on top of the cases so the cashier would not see.

Wait... I'm not following this, I don't think. People go in and buy it, sell it to someone else and make a profit? Granted, I know you said that you weren't too sure how it worked.

Why would they leave? If they legitimately purchased the formula in the first place, can anyone stop them? Except that it might tip someone off...

This type of thing fascinates me for some reason!

If I buy a can of formula for 3.00 and sell it to the small store for 6.00 then they sell it for 9.00. The govt will reimburse them the 9 dollars purchased with the WIC checks. So, they get their purchase price plus some. So, then everyone makes out with some of the money. But, who gets cheated out of this. Us the tax payers. Did that make sense?
Alot of stores put a limit on the amount of formula sold because of these people. Otherwise they would buy the store out and not leave any for the people that would actually need the formula.
They would leave because they were caught trying to purchase more when they had already purchased the limit earlier that day. So, they hadn't purchased it yet. They just knew the policy the store had regarding the formula.
